Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can everyone pay attention to the mod warnings carried over from earlier threads and set out below. In particular please remain civil to each other

    First thread

    Thread II

    Thread III

    Thread IV

    Thread V

    Thread VI

    Thread VII

    Thread VIII

    Thread IX

    Thread X

    Thread XI

    Mod warnings:
    Beasty wrote: »
OK, time to step in with some mod instructions:

    1. Please interact in a civil manner
    2. Do not tell others what to do, or what to post
    3. If you have a problem with a post report it and leave the modding to the mods

    In terms of thread content:

    4. Treat everything you read here with caution. Anything posted is from an anonymous internet poster. You cannot assume anyone has any "specialist" knowledge whatever they claim
    5. Statistics are important to some (and I personally pay a lot of attention to them), but they are of very little use to anyone who is already caught up in this, or indeed knows of people who are caught up
    6. Terms such as "sinus", "airborne", "aerosol" have little relevance at this time in this jurisdiction. Ultimately though if cases are discovered in Ireland please pay attention to the relevant authorities and what they advise/recommend, and not some randomer(s) on the internet

All the above is me talking as a complete layman on the subject. Like everything in this thread do not treat it as chapter and verse, beyond paying attention to items 1-3 above

Any questions please PM me - do not try and dissect this post in-thread
    Beasty wrote: »
Last time it was a "suggestion"/request

    Now it's an instruction

Stop all the tit for tat stuff on the stats. None of us are in full possession of the facts and none of us can draw any "definitive" conclusions. Bottom line. It's serious. Not serious in Ireland at this stage, but may become so. Anyone caught up in this is not going to take much solace from any stats however they are complied

Any questions PM me - do not respond to this warning in-thread
    Beasty wrote: »
    OK

A number of posts have been sanctioned although it could have been many more

Could everyone please re-read the warnings in the OP

Could I also re-emphasise - attack the post, not the poster

I understand people can get very emotional about this sort of thing. Regardless of that there is no reason this cannot be discussed in a civil manner. Yes there are people implying there is little to worry about. Equally there are some doom and gloom merchants in the thread. Despite appearances I actually think most posters are probably somewhere in the middle recognising this is serious, but at this stage not overly so in Ireland

Whatever your own views are please recognise others are entitled to different views., Even if at different extremes please do not try and repeatedly ram your views down the throats of those who have differing views

In due course we may well have a far better understanding of this virus, but at present I do not think anyone can claim anything approaching a full understanding, and as always we need to take information posted by anonymous internet posters with a pinch of salt

    Any questions PM me
    Beasty wrote: »
I'm opening this one up with a very clear warning. Cut out all this cover-up/conspiracy stuff. If you have a reliable source quote it (not just their words but provide a link to a reliable source) - otherwise your claims carry little if any weight
    Beasty wrote: »
    A reminder to everyone

It is against site rules to seek or offer any medical advice. Please do not post here about your symptoms asking what to do. Contact your doctor by telephone and they can advise you as appropriate
    Beasty wrote: »
    A few reminders:

    1. Some posters have been less than civil in their posting - particularly in the last few hours. Continue interacting in an uncivil manner and your posting privileges will be removed

    2. Until something is reported "officially" treat anything you read here with suspicion. I am not saying posters are deliberately posting misleading or incorrect information, but this site, as well as other social media outlets cannot be considered "verifiable" news outlets. Of course if the likes of the HSE have a verified Twitter account we can assume what they post is accurate. Randomers on here or elsewhere cannot be considered "official" or "reliable" sources

    3. I have little doubt there is some kind of lag in reporting "official" updates to numbers as I equally have little doubt there will be procedures to follow before any case becomes formally "confirmed". Hence you may feel you have information that contradicts any "official" information. That's not necessarily the case - it may be that you have access to information before others. Regardless of that do not post it as an actual case here. We can only go by official updates and you can expect others to be sceptical about anything not coming from an official source. That does not make your information wrong, but it needs to be formally verified before you should be claiming anything is "fact"
    Beasty wrote: »
I will say this yet again, but from now on not only will your posts be deleted, but you may well get additional sanctions applied

It is against site rules to request or offer any medical advice. If you have symptoms phone your doctor, and do not try and get a diagnosis from some randomer on the internet. Do not ask what medication to take here

    Any questions, please PM me
    Beasty wrote: »
If people wish to flout the new restrictions announced on Friday that is up to them. They cannot complain at the consequences, be that direct action from the authorities, exposure in Social Media (not here) or being shunned by locals, friends, family etc. If they post about it here, or encourage others to flout the rules, trying to appear macho, or thinking they are above the rules or simply being a smart arse, posting privileges will be removed

Any questions, PM me. Do not respond to this post in-thread

All threadbans carry over, but we will reconsider if anyone wishes to discuss it further via PM

Please remember we have a Conspiracy Theories forum for speculation. Treat any information posted here as if it's from an anonymous internet poster. No-one is an expert here whatever they may claim. Please provide reliable sources where you can, and if you cannot please caveat your claims accordingly

Nobody has died in New Zealand yet.
    About 480 cases only.
Taiwan has 288 cases and two deaths.

Coveney and Harris said that there was evidence that travel bans didn't work by countries that implemented them. Of course they lied.

There was some bullsh1t articles recently about 'How Germany flattened the curve', no they didn't. They had bought up all available ventilators since January, now that they have increased numbers they too will be running out of equipment and death rate will increase.

Those numbers for here are starting to look substantial now. Obviously not compared to other nations thankfully but 46 deaths is affecting 46 families. At this stage you might not know somebody directly hit or affected but you might know somebody who knows somebody who has been and realistically that means it's coming closer to your door, so keep doing your part if you have been and cop on if you haven't been.

There’s a Wikipedia page I’ve looked at for a long time -‘Deaths in 20xx’ - which lists the notable deaths from a given year. On the ‘Deaths in 2020’, it’s been interesting to see the COVID-19 deaths appearing with increasing frequency and the ages. Not all elderly people. The earliest entry on COVID-19 that I noticed was way back in February.

According to Diabetes Ireland we are part of the at risk group and should be concooning. It’s waiting for confirmation if the Covid19 payment applies.

However according to this list from the HSE we’re not - https://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/respiratory/coronavirus/novelcoronavirus/guidance/vulnerablegroupsguidance/COVID-19%20Guidance%20for%20extremely%20medically%20vulnerable%20V1.pdf

    It’s all very confusing.

    Now diabetics not at risk

The US is gonna kill it with the testing at the very least. They're supposedly rolling out a 15 minute test created by Abbott, that's a really positive development. I hope it works well, it could be a game changer.
That Abbott assay only has 60% sensitivity apparently.

Diagnostic companies are always trying to be the first at providing testing, even if it means they are not the most accurate.

They're sales people. The same as pharmaceutical companies.

It's the same with that Randox assay from Donegal. Of course they're going to say their test is the fastest and most accurate.

Put them in the hands of the laboratories and you soon see which ones are the most reliable.

What happens to the professor if he's wrong? Does Angela write him a strongly worded open letter saying his advice was poor?

    Wrong about what?

The part I assume you object to is where he asks the Federal Government "to develop strategies that effectively protect risk groups without restricting public life across the board" - basically just a call for dynamic creativity in public policy, to hopefully prevent massive suffering in Germany and across the world where possible.

Did you read the whole letter? Most of it is simply seeking scientific rigour and clarification re: the technical aspects of the medical data, and for the statistics to be interpreted honestly.

For instance he asks for a random sample of the healthy general population to validate the real spread of the virus. This would be doable. (A poster on this thread suggested it.) There's no reason not to do it. (Is there?)

For distinctions to be made between the disease and the infection insofar as it affects sufferers.

For a scientific comparison of Covid-19 to other coronavirus infections, and context and perspective to be gained. (This is already being worked on by the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents.)

For distinctions to be made between deaths caused by the virus as opposed to deaths co-existent with the virus. As a poster said upthread 'We're not privy to that information'. There's no reason for medical data to be kept secret.

They have tested 33,000 in about 13 days so, allowing for a slow start, they must be at 5000 now.
The 33,000 number hasn't been attributed to anyone. I believe it refers to swabs as opposed to tests being processed in labs because if you read what was written in the Irish Times article that is the context in which it was presented.

Coronavirus: Ten more deaths confirmed in Republic (Irish Times, March 29)
The HSE disclosed that 15,500 people are waiting to be tested for Covid-19 since the Government changed the criteria for testing to people displaying two symptoms of the infection. There are 5,000 tests being carried out every day.

More than 33,000 people have been tested since March 16th.

The HSE has 46 testing centres in operation and a further six will come on stream next week. Up to 60,000 testing kits have been delivered and a further 100,000 will be delivered each week.

The mislabeling of the community sampling centres as testing centres has allowed such ambiguity to develop. It sounds theoretically possible for the country to process that many swabs daily, if the resources (labs, scientists and materials) are available but we don't have that capacity yet.

Everything You Need to Know About Coronavirus Testing (Wired, March 16)
The test itself only takes about a day to run if you have all the required reagents.

Challenges to source enough swabs as testing increases ‘will soon settle down’ (Irish Times, March 18)
The NRVL is operating on a seven-day basis, with two teams working 12-hour days. This has enabled coronavirus testing to be scaled up from 30 samples a day in early February to 900 a day.

“They have been fantastic,” said Dr de Gascun. “We have been trying to manage the burden on staff so they don’t get sick.”

The facility conducts up to 15,000 tests during a typical flu season, with an annual throughput of 360,000 samples a year. The widespread use of “high throughput automated analysers” allowed a lot of tests to be conducted at any one time.

Dr de Gascun said the coronavirus test was more cumbersome, requiring more manual input. However, high throughput technology for it was expected to become available in four to six weeks.
4-6 weeks -> last 2 weeks of April.

Here is how Cillian de Gascun explained the new process working:
Hospitals would concentrate on testing for those who were sickest and on their own staff, which would take 12 to 36 hours to fully process. The NVRL community testing with the ambulance service would take three to five days, and concentrate on otherwise well individuals.

The following day, Simon Harris proclaimed on national radio that 15,000 tests a day would be carried out in the next few days. It was a pie in the sky number.

Ireland will continue to 'test, test, test', as 15,000 Covid-19 tests set to be carried out daily (RTE, March 19)

The official story from the HSE last weekend was that there would be 4,000 results processed daily from last Monday. The Irish Times reported on Tuesday, that 1,500-2,000 test results come from the labs daily due to kit shortages.

Coronavirus test backlog: How did it emerge and can it be controlled? (Irish Times, March 24)

In the context of what de Gascun said on March 18, I find the idea of there being 5,000 test swabs processed in Ireland each day dubious. By March 17, there had been 6,636 tests. I haven't seen an actual number reported since then.

    https://twitter.com/rtenews/status/1239979449132646400

In contrast to the ambiguity that we have been presented with Finland distinguishes between the samples and the tests.

    Finland : Coronavirus COVID-19 – Latest Updates
Updated on 27 March at 18:00.

    COVID-19 cases diagnosed in Finland

By 9.30 on the 27 March, a total of 1,025 laboratory-confirmed cases of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) have been diagnosed in Finland.

    Corona sampling in Finland

By 27 March, nearly 18,000 samples meeting the sampling criteria have been tested in Finland. There may still be delays in the reporting and recording of samples in the National Infectious Diseases Register.
