Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Mod warnings:
    1. Please interact in a civil manner
    2. Do not tell others what to do, or what to post
    3. It is against site rules to seek or offer any medical advice. Please do not post here about your symptoms asking what to do. Contact your doctor by telephone and they can advise you as appropriate
    4. If you have a problem with a post report it and leave the modding to the mods

    In terms of thread content:
    • Treat everything you read here with caution. Anything posted is from an anonymous internet poster. You cannot assume anyone has any "specialist" knowledge whatever they claim
    • Statistics are important to some (and I personally pay a lot of attention to them), but they are of very little use to anyone who is already caught up in this, or indeed knows of people who are caught up
    • Whatever your own views are please recognise others are entitled to different views., Even if at different extremes please do not try and repeatedly ram your views down the throats of those who have differing views
    • Cut out any cover-up/conspiracy stuff. If you have a reliable source quote it (not just their words but provide a link to a reliable source) - otherwise your claims carry little if any weight. If you wish to discuss conspiracy theories we have a dedicated forum for that and it’s not this one
    • If the likes of the HSE have a verified Twitter account we can assume what they post is accurate. Randomers on here or elsewhere cannot be considered "official" or "reliable" sources
    • If people wish to flout the restriction rules that is up to them. They cannot complain at the consequences, be that direct action from the authorities, exposure in Social Media (not here) or being shunned by locals, friends, family etc. If they post about it here, or encourage others to flout the rules, trying to appear macho, or thinking they are above the rules or simply being a smart arse, posting privileges will be removed
    • If you don't want to see discussion about Trump perhaps stay clear of this thread between the hours of 22:00 and 01:00. This is a thread for "breaking news" so please do not expect posters to discuss things happening "now" in other threads. It's not discouraged but equally posters expect to discuss such issues in this thread (added 14/04/20)
    • There is absolutely no good reason top try and forecast or predict daily numbers, so do not do so
    And now a maths lesson:
“Average” is a non-defined term. “Mean” and “Median” are both mathematically defined terms.
Mean = the sum of a series of numbers divided by the number of items in the series
    Hence the Mean of 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 7, 8 = (1+2+3+3+4+7+8)/7 = 4
Median is the midpoint number. In the above example it’s the 4th number in the sequence of 7 numbers – in this case 3
Both numbers are examples of “averages”. Not every average is the “Mean”, not every average is the “Median”, but every “Mean” and every “Median” number is an average

All threadbans carry over, but we will reconsider if anyone wishes to discuss it further via PM

    The Flu strikes back.

I was just responding to your other post. Where you called someone a drama queen.

My missus is a healthcare worker and the fact we are back in level 5 has had a heavy effect after all the work they've done.

So you can shove it up your hole if you think they're doing SFA

You said it was basically the Flu. Donald I thought you usually used Twitter to spout your 'wisdom'.

4th October: "Our plan is to learn to live with the virus. No need for level 5"

Yep, the ‘living with the virus’ statement was just plain odd. There is only managing the behaviors of the virus and the citizens of the country.

You're wasting your breath with some of the 'experts' on here but I understand your frustration. I and many others are fully aware of what your wife has to deal with. Or at least have a good idea. My only regret with today's announcement is that there were any exceptions (eg. GAA, Construction) and that the schools are still open. I want lockdown to have the best chance to succeed to protect the elderly, vulnerable and hospital capacity. And of course our Healthcare workers. I posted before that if I was a Healthcare worker I would be livid at the attitude of an increasing percentage of our population and the lack of enforcement of flagrant breaches. Some of these people will no doubt be the first to complain if they are unfortunate enough to get ill and can't be seen promptly.

Give my best to your wife and to her colleagues. I and many others greatly respect what they do and what they have to endure both physically and mentally.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the logic of our government, or rather the madness unfolding. You limit funeral attendees to ten but allow hundreds of people mill around the school gates. Pubs, restaurants and hairdressers are gone to the wall yet thirty lads can jump all over each on the GAA pitch. Forgive me for thinking the "Level 5" restrictions are flawed to the point of being cracked. And inside these cracks Covid can still thrive, improvement if any in the coming weeks will be minimal to the point of redundancy. It's going to be a long winter under such clueless leadership.

Yeah. I’m not sure how prevalent they are to be quite honest, but I suspect a lot less than they seem in an online thread, and that’s based on recent opinion polling. Online bubbles can be very misleading.

This has been explained hundreds of times to you so I can only determine that you are either thick or ignoring the explanation because it's inconvenient.

The purpose of the restrictions is to limit social interaction. The government has deemed some interaction as more essential than others, for example children getting an education over getting a haircut.

The idea is to reduce the total number of interactions.

Great to hear 'strategy' in the speech. Not so great to hear "Some people want herd immunity, some people want zero covid. We are doing neither" Looks like we are going for the halfway house, try to please everybody and please nobody. Self inflicted death by a thousand cuts.

Zerocovid is a stupid name. I really don't know how this is going to work without effective quarantine. Sure airline figures are down but 10% of passengers and flights is still an awful lot of people who we are trusting to do the right thing. Given the numerous examples from public health where this hasn't been the case I wouldn't hold my breath. There'll be alot of people on the herd immunity side who won't consent to their liberty being curtailed. Equally there'll be those on the other side who see the folly of a 6 week Hail Mary followed by a few weeks and another lock down. Why should we severely restrict life so that it can just blow back up again.

What'll happen with the annual pilgrimage to remember why you left this country. (Christmas returnees) That'll still go ahead and will torpedo any affect of this lockdown. Therefore the only logical conclusion is it won't work. I hold nothing against those who do this or intend to do this. Merely pointing out the inconsistency.

MM laughing and joking saying we really need a vaccine next year was galling. There is really no guarantee that it'll be effective enough to have an impact. Obviously live in hope but the leader of a country does not place all his eggs in one basket.

The only countries that have done well in this are those that have implemented effect quarantine. This goes for every infectious disease that overwhelms a country ever. Trying to do mental gymnastics around this point is proving to be hugely costly. While level 5 looks like it's needed, what then?
The concept of quarantine has been known since biblical times and is known to have been practised through history in various places. Notable quarantines in modern history include that of the village of Eyam in 1665 during the bubonic plague outbreak in England; East Samoa during the 1918 flu pandemic; the Diphtheria outbreak during the 1925 serum run to Nome, the 1972 Yugoslav smallpox outbreak, and extensive quarantines applied throughout the world during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Do you work in Construction? If you did you'd know they are so paranoid of closing sites that they have dedicated covid compliance officers on every crew. I have had to do risk assessments for every menial task for my site staff. Theres very low chance for transmission on sites. They have even staggered breaks!

Is there an issue though with workers arriving to sites, travelling 3 or 4 in a car/van ? I’m just wondering if it’s a bit like the GAA, where the matches are generally safe, it’s the milling round before and after is the issue ?

Didn't sleep well last night after the latest news. I've done everything possible to sanatize, social distancing and am living alone.
My Parents are elderly, siblings away and my best friend has MS.

    Sons living in another household.

My long term girlfriend had a breakdown and she couldn't cope with the whole covid thing, she has generalised anxiety disorder and she was doing well, but all the contradictions have really ****ed with her ability to make sense of all this bull**** of, you can, you can't, maybe, no but you should.. You can if it's work, can't if it's a gathering, it's shocking how all these contradictions effects people with metal disorders.
Anyhow she dumped me, she couldn't cope with this covid mess of contradictive rules.

I'm not annoyed it's over because we were drifting anyhow.

I'm annoyed with how the powers that be have worded all the restrictions, it's really ****ing with people's heads.

I can understand its very simple, social distance, sanatize and don't gather in big groups of people.

That's it... For men and women of a nervous disposition it's not that ****ing easy...

Anyhow I'm being kept in my job because I'm in the forestry/agricultural/horticural area in the public sector.

In a lonely parkland more than 5k from the nearest town or village.. Nearest house is around 4k away

It's going to be myself the odd deer, fox and leaves blowing around, its going to be a long 6 weeks, because the seasonal contract workers finished up 2 weeks ago...

Living on my own..I feel like laughing or crying...

We're all in this together, work together stay apart...

It’s not debatable that physiotherapy is an essential service. People who don’t know what they are taking about might think it’s not an essential service.

He was going on about 0 Covid again and suggesting the whole of Europe does it. Then he contradicted NPHET modelling by saying we would still have 300-400 cases a day by early December. He also suggested that MM said last night it will be level 3 after that until there is a vaccine. Another lockdown in February. I presume it is because he wants his 0 Covid tripe.
It should be debated with other public health experts, not just a 1 sided radio interview.

It would be essential to some, but not all, my own physio is just an average joe, dealing with average joe injuries, nothing too serious I'd imagine, I'd imagine most serious injuries would be dealt with via the HSE, and I'd like to think those physio services are still operational, as they would certainly be critical

Completely agree here, this is such a highly dynamic situation, such plans cannot be made, the government is doing the best it can, but mistakes will be made
