Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Mod warnings – I have condensed these given the size the OP has become, and some of the earlier warnings are now out of date
    1. Please interact in a civil manner
    2. Do not tell others what to do, or what to post
    3. It is against site rules to seek or offer any medical advice. Please do not post here about your symptoms asking what to do. Contact your doctor by telephone and they can advise you as appropriate
    4. If you have a problem with a post report it and leave the modding to the mods
    In terms of thread content:
    • Treat everything you read here with caution. Anything posted is from an anonymous internet poster. You cannot assume anyone has any "specialist" knowledge whatever they claim
    • Statistics are important to some (and I personally pay a lot of attention to them), but they are of very little use to anyone who is already caught up in this, or indeed knows of people who are caught up
    • Whatever your own views are please recognise others are entitled to different views., Even if at different extremes please do not try and repeatedly ram your views down the throats of those who have differing views
    • Cut out any cover-up/conspiracy stuff. If you have a reliable source quote it (not just their words but provide a link to a reliable source) - otherwise your claims carry little if any weight. If you wish to discuss conspiracy theories we have a dedicated forum for that and it’s not this one
    • If the likes of the HSE have a verified Twitter account we can assume what they post is accurate. Randomers on here or elsewhere cannot be considered "official" or "reliable" sources
    • If people wish to flout the restriction rules that is up to them. They cannot complain at the consequences, be that direct action from the authorities, exposure in Social Media (not here) or being shunned by locals, friends, family etc. If they post about it here, or encourage others to flout the rules, trying to appear macho, or thinking they are above the rules or simply being a smart arse, posting privileges will be removed
    • If you don't want to see discussion about Trump perhaps stay clear of this thread between the hours of 22:00 and 01:00. This is a thread for "breaking news" so please do not expect posters to discuss things happening "now" in other threads. It's not discouraged but equally posters expect to discuss such issues in this thread (added 14/04/20)
    And now a maths lesson:
    “Average” is a non-defined term. “Mean” and “Median” are both mathematically defined terms.
    Mean = the sum of a series of numbers divided by the number of items in the series
    Hence the Mean of 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 7, 8 = (1+2+3+3+4+7+8)/7 = 4
    Median is the midpoint number. In the above example it’s the 4th number in the sequence of 7 numbers – in this case 3
    Both numbers are examples of “averages”. Not every average is the “Mean”, not every average is the “Median”, but every “Mean” and every “Median” number is an average

    I’ve had symptoms the last week or so, today has been absolutely horrendous. It has been one of the worst days I can remember, throughout the day i would get this horrible sensation that someone pushing down on my chest. Struggling to breathe and coughing until I got sick

    Have my test tomorrow morning in tallaght, i hope I am not waiting two weeks like others for results. Though I already know that I have it.

    Right now the migraine is bad. I cannot sleep, when I lie down i feel like I will choke.

    You know what the advice is. Testing is one thing but if you feel you are really in a bad way ring the emergency services immediately. Let them decide.

    They say you should lay on your front for comfort and safety. the long waits for test results should be largely dealt with at this stage. hopefully

    The result isn't a cure. You will still have what ever illness you have right now.
    I hope you do feel better and don't be afraid to call for an ambulance if you need one.

    Have a big shop delivery tomorrow, really mixed messaging on should you disinfect or not and what’s the best way to do it. Best to be overkill than complacent I guess.

    An Oxford University professor (Sarah Gilbert) thinks a vaccine could be ready as soon as September.

    You would really hope so.....lots of gloomy speculation across the board today that restrictions and social distancing could easily go on for another year at least worldwide (causing havoc for economies, travel, tourism and sport).

    Guys is there any data on how many people are getting referred for tests/day, i know there is a backlog, but if the number of referrals for tests would be a reasonable metric indicator to use since we all know confirmed cases dont mean anything at the moment.

    Certainly look for assistance but do not go to A&E. They are not equipped to deal with Covid patients. Ring you doctor or east doc or whatever and get referred in. You cant fcuk around waiting for your breathing to go shallow before acting. It can change in a very short period from worrying to critical

    I think the backlog is gone (with the exception of the rest of the German results due) so anyone ringing for a test, should be tested pretty quick and their result back quick also.
    The numbers looking for a test mean even less, only ~15% tested prove positive where a confirmed case.... is a confirmed case. It be a better metric to use.

    I put out boxes for the Tescos guy.

    Non fridge stuff I put in a spare room for a few days. The other stuff I washed down the packaging with hot soapy water. Washed hands afterwards.
    Hard to know what to do with Bread and the likes.
    Lot's of folk have handled these things and it's better to be safe than sorry.

    I do think medicine and science offers us the way out of this nightmare. Social distancing will never solve it (unless Covid mysteriously starts to retreat of its own accord)

    Interesting to see what happens with antibody testing though : it seems the US and Germany intend going the mass testing route (UK too).

    theballz if you are still reading this thread stop. Dial your out of hours doctor. If you cannot get through Diall 999 OR 112 and let them decide what what you need to do. In some case rapid decline happens. Ring now while you can talk. Ring even if you cant and follow the instructions.

    Today they said they are doing about 4,000 per day. There does not seem to be a backlog given that some test centers were saying they did not have enough to do.

    I agree they both do but rushed medicine is bad medicine. No one has a clue what the longer term effects could be. I'd prefer to see a successful treatment using an existing drug that significantly reduces the fatalities than a vaccine.

    The antibody test will be interesting but i dont think we'll get anywhere near enough numbers to open up society again. Even partially

    I didn't see the briefing but why is George Lee and other journalists in trouble for asking the correct numbers waiting on tests and results, as weeks are going on the delays are longer and increasing, is our system fceked

    Tom. Think. Anyone getting their shopping delivered is (if they follow the advice) in a high risk category. For Example a 70 year old with a heart condition has about 35 times more chance of dying from this than a healthy 25 year old. That's 35 times not 35% - 35 times.
    That's why the Govt is so high on cocooning.


    Also when you are stuck in 24/7 what else have you got to do?.
    It might help to clean off your shopping. Can't hurt.

    The make up of the numbers were explained in the briefing but some there misheard or just didn't pick it up right and repeatedly asked questions over the differing numbers, I.e,. With and without the Germany processed positive cases. I don't think there was any need for the ridicule directed at them but journalists should be paying attention.

    Actually what happened was that the numbers did not appear to add up.(won't go into the details cos it is all covered in the previous thread)


    Problem was that Tony Holohan tried to explain it in about 50 sentences when only one would have done.
    The Journos then lost track of what he was saying so he hit them with another monologue and confused them even more.
    Thing is, If you watch CNN, or the BBC or (I guess any other news broadcaster elsewhere in the world) the only place you will find people obsessed with confirmed cases and testing is Ireland.
    This is because the panel themselves have focused attention on these issues by every day issuing these statistics and that's what the Journos focus on.
