See wasn't that easy, all you had to do was ask. Athlone. ;-)

Your whole argument revolved around the idea that no one on SW was genuine, now your saying that there are genuine people getting SW?

How do you know who is genuine or not?

Sure you know a fella that knows a fella but that doesn't represent the vast majority.

And even that one fella you do know, how do you know he does have a genuine problem in getting work? Maybe he can't read or has a hidden disability like dyslexia or maybe he doesn't. If you are so confident in your assertions then report him/them to the DSP or guards if you have evidence of fraud.

But stop making generalisations that you can't stand over.

The bleeding hearts always have a string of excuses for the lazy useless scroungers.

May we please get back to the real subject of the thread?

People on SW are often not able for many luxuries. It is a life needing discipline especially if you have lost a job etc. and are used to an easier life

Christmas in midwinter is already stressed because of winter weather. Keeping warm as a family, as an old person, is challenging enough.

Shops full of beauty and light! Loved ones you would love to give to! Special foods to enjoy.... yes, if you like a celebratory drink, fine too.

A break from being always watchful of pennies. A few treats...

    Begrudgery begone!

If you are on SW you shouldn’t be getting luxuries. You should be getting basics. If you want luxuries get a job that affords you luxuries.

Curious, what do you consider a luxury?

    - Internet?
    - smartphone?
    - TV?
    - Are they allowed buy anymore then cheese, egg, bread and butter?
    - In your world are they allowed a holiday?

    Whats luxury and whats not?

Over. I think it is 35-37 currently.
Not to mention the part you missed

And what is your earning status, since you're clearly bringing this so far off topic and making it a wages issue?

Being a windbag, you clearly barely creep over the 30% average (I suspect you even said that to exaggerate), or you would not have said it. You need to be paying at least 30,000 - 35,000 a year tax per year as an individual or 60,000 - 70,000 as a couple per year during your entire working life to say you are paying for anyone else. I am sure you will now say you do this. I won't be convinced. Others can make up their own minds.

My earnings or tax paying are none of your business, but then I don't whine on the internet about how much I contribute to other people's lifestyles.

The hatred in some people in relation to the social welfare is unreal,

I've worked all but about 2 months of my adult life, I was unemployed for a 2 month period during the recession.
However my wife also worked pretty much all her adult life but was unemployed for longer then me when she was made redundant more then once during the recession and she had trouble getting a decent job, we worked hard to get by and the likes of the Christmas bonus made a bloody big difference and allowed us to just about scrap by what is a very expensive time of year.

I wouldn't begrudge people the Christmas bonus, it can be the difference between some people getting Santa presents for kids or just paying off some higher bills.
Yes, there are people that work the system but they are not in a majority and if you have an issue with them then come up with a workable scheme to focus on them.

But to begrudge the Christmas bonus as a whole makes you a sorry excuse for a human being.

The “Christmas is an expensive time of year” nonsense keeps getting trotted out. Have I missed the price of food rising in the last 2 weeks of December every year??

Christmas is as expensive as YOU make it.

They could prob buy some meat too.
Anyone on SW should not be going on “holidays”

People on welfare get a set amount each week. What they spend it on, is frankly neither yours or anyone else's business tbh.

So you'd begrudge an unemployed person access to news, government services, job search, banking etc via a smart phone or the internet at all? Utterly clueless to suggest access to such services is now a luxury. It's like saying buying the newspaper was a luxury back before the internet.

Since you also begrudge them a TV you clearly don't want them to know whats going on in the world,

My wife was on social back in 2009, we went on holidays for 10 days camping. Did it on a shoestring budget...nice to know you'd also begrudge somebody doing that too

Pretty pathetic that you hate your fellow human beings so much.

Yes because if you don’t have the internet you can’t visit a library, buy a newspaper or listen to the news on the radio.

    The humanity of it all.

Yes because if you don’t have the internet you can’t visit a library, but a newspaper or listen to the news on the radio.

    The humanity of it all.

Plenty of town's and villages throughout the country with no library's, in case you missed it lots of them closed over the years.

As such there's plenty of places that people live which they'd have to travel in excess of 10miles+ to access a library and because they are more rural they often don't have decent public transport options

As for the suggestion to buy a newspaper...well this is likely to work out more expensive each month then a PAYG top-up. In addition if they have to pay for a bus or taxi (cause they have no car or public transport) to just get to a library then suddenly the cost of going to a library far outweighs the cost of any smartphone over a few months and a PAYG plan.

Simply put, a smart phone is extremely cost effective (smart phone for as little as 30e + 20e month unlimited plan on PAYG on Three for example) and has massive benefits to a person on social. Far more cost effective then your uneducated suggestion.

I can't help but feel you are utterly clueless regarding costs of services and access to services,

In the absence of knowledge you should assume nothing. I pay the high rate of tax and lose roughly 23 per cent of my gross income to tax. However I'm quite happy to know there is a system there to protect my family and I should we .
Utter crap. I pay twice as much a week than my husband gets in carers allowance

So are you suggesting the government should forcibly remove smartphones from every SW recipient and buy them one of these radios instead?

What if they bought the smartphone before they became unemployed? Similarly, what if they paid for their holidays with savings accumulated during these years or out of a redundancy payment? You can be unemployed, in receipt of a social welfare payment and still have some luxuries in your life. It seems that there are a few people in this thread that would have that as soon as you sign up for social welfare that you should give up all of your possessions. It's the workhouse mentality.

That, obviously, would be fine. But people on long term SW shouldn’t be able to afford a smartphone or a holiday. The payment should be just enough to get them the basics.

I wonder how Weldon would use the radio to submit his CV to a company?

My local library has PCs. The poster I was replying to said that smartphones were needed to keep up to day with news and what was going on with the world.

If your having trouble understanding words and sentences and their replies you can pm me and I’ll help if I can.
