Ok. So staff volunteer and premises are donated by the public. No stock costs. No heating, lighting, security. Everything is free. No resources wasted here.

    Eh??

    They are 100% free.
    You are wrong.

I use my local library regularly and have done for years. It’s never cost me a single cent.

Maybe they just like me, eh??

No, the taxpayer subsidised your library use. It is not free.

Public libraries are open to everyone and most of their services are free. You can use some of the services in the library without becoming a member.

In most libraries, you can read books, consult reference material, use the internet and study areas, and print and photocopy documents without being a member. However, you will need to join the library if you want to borrow books or other items, access online magazine and newspaper subscriptions or take online courses.

Can you explain how a large staffed, heated, stocked, lighted building operates without any costs. You could be on to something here if you can figure that one out.

Nah, couldn't be arsed. Have to go to bed as I have to get up for work tomorrow to subside those who don't.

PS, we are understaffed, not large staffed.

So running a library is costless? Genius!

Enough of the martyrdom - you have to get up for work tomorrow to subsidise yourself and/or your family. If every unemployed person suddenly found work, you'd still have to get up in the morning (unless they took your job).

People were talking about gettings access to a service not providing it. Seems to have gone over your head.

No one said that running anything is costless. Using a library is free.

They are charges for printing, obviously charges if you return the books late. I was in cork city libabry and they only give u the first 10 minutes free on the internet after that you have to pay 1 euro for an hour but that really seems like the minority, because all the county libabries don’t charge for internet. I asked th man why they charge for internet and he said cause it was the city and not the county.

So it’s free depending on what services you use.

Nothing went over my head but thanks for your concern.

    A recap.

The point I am making (and I can't believe it is even up for discussion) is that a library providing services for a social welfare client that could otherwise be provided by their mobile phone (which it is contended should be counted as a luxury and social welfare clients should not be allowed to buy one from their allowance), supplemented by the purchase of a Robert's radio, does not offer good value to the taxpayer or appropriate service to the social welfare recipient.

In other news 2 welfare families within my vicinity had takeaways delivered this evening. So much for being on the breadline.

Just because you have never been on the dole before doesn’t mean you won’t be in the future.

Fines are even being phased out now. Most don't charge anymore. Waterford city don't charge for using the internet but you pay for printing.
All libraries also have the daily and local newspapers too.

They offer a service called Work Matters, helping people looking to get back to work or starting a business. Have a look on any of their websites for more info.

That’s what I’ve said, the county libabries I go to are all free internet just cork City is the only libabry I’ve come across that charges for internet. I don’t just go to one libabry, I visit a few around cork.

So you want to shut all the libraries?? Ridiculous.

Only in the same sense that getting social housing is free. Someone has to pay.

You pay a rent or mortgage with social housing, not so with library books.

No they have very important purposes. Not amongst them is being a substitute for a mobile phone and a cheap transistor radio.

Strange conclusion to draw from my post.
