I agree with that, especially regarding the retrofits to the Hyundai they are horrendous. They are treating a car which is has to travel at speed like a Lego block.

Is that a Hyundai design issue - as in they are a particularly hard car to get the equipment fitted to.

Or is it an issue with whoever fits the stuff in Ireland.

I take it the whole Hyundai thing is decision makers just thinking "once it's got 4 wheels and an engine it's fine".

I know cars aren't the most important thing in the world but these Hyundais indicate to me as an outsider a culture of decision makers not fully supporting the frontline staff.

All frontline vehicles for AGS are standard family cars kitted out post sale. The right way to do it would be to receive them with factory fitted equipment. Some manufacturers offer this, most don't.

It strikes me as something a Nun would drive around in, dare i say it but i would not like to be in one in a collision.

My sister was moving from a Hyundai ix35 to a Kona and didn't like the drive so got a Tucson instead.

But yeh I am sure they are going to be fine for policing work and high speed action.

The 1.6 Kona is actually quite nippy. According to answers to my post about space for the kit it'll only need to accommodate someone's hat, half of a first aid kit and a half empty bag of donuts.

Nope only on the odd occasion, majority are resold and cash goes to the exchequer...obviously are court proceedings and the car is surrendered to the state.

Considering they are essentially support vehicles there would be no need to try them out before taking them in. They're not response vehicles.

Here is the current tender awards. I've also attached the vehicle evaluation form, which is used by garda driving instructors.

That is one part of a weighted evaluation system, which is as follows:

Quality of the Service Proposal (200 marks available)

Tenderers must address each of the requirements mentioned in Section B of the award criteria and submit a detailed description of their proposed solutions including step-by-step details of the processes and procedures used, which demonstrates how the Goods/Service will be provided. A mere affirmative statement by the Tenderer that it can/will do so, or standard information leaflets or a reiteration of the Tender requirements is not sufficient in this regard.

Whole-Life Cost (800 marks available)

Methodology for calculating score for cost:

The lowest cost for each sub-criterion will receive the maximum score for that criterion. The costs submitted by other tenderers will receive a percentage score inversely proportional to the lowest price tender as follows:

Score = (Lowest Cost Tender ÷ Cost of Tender being evaluated) x Maximum Score Available

Example:
Tender A (€30,000) has lowest whole life cost for a standard vehicle. It gets the maximum score of 400. ((30,000 ÷ 30,000) x 400)
Tender B (€35,000) is marked: (30,000 ÷ 35,000) x 400 = 343
Tender C (€40,000) is marked: (30,000 ÷ 40,000) x 400 = 300

The tenderer with the highest combined score for all sub-criteria will be deemed to be the most economically advantageous for the cost part of the evaluation for each Lot.

Qualitative Vehicle Testing

Actually it appears there are no marks for the assessment of the vehicle, it's just a pass or fail, as to whether it meets the requirements.

For each separate lot the tender with the highest marks, calculated as above will be regarded as the lead tender.
The vehicle concerned will then be the subject of Qualitative Testing by An Garda Síochána, as set out in Attachment
6, unless it has already been shown to meet Garda requirements under the Qualitative Testing criteria.

If required, a Garda base vehicle as per the model tendered in any relevant Lot must be supplied for testing within 6 weeks of being requested.
Failure to provide such a vehicle within this timeframe will result in your tender being eliminated at that point.

The winning tender in each band shall be the lead tender which meets all requirements of the qualitative testing.

If the vehicle is deemed suitable for operational requirements, it will be purchased and retained.

If the vehicle fails to meet the requirements under any of the Qualitative Testing criteria, it shall be eliminated from the competition, and the tender with the next highest marks shall become the lead tender.

If the vehicle is deemed unsuitable for operational requirements, it shall be returned to the supplier and decommissioned as a Garda vehicle at no cost to An Garda Síochána.
A certificate of decommission shall be supplied to An Garda Síochána to this effect.

All vehicles presented for testing will be put onto the Garda fleet and insurance will be covered by the State in respect of all claims for injury, loss or damage.

Thanks for posting that, it was very informative.

Given that these are public tenders, does anyone know if the submitted tenders are available anywhere. I would be very vinterested to see what Hyundai's competition was for the last tender.

The 192 Lexus was brought in for the former Tanaiste. ( who is now looking to retain his security status) It is part of the protection fleet.
L&P decided to hold over for the new Taoiseach when the election was called.
It was sent to the Aras for viewing by the current resident, with a view to him possible getting the "Presidential " version of same.

Those Kona’s really are an appalling looking bucket of crap, possibly the worst car I’ve seen AGS given since the fiesta’s a few years ago.
Whoever decided these were a suitable vehicle for any aspect of policing needs a serious kick in the hole, or at the very least, ordered to spend a month as a tag along with the people who are actually expected to use them!

I think the auto 1.6 is 136ps and the manual is 115ps. About 10 secs 0-60
