Maybe I'm being a bit "people's champion " here but I think there's no need to take a public service ambulance and crew off 999 duty for some foreign dignitaries when there are any amount of private ambulance services or even an army ambulance, who could step in there.
You say you would rather have it there and not need it, well that could mean someone having a heart attack and that ambulance is not where it's needed the most.

What about the Limerick gang's X5 that the CAB seized for their use ? Problem is that the gardai sign a contract with the companies ie hyundai or ford so I wouldnt imagine seeing them in the next year or two

FAO Odean, again as Pogan said welcome to the forum, i noticed over in the vehicle gallery thread that you stated that you doubted that the 05 BMW RSU 4 x 4 that is in service in Anglesea St.

Well it actually is, i saw it myself exiting off the N40 at the Wilton Exit on Friday.

PS RSU is short for Regional Support Unit, so it is immaterial as to which Cork district it is in, or for that matter any.

An armoured x5 with massive milage and if necessary a new engine-gearbox-suspension and brakes wouldn't be all that bad -

Well there's quite a few 11/12 Superbs in use, and of course the powers that be will be planning ahead for when the Ford/Hyundai contract is due for renewal :rolleyes:

The contracts get changed every year like im sure you have seen the new fiat vans and plenty of other cars

The reason I doubted it was that it apparantly is an armoured one which are not used by RSU at all only special branch have hardshell cars, I know what RSU means haha

100% it's bulletresitant in cork, doors in it weight a fair bit.

There was a tender for vans when them fiat vans came on they meant to be mobile offices didn't work so traffic and some regulars got them.

They don't need to tender for certain cars if it's below certain amount e.g for specialist units

And of course the custom built Traffic Opels.
They are not Ford's or Hyundai's either.

The armoured range rover that the guards bought in I think 2007/8 might be wrong on year but I thon it was a waste because they get them for free from range rover when they need them plus with the money they spent on the range rover they probably could of bought 2-3 armoured bmw's or similar high end cars

I can state with absolute certainty that the gun lockers are still in place in the boot of the volvos.

Let's not forget that these cars were purchased direct from Volvo as police vehicles. The only retrofitting that happened here was the installation of comms equipment. These cars were built to take the weight and abuse they would encounter in their role.

No retrofitting, they came ready to go.

And I've never heard even the faintest rumour about the safe and chassis issue. I'm calling bull****. If you have evidence to the contrary Odeon then take a picture and post it.

I wasn't suggesting there was retrofitting, just saying that garda radios were put in then when they arrived.

I remember a heap of them around the square in the college when they first arrived. Awesome sight.

You can but we didn't have tetra outside a couple of districts in Dublin back in 08 tetra didn't go live till 2009. RSU were definitely live when I started in my station in 08.

So in 7 years only 5 had to be replaced not bad considering what they are used for.

One of them were also in a very bad crash a while goin cork. Head on collision with a garda transit wasnt it...

Ya, the 05 X5 replaced it. There's a newer 131 X5 floating about too somewhere

I was never a fan of those Bmw x5's myself. Very suitable for the role though and nice ground clearance on them. I'd say height would be a great advantage at times..

I also wondered why they never used mitsubishi pajeros.
