Seeing the Gardaí buying a lot of new jeeps lately on here but why all the different makes and models? Audi, Ford & Mitsubshi, would one not be suitable for all units that need jeeps? Better deal to be had buying in bulk surely

Could be to do with tendering. I believe you don't need to tender if the order is small enough.

But when a cars on the road 20 hours a day then you can understand reason why proper patrol cars are need

I think the i40 is great car

Only washed once a week also...i30 has a lovely under carriage guard which likes to hold onto dirt I'm not sure if the same is on the i40.

Have management bought any i40 saloons that are marked?

I like the new Pajero and Ranger. Think the markings are good too. Better to be too visible than not visible enough, especially on an unlit motorway at night.

And they compare well to the Met Police ones.

The Garda Traffic got one on Friday.. it looks nice.. automatic, too!

Strange thing is with the announcement before that Hyundai were supplying cars AND jeeps, I've seen no Hyundai Tuscon/Santa Fe's about - everything else but no Hyundais (Saw an 11 unmarked Isuzu D-max twin cab the other evening )

Also saw a Mercedes Sprinter 4x4 belonging to the BTSB (Blood) , the 2 snows of 09/10 changed the mindset of vehicle purchasing. - thought it'll probably be another 20 years before we get snowfall like that again !

Tender with Hyundai was i30 and i40s not for Santa Fe, it was rumoured may still happen stations get one but limited purchase on these for the moment

I think having jeeps attached to stations would be a nice addition. I'm hearing good things about the new hyundai jeeps too.

On another note, Seen an i40 estate yesterday, they look HUGE from the outside. They must be spacious?

    They are roomy alright.

Saw the Pajero at a SuperMAT checkpoint at the weekend. It looks well.

Seen two unmarked Insignias today, one estate and one saloon, very inconspicuous, looked to be a high spec model. Guessing these are the bi-turbo versions and also replacements for the advanced Mondeos ?

The saloons I've seen are standard enough they have some fitted with anpr and sensor above rear reg plate which stands out.

    biturbo units are estates

    Limited purchase doesn't need it

Thanks Pogan, not a Hyundai in sight, obviously not good enough for some tasks.

Did anything more ever come of the speculation that Ford were going to supply the next big tender ? Some of the 12 and 131 Focus estates probably don't have another year or two left in them.

These are specialist unit so they get these but i40 isn't Mondeo but not the worse

Rumour of traffic getting them end of this year

Also couple 12 marked focus that need replacing or redeployment soon

With a bit of hope ford get it and reissue mondeos, the i30 looks nice but are an awful patrol car, especially with the tetra set up in them, very limited space to put the wiring through to all speakers.
At least in the mondeo all four speakers were wired properly.

Funny one for you folks, just on a train to Maynooth and looked into Store Street's car park, saw a large van possibly a merc, only got a glance but it was marked up with Police on the bonnet and sides and looked like a UK vehicle, had low profile light bars and riot screens on the front window. Will try to get a pic if it is there when I pass again.

I saw one of the new Q7s in Limerick earlier. Fine yoke in the flesh. It had 3 unmarked squad cars behind it struggling to keep up.

Here are some Met Police Special Escort Group escorting a silver Merc Sprinter, presumably with a special prisoner in the back. The two guys in the front of the Sprinter were wearing dark blue workwear with police patches on them, same as the boys in the Range Rover.

Even though it's presumably not VIP transport, the motorcyclists were still using whistles.

    A very impressive sight.

Maybe when the 'grand reorganisation ' get's underway  they might reintroduce training in the use of whistles and arms (limbs, not guns) to control traffic/crowds - AGS don't seem to 'do' whistles like other forces do ;)

The reason the special escort group use whistles is that it was discovered that with the large amount sirens used in London, they were more effective. Londoners had become deaf to the sound of sirens as they were so used to them whereas a whistle is considered an unusual sound to hear on a city street these days. Afaik, those SEG bikes aren't even fitted with sirens

I had heard that it was to be less intrusive for the VIP passengers. They are very discreet, there's barely a police marking on the bikes compared to other Met motorbikes. Probably a mix of both.

All the bikes have SEG as the last three digits on their numberplate. Also, the bikers carry guns. I'd imagine it is a very heavy training course to get in.
