It was fine for about a mile, then started to get quite painful until I stopped. It feels fine when walking, it's just running that's the problem. I must have seriously crocked myself in Barcelona :(

That's the norm I'm afraid. A stretch that works for me is:

    This is for left leg

Stand a foot and a half or so away from a wall sideways with you right side facing the wall. Place you right hand on the wall and cross you left leg behind you right leg. Now push away from the wall with you right arm, creating an arc away from the wall in your left leg. Ensure your left foot is parallel with wall. You might feel it at the hip insertion point. I hold it for 15-20 secs.

I also use a rolling pin for rolling now, I vary the weight I put on it using my hands for support. I know its frustrating but it will get better. Good luck RK, I feel your pain literally.

One more thing, running on grass helps, and improving form also helps. Please feel free to ask me anything. Mine are tired and tight tonight, so rest day required.

When I was coming back from my ITB injury I started with about 5 mins of walking then ran slow for about 10 minutes then walked 5 then ran. It was the only way I could build up the milage without causing pain. Took me a long time to get back to running without having to take such long walking breaks but then again I didnt do anything like regular physio appointments or change my runners or foam roll it. So I bet things will get better for you much quicker RK

A couple more massages and you should be good to go. I know it's bloody frustrating but keep them up and it WILL get you back. My offer is still there if you want to save some dosh, this is an exclusive offer open only to you, before anyone else gets any ideas!

Being injured sucks, especially when you're on such a high after doing so well in Barca. Have you tried aqua jogging? Was talking to a patient about it today, best place to do it seems to be out in Blanchardstown, I'd look a right tool in my gyms pool doing aqua jogging. Then again, people walk/stand in the middle of lanes and classify that as exercise so who cares what I'd look like.

You're on, I'll do fcuking anything to get back on the road tbh.

When I had ITB troubles I found that it helped to up mileage "by feel" - i.e. I'd go out and run until the ITB started up. Then I would shut it down immediately. Gradually I was able to add one mile after another.
It was fine for about a mile, then started to get quite painful until I stopped.

Exactly ! But stop as soon as you become aware of it ! The temptation is to continue "cause maybe it won't get any worse". Don't do it !
It is frustrating but it is the only way.

I was a bit hasty about being happy there the other day. Went out for a test run this evening, had to stop after about a mile and a half because it was getting bloody painful. Brb getting really ****ing emo. Have done everything absolutely perfectly since I got the injury - lots of stretching and strengthening work, I even dropped a huge wad of cash on new runners, I've foam rolled to within an inch of my ITB's life...

    *le sigh*

I'm sorry to hear that bud.

    Funny cos it's true :pac:

Going to see if I can haul my ass out of the bed at stupid o'clock tomorrow for a swim before work, after noticing that a pool near work has a 7.45am lane swim (therefore giving me plenty of time to get to work by 9). This plan may fail though because I like my bed :pac:

    How about this for a suggestion and i'm no expert;

Do nothing at all for a week. Maybe you're overdoing the rehab and not giving your body a chance to recover. I've always found that nature is the best healer, it certainly won't do you any harm.

This will inspire you and give you hope, best article ever written on sports injuries, although i'm biased!

Hang in there J, you'll be back out again in no time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭RubyK

I know it's headwrecking RK, but better off another week or so now, rather than pushing on and doing more damage to yourself. You want to be 100% going into DCM 2011 training. No harm in a bit more rest and recovery. Hopefully, you'll be ok for some swimming, and that will keep you ticking over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

You know, if this doesn't heal up quickly I may be better off not doing DCM '11 at all. Might be better to really spend a long time focusing on recovery and the shorter stuff (and maybe cut my XC teeth in the autumn!), before getting into a training cycle for a 2012 spring marathon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,554 ✭✭✭Mr Slow

When I started running back in 2007, I got an ITB ijnury cos I ran the first 14M of the Cork marathon then joined my relay partner to run the last mile while the legs were still tired. That was in June and I had plenty of time to get it sorted and do my first marathon in DCM07. I didnt even have Physio or anything, so I'm sure you'll recover even quicker.

    Dont write anything off yet!!!

yeah, sure its only April an 18 week DCM plan wouldn't start until the end of June, so you've ten full weeks for recovery

Lot of recovery to be done though when I can only run for 10 minutes at the moment...

Would running on a treadmill help? When my IT Band came at me it was the constant tensioning (if that's a word) of impact plus the overuse issues, a treadmill would lesson that greatly. Just a thought.:)

I honestly don't know, my gait gets very awkward (even more so than normal) on a treadmill so I'd be a little concerned about it. Might try it though, just on the off-chance that it does help...

Even slowly, at least you'd be moving and the gait issues wouldn't have as much effect with the lessened impact.

I'm not worried about cost, it's value for money I'm interested in :pac:

Stretch, strengthen, ice, foam roller, lather, rinse, repeat. Going to try a 5-10 minute run in the morning and see how that goes. Also got another physio appointment tomorrow.

You should. Park the marathons for a while and give the shorter stuff a go. It'll make you faster, give you quicker leg turn over, you'll get stronger and will only benefit your longer stuff. It'll also open up a new world for you.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,144 ✭✭✭Bally8

Might be a good idea to look at the shorter stuff RK but just to let you know it was Feb of 2009 when I first got my ITB injury and thats the year I ran my only marathon. You will recover from this!

10 minutes walk, 7 and a half minute run, 10 minute walk. No pain. That's fcuking depressing to know that my run limit at the moment is somewhere between 8 and 14 minutes.

Give yourself time, you have plenty of it, I know this is easy to write, but get sorted out properly rather than just pushing on.
It seems to me with all injuries that us runners largely only want to treat the symptoms and then get back out on the road rather than treat the cause.
The body is a feat of biomechanical engineering and sometimes we don't treat it right. You could be running IT band painless in a few weeks and break down again in peak weeks for the marathon. Find out what's causing your difficulties and try to put it to right. Then worry about your marathons.

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

Throw your pre Barca goals for this year out the window, RK. This year your goal has to be to get your body strong. I dont really know you, never met you, but from reading here, youve been plagued with injury for the past year, as far as I can see. Its easy for me to say forget your original goals, I wouldnt like being told that, but from reading here, your body keeps breaking down at long distance. I only ran one mara, I knew my body didnt like that kind of distance, I kept getting niggly injuries. So I decided to move to something else.

I sympathise with you, the frustration of not being able to train is a headwreck. Whatever you decide to do I hope the year improves for you.

I hate admitting this, but both of you are right. I need to sort out the underlying cause of my injuries before I can really think about anything else. The problem there is that at the moment I'm still kinda in the stubborn "/pout, I don't WANT to think about anything else" phase! I can understand spending this year working on shorter stuff, but long-term I can't imagine *not* running another marathon, because I just really do like going long.

Went to physio today, that was bloody painful. First time in 3 sessions with CF where I found myself wanting to claw the side of the plinth at certain points. Note to self: Don't wear a Man U jersey to that again. Will be trying 10 walk - 12 run - 10 walk on Monday, and will probably swim tomorrow. Let's see how this goes... *sigh*
