Applying the current metrics that appear to be used to implement restrictions I can’t imagine concerts or similar gathering’s occurring for a significant amount of time. Year’s unless something changes in the approach

Even when we had single digits cases for a period of time they wouldn't even open the pubs up. I wouldn't be holding out any hope of them happening here for a number of years. Best bet will be to head to the continent for them.

I wonder if those people in favor of this lockdown and all these restrictions, the ones that are so afraid of catching a flu and having the remote possibility of dying, yes , I wonder if they don't realize that surviving in this way is like being already dead.
My brain is already switching off, I seriously have difficulties to process tasks that previously were part of my routine, part of my being alive.
I hope that the majority will realize what we are doing to ourselves, the level of hysteria is unreal: before I went to the doctor with a health issue and he/she would send me for a test; today the doctor want to send me for a test to tell me that I have a health issue

They won’t want restrictions on their own lives at Christmas too

In my opinion, until this CMO is removed from office then there will be no relaxation of restrictions.

Share Ross's new book seems to have an interesting view:
Senior ministers warned Covid-19 restrictions will cause a “police State” and insisted the Leaving Cert should not have been cancelled at private Cabinet meetings during the pandemic.

In former Transport Minister Shane Ross’s new book In Bed With The Blueshirts, he also says some Cabinet colleagues “deeply resented” the lack of consultation they received on significant coronavirus decision.

The behind closed doors Cabinet insights are based on notes Ross privately took during private meetings and have been reproduced in a book published today.

Rest of the article is behind a paywall, but probably worth a read for those who can. I'd say not much has changed from the little we have seen/heard since.

It seems the media get a briefing from Tony before cabinet do.

    Hello. Yes, certainly.

It is the very nature of the care of the elderly, those in care or congregating setting and homes, and the vulnerable, that they rely on close contact with carers for many aspects of their lives. This can be everything from basic life activities, nursing care, and various medical supports. And requires this close contact with a high number of people, who are also working with multiple service users.

This adds up to a very high number of workers who are otherwise interacting with the rest of society as they go about their daily activities outside their work setting.

Putting a truly strong protective barrier, between those requiring care support and wider society, through the large sector of those interfacing with both cohorts would require several unacceptable restrictions to work in a meaningful way : either a harmful reduction in service to those requiring care outweighing the covid risk, a 'firewall' sector of workers who would have to sacrifice themselves to segregate themselves from their non-work lives, or a ramp up of support staff of the order of several multiples to reduce the number of care contacts individual carers would have - and workers, facilities, skills, and resources to do not exist to do this not can be mobilised in a useful timescale.

Your patience on this topic hugely appreciated.

    Anyone watch Prime Time?

A complete Govt. nutcase trying to defend another insane Holohan restriction. I simply could not believe what I was hearing. I've come to the conclusion that anyone who would go on National TV and say what this idiot said must be under some kind of threat.

You don't get the concept of herd immunity do you.

You have benefited from other people getting the flu vaccine.

Of course you may have been lucky to get an asymptomatic case of the flu at some point.

I think you are overestimating flu vaccine efficiency and uptake.
Sure, there are a lot of adverts about "getting your flu shot" but hardly anyone is actually taking it. Just about a third of nurses in hospitals are taking it not to mention miserable levels for general public.
What herd immunity are you talking about?

you can buy a bottle of Vodka but not allowed buy a shirt or any clothes

The Virus apparently likes to target people in LIDL/ALDI non essential sections. If there closed he will leave them be

You can order/collect fast food but cant go to a gym

Farcical stuff, Monty Python and the likes would be proud

I believe they'll go to level 4 lite for Dublin and large parts of the country with the remaining on a mixture of level 3&4. There is no way the CMO wants pubs or restaurants open again this year. So there may be the appearance of a relaxation of restrictions they will still be quite draconian and not really allow people to get on with enjoying life and deciding for themselves what level of risk is acceptable to them.

It didn't take you long to change your opinion in that case...!

Anyone else in college at the moment?

This online learning shtick is f*cking horrible. Stuck in the one room all day, no college social life, lecturers who can't teach online, the list goes on.

Be interested to see the grades and / or dropout rates this year.

Junior started this year. Got over 600 points and started to study science. The poor chap sitting in front of a pc. His lectures are not even online but pre-recorded stuff. No real chance to interact or ask questions. Non-existent social life hell he does not even know who is in his course as he met just a handful of them.

Coronavirus Ireland: Christmas heartbreak for families as Dr Tony Holohan issues upsetting update (Link)

Chairman Holohan said it is simply “too dangerous” for international travel, wreaking havoc for family members who are trying to plan Christmas travel.

So we have finally found the reason as to why they wont introduce testing in Irish airports. Dr. CervicalCheck is pulling the strings and wont let the government make any movements on travel restrictions for Christmas.

I'm done playing nice with this guy. He belongs in court, facing the country and answering questions about his attempted cover up of one of the biggest health scandals in modern Irish history.

If this terrible health scandal happened in any other country he would be fired and facing prosecution for negligence.

Nah. Everything will likely crumble quite soon. Next week US election will be a start of an end of this circus. No matter who "win" chaos is coming which will set economies in a free fall. No more lockdowns because nobody would be able to afford them no more. Covid will become a side issue.

Ah, Damien English was rolled out for a few sound bites from the government and even he couldn't keep a straight face when questioned on the absurdity of the restrictions on what's essential and what's not. Sure, while trying to make his point he even admitted that it's subjected and then the next words out of his mouth were that the guidelines are very clear.
He came out with a doozy though "clothes are not essential".

People should just ignore him and his "concerns" around travel, sure it is only advisory as the Ryanair case showed. Plus, we have thousands flocking over the border every day and not a word said.

An be assured , ignore him we will. People are nearing 12 months without seeing their families. My own brother has not seen his new wife in 9 months (having been married in Nov 2019)

    Enough is enough.
According to the article linked above this unelected member of society with a very shady medical practice history is making an “edict” of NO TRAVEL for Irish citizens. (Btw an edict means “ an official order or proclamation issued by a person in authority”)

This unelected individual does not have the right to be proclaiming any such orders to anyone outside of a hospital (when some very critical medical hospital situations of life or death occur)
He is a serpent of the highest order and I’m booking a flight tonight for mid December just to spite his “edict

That segment on Prime Time was a turning point for a very pro-restrictions friend of mine who, up until today, felt we needed to stay in level 5 for the next few months! Hearing someone on about the Guards prohibiting the sale of greeting cards and flowers, what ****ing planet are people on? Blood boiling stuff. Take a look at this too,
    https://www.oceanfm.ie/2020/10/29/woman-unable-to-purchase-clothing-or-access-public-toilets-after-hospital-mishap/
A woman had an urgent need for clean clothes due an accident after attending a hospital appointment only to be refused because of the restrictions. Honest to god I’ve seen it all now. When are people going to get a bit of sense

We've really gotten ourselves stuck in a very vicious cycle in Ireland.

    1) NPHET with Tony at the helm is a 1 man team. The only advice they'll ever recommend are harsh restrictions or lockdown. For over half a year now we've had the harshest restrictions in Europe for the most part. (Some countries had very short term harsh restrictions). And they are clearly using models that are not fit for purpose.

    2) The media are not bothering with journalism anymore. They just drip feed us constant negativity and fear mongering. Sadly the Irish people lap it all up. Anyone that disagrees is an anti masker or right wing lunatic.

    3) The government are afraid to show leadership. They were harshly destroyed by the media and the hysterical public for going against NPHET advice a few weeks back.

    4) Too many people have it too handy. Working from home and saving time and money. Hospitals are quieter than ever for our medical workers. Streets are quieter than ever for the Garda. They are getting paid overtime just to ask people where they are going. Lots of public sector still not back to full time hours but have been getting full time pay throughout.

I really fear that we are going to continue this way until next summer at least. Around then we will probably need to start having a more grown up conversation about the future as our finances hit all time lows.

I'd love to know the % of public v private sector working from home. Quite a few of my social circle in both civil service and IT /fintech are WFH but can't find any official figures.
