Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    The daily numbers

    Mod warnings:
    1. Please interact in a civil manner
    2. Do not tell others what to do, or what to post
    3. It is against site rules to seek or offer any medical advice. Please do not post here about your symptoms asking what to do. Contact your doctor by telephone and they can advise you as appropriate
    4. If you have a problem with a post report it and leave the modding to the mods

    In terms of thread content:
    • Treat everything you read here with caution. Anything posted is from an anonymous internet poster. You cannot assume anyone has any "specialist" knowledge whatever they claim
    • Statistics are important to some (and I personally pay a lot of attention to them), but they are of very little use to anyone who is already caught up in this, or indeed knows of people who are caught up
    • Whatever your own views are please recognise others are entitled to different views., Even if at different extremes please do not try and repeatedly ram your views down the throats of those who have differing views
    • Cut out any cover-up/conspiracy stuff. If you have a reliable source quote it (not just their words but provide a link to a reliable source) - otherwise your claims carry little if any weight. If you wish to discuss conspiracy theories we have a dedicated forum for that and it’s not this one
    • If the likes of the HSE have a verified Twitter account we can assume what they post is accurate. Randomers on here or elsewhere cannot be considered "official" or "reliable" sources
    • If people wish to flout the restriction rules that is up to them. They cannot complain at the consequences, be that direct action from the authorities, exposure in Social Media (not here) or being shunned by locals, friends, family etc. If they post about it here, or encourage others to flout the rules, trying to appear macho, or thinking they are above the rules or simply being a smart arse, posting privileges will be removed
    • If you don't want to see discussion about Trump perhaps stay clear of this thread between the hours of 22:00 and 01:00. This is a thread for "breaking news" so please do not expect posters to discuss things happening "now" in other threads. It's not discouraged but equally posters expect to discuss such issues in this thread (added 14/04/20)
    And now a maths lesson:
“Average” is a non-defined term. “Mean” and “Median” are both mathematically defined terms.
Mean = the sum of a series of numbers divided by the number of items in the series
    Hence the Mean of 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 7, 8 = (1+2+3+3+4+7+8)/7 = 4
Median is the midpoint number. In the above example it’s the 4th number in the sequence of 7 numbers – in this case 3
Both numbers are examples of “averages”. Not every average is the “Mean”, not every average is the “Median”, but every “Mean” and every “Median” number is an average

All threadbans carry over, but we will reconsider if anyone wishes to discuss it further via PM

Replied to you too late on the old thread:

Possibly due to the low level of cases that "Data Validation" activity is no longer being completed to the same level at the weekend while testing continues at pace. Maybe the start of a weekend lag in our data which we previously did not have?

I think you're right yeah. This has happened mid week however, it also happened last Thursday. We must just get used to it!

Does the post count fall off match the rate of daily cases. It seemed a few months ago we have a new thread every few days. The R number of posts may be a reliable indicator of the current spread of the virus?

I would like when all this is officially over to create a summary of the threads into a single post with how the following changed over the course of time:
    • Post frequency
    • What people wanted (Stop flights/lock down now/open up now/stop flights)
    • Biggest worry (Italian rugby fans/cheltenham/cleaning groceries/joggers breathing/BLM protests/'Muricans)
    • Best of WhatsApp (Hotel on Pearse Street/Army on the streets/"Dear Pub Owner" letter)

Would the 1 death be that doctor from the Mater who passed away or are deaths reported that quickly?

    Behind closed doors.

I'm down here for a few days at the moment, hotels have plenty of rooms for next week, there really won't be that many traveling by all accounts and bars & restaurants are booked out most days already.

Does anyone know why the recovery number hasn't been revised over the last few weeks? it's creeping back up, I know there has been an increase in new cases but surely there have been recoveries also?

The rogue number yesterday is put into context but I’m sure the media will focus on the negative

Let’s get back living and moving

Can we just look at what Germany is doing and copy it so we can live alongside the virus and prosper with only minimal local lockdowns

One thing I've spotted about yesterday's figures is the demographic is actually quite a bit older. 19 cases out of 36 yesterday were over the age of 45.

This time last week Glynn alluded to us having daily cases well in excess of 50 by now

We have been sold a dud

Aye The RTE app is already at it now, running a headline “Virus could cause “huge loss” in hospital bed capacity.

I think we heard that at the beginning.

When will the government begin to realize that this has become a Dublin centric problem.

Moving forward, localized restrictions as needed make a lot more sense. It baffles me how a large nightclub in Dublin or Galway is considered the same as a rural pub where the publican will likely know 85-90% of customers on a first name basis.

I truly feel sorry for all the publicans who invested in getting their premises ready only to be blindsided at the last minute. Pathetic.

You’d imagine though, given the positive surge over the weekend and the site only closed Monday, that the bulk of the cases were in yesterday’s number

Thats stupid logic. Population is both higher and more dense in Dublin (don't...)

If you localise restrictions in Dublin, my fellow jackeens will be all over your Country pubs like a rash. Same goes for any other large town.

Sure but it's his apparent inclination to get into the prediction game that has seen people asking questions. Apart from the infamous "15000 cases in March", I don't recall Holohan ever doing that.

Much of the health advice is bang on and working . Kudos and fair play.

However there is a middle ground where we can do well clinically and also ensure our economy and vital travel links are kept open

Tbh we aren’t far off it but I think there has been far too much negativity surrounding our situation and this is having profound effects on the mental health and livelihood of hundreds of thousands of Irish men and women.

We need a mature and honest discussion about this, this isn’t going away anytime soon. We need a collective agreement about what our priorities are but also who we are going to cast to the he ditch by making these decisions

In experience , I have always found the middle ground is the best and this can be found.

However, IMO our position at the moment is far too conservative and will destroy our economy and the mental well being of over 500,000 Irish citizens with family abroad

What for? Staines is a known hawk on these things, the domestic numbers don't justify it and tracking and cluster identification is strong.

So fcking frustrating watching the news.

Showing clips of Richard Boyd Barrett banging on about confusion and how it's like a "set of traffic lights" with both the green light and the red light on at the same time.

No, it isn't. How does he not get it. The advice is clearly not to travel, but fortunately we live in a state where the government doesn't have the powers to keep us all on the island against our will, they can only advise. A green list isn't a signal to go on holidays to these countries. And then RTE compound it by talking about it as if it is. Why, why is there so much dumb?
