Never said it was a positive or that AZ wasn't effective. All vaccines seems to eradicate death/hospitalisation. Just that more people will receive a vaccine with higher efficacy which will lead to less transmission long-term. Pfizer prevents transmission by 94% compare to AZ at ~ 50%.

Can you provide sources for these claims?

Pfizer is not 94% effective at preventing transmisison.
That figure relates to asymptomatic cases only.

1 in 5 over 70's have now received one dose

1 in 16,000 have received a second, lucky them!

Can anyone find confirmation of EU 100 million doses order? I've been searching for it but any links I can find refer to the commission still faffing about with the order.

My brother, 25 with no underlying conditions, is getting it in the US next week. Shows how far ahead of us they are.

    All,
Does anyone have a link/source that looks at each countries geo sequence for covid variant, capabilities, current rate of sequencing, plus plan to increase variant awareness, so adjusting vaccines etc.

I guess it everywhere will be ramping up. How much is carried out in Ireland do we know ?
With the first Danish variant (in mink) then Kent, South Africa, Brasil, Californian, NYC etc, it will be important step in developing adjusting testing and vaccines.

Genome sequencing is something that can be done in hospitals labs around the country too, not just the NVRL.

It would not be very expensive either as it can be added on to the existing PCR platforms that are already in place.

Investing in laboratory diagnostics nationwide would be a huge advantage, not just for covid19 but for the future.

The powers that be have overlooked this for years. Hopefully it's time for things to change.

I don't think it's been officially announced, but they were about to announce a 100M order with option for 100M more in January, so it sounds like something's been done behind the scenes, but isn't in the public domain yet.

It's even higher. 97% for symptomatic and 94% for asymptomatic so a blended rate of 95%+. Source was the huge real life data from Israel yesterday. It was March data too so included the variants now prevalent in Israel. This is why I was extolling the virtues of Pfizer vaccine earlier. It does look like it is the best. Doesn't mean I wouldn't happily take AZ if offered it tomorrow of course.....

So according to the Vaccine Calculator, I should get my second vaccine dose sometime between November 2021 and April 2022. Very disappointed , thought I would get it much sooner

Could be about MM helping AZ to get US warehoused vaccine released to Europe by raising it with Biden next week. By the time AZ gets approved in the US they may not need it as they have shed loads coming on stream.

Do people still actually believe that thing ?? It was basically branded as rubbish weeks ago.

Actually MM is going to try and secure vaccines for the whole of Cork and then declare it a republic.

Yeah but a poster I was arguing on a separate thread basically 3 months ago at this stage was saying the deal was about to be signed.

Something has likely happened behind the scenes as I highlighted earlier in this thread.

Apart from India who may or may not have orders (seems to be varying reports nothing officially up on their own website) every other location with an production plant has an official order, they also have 60 to 110 million doses to places without production facilities (60 million to Oz and the Kiwi's who definitely don't have production, Canada order before seperate deal to build up production) which is relevant if there is doubts about ability of export from the EU.

Does anyone believe a single word from Astra Zenecas CEO ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,208 ✭✭✭✭Stark

To be fair to MM, if they're willing to give the entire EU27 bloc the runaround, there's not much the leader of a small country can do. I feel almost bad for him sometimes when I see him being interviewed by RTE presenters who ask unintelligent questions and have obviously not done any research. I'm all for making politicians squirm with tough questions but repeating the same stupid question that's already been answered because you haven't done enough homework to move on with the questions is tiresome. I always imagine the things I'd like to say in his position but he obviously can't. Like "What's the point then of meeting the Astrazenaca CEO, Taoiseach?". "It's to humour you whingy ****ebags".

Kind of old news by now. The US withholding Astra Zenica vaccines.

    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2021/0312/1203515-coronavirus-global/

I find this a strange move. Its not likely to be approved until April plus I actually don't think there'll be a huge appetite by the public to take this vaccine over there, especially as they shouldn't have a shortage of other vaccines doses to use.

In a few months all those labs currently doing COVID tests will be able to switch to other uses surely.

Over blood clots linked to AstraZeneca jab?

They are stockpiling it ahead of FDA approval next month. Nothing to do with that story which I'm fairly sure a link has yet to be substantiated anyway.

I don't think those stories will help but I think the US will have so many vaccines available that some may be willing to wait a little longer to get a vaccine with a slight better reputation (that was the case before the blood clot links which I think will be shown to be not an issue)

A few weeks ago I checked the calculator to see when i could expect to get my vaccine - it said June for the first dose. Just checked again and now it's saying I can expect to get my first dose in September/October. I'm so utterly p1ssed off now:eek:

Like other posters have stated, it’s a load of bollox. You’d be better of using your time researching where to go on holidays when this crap is over.
