At this rate we could be under 200 a day in two weeks time. A number in the 100’s at the end of level 5 would actually be a terrible number. Too low to continue with level 5 but too high to go to much lower restrictions.

Because there was some good news today with lower cases, couldn't be having that, the misery agenda needs to be peddled.

Then Armageddon George, the gormless cretin is wheeled out waxing lyrical about 23 to 60 odd year olds increasing their social contacts. No mention of the healthcare workers being cannon fodder for the Rona in our ill equipped hospitals. Tony is like a WWI general, over the top with you plebs.

One would wonder what broadcasting standards authorities etc make of the fear mongering narrative.

Cases will continue to drop even when we open back up (initially).
If cases are falling, r0 dropping, we could still hit 100 cases a day, just it could be a week into opening. It's more the trajectory we're on than the figures we're at, at any given day.

R number would have to be no higher than 0.5 right now which it isn't and there is no evidence or trends to indicate this will happen on current 5/7/14 Day averages and percentages

5 days waiting on test results, tested in croke park Monday as I had bronchial issues and fatigue, much improved now but I have had no results and rang Hse helpline twice . Really frustrating at this stage , I have done what was asked isolating in bedroom. My husband cannot return to work till I get negative results hopefully.

Is it any wonder we have high numbers many people would not wait this long and follow the rules on isolating. This will put me off going for tests again. Its ridiculous the length if time we wait for a result plus any contacts I had are carrying on as normal

The numbers seem to be steadily decreasing though. We seem to have had a minor spike which may be over. Things are not clear but it is possible that numbers could come well down in the next two weeks

The ‘it’s only as bad as influenza’ argument was outdated months ago. It’s not a flu, the reactions made by governments the world over make that obvious. When was the last time anyone ever heard of hospitals having to administer oxygen in car parks, or ventilator numbers not meeting demand and resulting in excess deaths. It’s strange times. But all this has all been repeated ad naseum.

I think attitudes change drastically when you know someone that suffered from Covid and died from it. As sad as that is.

Personally I like to think that my inability to visit family, travel or socialize doesn’t make my life so miserable or controlled to not be valuable and enjoyable. The virus being global, with every country will have economic repercussions gives me some peace of mind.

Do I believe the virus is non-deadly to my age group? Statistically yes, I’m golden, no underlying conditions and not in any risk group. Does this make me resent the lockdowns and restrictions? No. I can put my needs aside in the hope that someone else doesn’t suffer.


WHAT I AM TERRIFIED off is the fact that when faced with a global pandemic, a very real novel virus. Something not easily diluted down to an us vs them with a villain/group to loathe and a hero to rally behind. Where the greatest offence and defense is to limit interactions and stay at home. A huge amount to the public just can’t accept changes or at worst put their life on hold temporarily. It took mere weeks before we had people marching and protesting, cries of a mental health catastrophe, government conspiracy and draconian life altering measures. I had a colleague who’s greatest concerns (I **** you not) was not being able to travel abroad on his second sun holiday this year, deferring plans on buying a new Audi and that wearing a mask made his nose sweat. Meanwhile I was reading about India’s first lockdown and trying to gain perspective.


The reason I’m terrified is now we know the reaction and ability a large chunk of people will have if there is a novel virus THAT IS life threatening. Let’s say a new virus with a ... we’ll say 40% death rate. I wish I could say people would react differently, but honestly. I don’t think they would. That’s scary. It’s terrifying to know that people can’t even write off a year in order to save someone multiple. The fact that everything I’ve spewed here will do nothing to change the opinions of someone who feels strongly against the restrictions and actions taken is also not lost on me.

I think they would react differently because of the greater likelihood of death being caused by infection.

If there is the slightest suspicion of a novel virus that has anything like a 40% death rate then governments would suspend travel to and from the country that would have the initial outbreak straight away, especially if it's in China!

Of course this virus - SARS CoV 2 - is more serious than the flu but neither is it as deadly as bubonic plague or anthrax or smallpox.

That's not correct , a close contact has 2 tests one at day 5 i think and another a week later , my nephew had to. Contact tracers told me my husband did not need to restrict his movement while I await results, Incorrect , Gp told me he had to and it's on the printed leaflet I got at test centre .

I've seen this a lot on this thread, contact tracers or contract tracers? Which one is it and which one is correct, is contract a genuine typo?. I'd go with the first one.

Double check your messages, when i got my result, I missed the message from the hse initially as it came in while on a call.

Your test is likely done and processed and the issue may be due to your contact information.
Ring your GP. They should be able to access your result.

They didn't though. When this kicked off in January (on boards, as opposed to whenever the original virus surfaced), there were what, 20-25% fatality rates reported? Those rates turned out to be way overestimated thankfully, but they did not know that at the time, and they did nothing. When Lombardy was overrun, and doctors were having to decide which patients to treat, and which to let die, there were people still coming and going on their skiing holidays.

Probably because 30000 people don't travel between Ireland and Scotland every day. (That figure is from pre-covid, but I'm pretty confident the NI visitors dwarf the Scottish numbers these days too).
