We didn't test in the same scale as now or pick up as many asymptomatic cases in April. In other words the infection rate back then didn't report accurate numbers.

What do you think would be better for our economy, restrictions now during a naturally quiet time for retail or on the run up to Christmas, the biggest money maker for them?

I think shutting up shop now with strict measures will get the numbers right down for some form of normality during Christmas and the economy would be thankful.

If we go into Level 5 or even Level 4 we won't be coming out of it until March next year. There will be no going back over winter months.

We barely came out of lockdown during the summer. Not going to happen in winter.

Perhaps the stupidest post you've ever put in this site, and you've had some doozies.

First off not only is that illegal (against the GFA) and not only would that be incredibly expensive (have you any clue how many crossings there is) you do realise this covid crisis is not going to last forever yes?
We literally have farmers who march their cows through the border to get to different fields.

Level 5. It's not really going to happen though, right?

Is there no middle ground of Level 4 for Dublin and a few others and Level 3 for everywhere else?

That option was tried and is not having the desired effect so a minimum level 4 on a countrywide basis is necessary unfortunately mainly due to the fcukwits.

If measures are weak it's delaying the inevitable and prolonging uncertainty, much more costly in the medium term.

I'd rather level 5 now, cut transmission now rather than having to introduce panic restrictions at the end of October.

Not acting now leaves us in a reactionary position which is not a good place to be.

Cut transmission now and then what? Start all over again? Let people fly into the country and go wherever they want, come off flights and into pubs and family dinners.

The levels are a joke. Level 5 but schools remain open?

No they aren't because realistically they were much higher than what we were reporting because you couldn't get a test without jumping through hoops

The big one for Level 5 is:
    Stay at home.
Exercise within 5 kilometres of home.

    Level 4 is:
Stay in your county (or other defined geographical area) apart from essential work, education and other essential purposes.

So basically like March or April don't go out except for exercise or essential business.

But why would you even want to? It’s so scary out there, potential spreader units are everywhere exhaling the deadly virus . We can do everything online, even our jobs. We don’t have to leave our houses guys, we should stay home to stay safe. Hold firm, we are all in this together.

You don't but then people will take what you said as a glorified rant.

Your the one ranting and looking to cause trouble ... I highlighted the irony of asking a patient to do a covid test when they have a large no of people employed there that they never check ... there should be regular checks on them... only common sense.

Heres an article from inmo who highlights the high level of healthcare workers getting covid

Get your facts from that if u want ...

There wouldn't be any issue with another lockdown if it was part of a wider strategy but that doesn't seem to be the case. Eliminating the virus like other countries was never considered.

    Never say never.
So many on here thought the idea of seeing 100+ cases a day was never going to happen again.
Couple of weeks ago same sort thought Dublin wouldn't get locked down.

    Lessons to be learned:
No one knows what's going to happen.
Pay no attention to people's opinions on this matter.

Whatever about school transmission, if college students are all away in Dublin, Galway, Cork etc, even if classes are online, they will socialise and the virus will spread.

The situation has obviously rapidly deteriorated since Thursday. We have had about 2300 cases in the past 5 days, approaching a 500 a day average.

I imagine 50-50 if we get a briefing this evening.

Thursday morning had 122 in hospital and 20 in ICU.

Increase of 28 and 1 hardly the need to have every county jump from level 2 to 5.

One very big difference to start with

Try get funding for a nationwide Hep C eradication program in Latvia. Ireland's health system isn't bad. In saying that, there is huge room for improvement.

I also did a quick calculation of ICU beds/100000 and we are at 5 beds/ 100k at the moment.

I'm struggling to see how schools would be able to remain open if serious about suppression.

One thing is for certain things can't stay as they are. The situation accelerates due to lack of sufficient counter measures and enforcement.

This is not all a governance problem. There are a small minority in this country who have behaved recklessly and not followed the rules. People are right to call them out but we need enforcement.

Level 5 or no level 5 the elephant in the room is the schools and the colleges.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,470 ✭✭✭tobefrank321

So shut down rural pubs and businesses that contribute little or nothing to new cases.

But leave open colleges where all the house parties are happening.

Even the Swedes had the sense to close colleges during the peak.

Yes and those people got infected 10-14 days ago. Maybe even longer.

We have 2300 infections in the past 5 days with the growth rate increasing.

So... 6 months on we've learned that 95% of those who died had underlying medical conditions...and 93% were over 65 years old...

This virus has killed 126 "under 65 year olds" (may they rest in peace). Cancer kills that many people in FIVE DAYS!!!

But.. lets just properly DESTROY the whole bloody country once and for all.

Because, F0çK knows... we did shag all to improve our shambolic healthcare system in those 6 months.

6 months on and people still haven't learned that deaths are not the primary concern.

Yeah, I'm finding that weird. Even if not a disaster, it will keep a certain amount of transmission going.

There is a mid-term coming up. Perhaps they could extend it a bit so it would be 2 weeks of level 5 and then another 2 weeks of level 5 but with schools closed.

Is it that some people do not have the capacity to project? Like toddlers they have to be told what to do because they struggle to grasp reality beyond what is directly in front of them and just like toddlers they tantrum when they can't do what they want because they can't see the danger in it.

An underlying condition does not imply a terminal underlying condition. Diabetes is an underlying condition.

the narrative from these people is that all the deaths were from people that would have died in a few days anyway. that's how they convince themselves COVID is not a problem. delusion of the highest order.
