Sometimes we need a reality check, we are no bigger a population than the City of Manchester, ( not even greater Manchester ) and we have these lofty ideas, waken up, we can`t afford it
Where did you get these figures from, I hear it all the time that we've a smaller population than Greater Manchester? And surely Greater Manchester should be bigger than City of Manchester???

I thought the whole point of scrapping fees was to help kids whose families didn't have the financial means to send them attend. It was a laudable aim but the "registration" fees are now quite high so it's likely the reintroduction of fees wouldn't make that much difference :-(
If they do reintroduce them I hope that some thought is given to a waiver scheme for low income families.

Registration fees are currently nothing near what a full year of college would cost if government subsidies were removed. Currently they are 5-6k at the most, while a full unsubsidised year would be north of 20k at least

This is just another attack on the middle class who already shoulder the responsibility for the vast majority of the tax burden, removing free third level for them but not anyone on low income who likely isnt even paying any income tax would be a huge slap in the face to the people keeping this country afloat

City of Manchester is just over 500k
Greater Manchester (which includes Bury, Oldham, Wigan, Rochdale, Bolton, Stockport and others) is 2.8million.

    so basically, that is incorrect.

Was listening earlier. She is so desperate to come across as right-on and oh so modern. The segment about sex education was embarrassing.

I'd say on average she does 2 shows a week. Any time I turn it on it's yer wan Andrea Gilligan, who is a much better presenter, knows her stuff, and doesn't tell us every day that she used to be a GP.

Perhaps time to bring back George?

Ha, yes you`re right and I`m warming to her a bit now. She was interviewing that guy from Kerry who was complaining about the booze coaches doing the Ring of Kerry and turning up at his place with the occupants twisted and rowdy when she suddenly threw in " I had better declare my interest here, my own family are publicans !!!!"

Jaysus, the listener segments are tedious enough as it is, I assume this will mean Friday is wall to wall listeners. Presumably they feel this approach is working out for them in terms of listenership figures.

Is this something Newstalk are pushing? I thought I head an ad for doing something similar on Moncreiff.

Caller: Hi Ciara, I'd like to talk about the constant misandristic editorial content and bias on your show.

Joe Duffy Ciara: Back after the break.

Or the listenership figures are down and they need to try something new.

Based on latest JNLR the listenership figures are up about 2k from the Hook show. Somebody likes what she is doing.

Must be looking to try a different format then which is fair enough.

Would love to call in to debate the use of VAR. She'd love that one.

I gave it a shot today but it was even more boring than usual and that's saying something. Radio off now - the best option for most of the day especially in this hot weather.

    WE GET IT! YOU'RE UNSCRIPTED!

Stop saying it every 90 seconds.

Best bit of that was the Pigeon guy, replace Paul Williams with him on the Breakfast Show...

Rarely listen to radio on a Saturday, but stuck waiting for the cousin at the train station. George is badly missed. He had eamonn Ryan on, he disagreed with all he said basically, but never talked him down. It was a good debate. Sadly missing from most shows these days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,022 ✭✭✭anthonyjmaher

Was listening to that as well. George is very very restricted in that show, like he's in a strait jacket. And as I've said on the thread I can no longer tune in to the show as that obnoxious Lara Dungan is always on for the first twenty minutes. The interview with Eamon Ryan was good, it was unique on Newstalk to find somebody actually pointing out the hypocrisy of the left on a number of the issues. If Trump does something, it is automatically bad and they fill hours of saying that he's racist, sexist etc etc ... whereas the same action by the hand of somebody a little more palatable to them is completely ignored.

I was just thinking there the other day, remember on Fridays there used to be Hook, Coleman and McIntyre for the drive home. That used to be brilliant. They had a stellar line up back then. There really is not one program that I listen to on a consistent basis now.

And just one more thing on Ciara Kelly. I heard a bit of the show the other day, not necessarily by choice. Her and her contribution laughing about certain employees being "Pale, stale and male". Can you imagine if any broadcaster referred to any other demographic in those terms. Imagine them referring to Travellers as "pale, stale and male". If you referred to any group of women in such terms, Twitter would explode and so would she.

So listen Ciara you cant have it both ways. You either have respect for all demographics. It seems like you if you are straight, white male or have any connection with the Church, you are fair game for the media to say what they like about you.

Oh and from what I heard the show is still rubbish with fake enthusiasm and constant f**king preaching. PLEASE bring back George Hook.

Bloody hell, can you come down from your cross? "The straight, white male", the must persecuted demographic on the planet...as fecken if. You constantly harp on about "the media's" propensity to take offence, yet nobody displays how easily offended they are then you, yourself, do on here...constantly.

Ivan Yates makes jokey comments like that about women all the time. So what? Nobody cares. Kelly laughs at "Pale, stale and male". Again, so what? Why do you find it so threatening?

Yup she's basically becoming the next Nora Casey, she forms her opinions on everything based on reading solely the headlines of news articles

Or whatever way the tide is flowing on that day from the feminazi perspective.

Imagine the Ciara & Norah Show? I hope I haven't just given them an idea.....

Posted this a few months ago:

They had a segment last week whereby they talked about crutch words and phrases people use when stuck for something to say, when they're unprepared (how ironic!), nervous etc. and had someone from The Terry Prone School of Spin (The Communications Clinic) in to discuss same. They played a collection of Kelly introducing segments and she must have used "and all that kinda stuff" or "and all that good stuff" in 90% of them. It was like fingernails on a blackboard.......
