Very nice! Unique too! Should have guessed from your name, but John carpenter is great, noticed "they live" amongst your pictures :p

Yeah, big John Carpenter fan. He played Vicar Street a couple of years ago. Definitely a bucket list gig to go see him

Is it just me or do they kind of look like a disguised Transformer?

I have always regretted not going to that gig. I love They Live and Darkstar.

In Belfast today for the Brian Cox show in the Odyssey.
Googled retro shops and ended up in a cracking shop called "The Game Trader".
A small store but has tons of stuff.
I got a N64 rumble Pak for £5, a Super Mario Bros 25th Anniversary DSiXL for £45 and a copy of Wolfenstein 2 for £14, pretty happy with that.
If anyone is ever up that way I'd recommend calling in.

These aren't exactly brand new pick ups, theyre from a few weeks ago. But I was messing around with them today, making a list of things I need to get/do to get them up to scratch.

First off is an electrocoin goliath. Very nice condition on the outside. They have a great mechanism for getting to the innards. It is a rotatable screen, but it also tips forward and is held in place to allow access to controls. Better than going through the back door every time! Sidenote: these cabinets are heavy, live up to the name!

Things to do: Get coin mechanisms fully working. Have them rigged up temporarily for now, maybe scour the insides for any dangerous rust (unlikely). Joysticks and buttons are perfect. Monitor and chassis are A-ok, don't even need a clean really. All round? Im giving this a solid "A" for condition (based on being rescued from the wild!)

nice cab. Very similar to the xenon. In fact a lot of xenons have that same goliath control panels.
Played on 2x of these recently in Bob's Casino Skerries:

    Part 2: Nintendo punch out.

Unfortunately it isn't an "A" like the goliath above, but a solid "B-", perhaps :)

Monitors are working fine, nice and crisp. However there is a an alignment problem I need to get at, it might be visible at the top of the top screen. But its a bingo to have the two monitors working at all, so no big deal.

It has an unusual joystick. You can pull it "up" to guard in the game. The joystick definitely needs some re-working, but its playable at least. Buttons are good, but need to replace the big "knock-out" button.

Side art is holding on for dear life, not the worst ever, but I'll probably replace it. Control panel art is fine except for the lower right side. Annoying, and the kind of thing I might not replace just to keep it all original.

Coin mechanisms are fine. Sound is fine. Even the original marquee light is still going strong, amazing! That reminds me, I haven't looked into the goliath marquee at all.

And still has the original coin collection bucket? :P

Theyre a fairly common cabinet, as far as I know all the control panels for all electrocoins of that class (see pic below) had interchangeable panels.

You just slide them to the left or the right. Very convenient :)

Was that knocking around Ireland somewhere?

It was indeed! There was an old arcade in a seaside town in Donegal (right on border with Sligo), that I remembered going into as a child, im talking waaaay back. Was passing through it before Christmas and decided to have a look about.

Long gone. Premises were just some storage lot kinda thing. Not giving up, I went into the shop next door to ask about it, long story short, I get the number of the owner, lots of back and forth for months (they always go this way!), eventually popped over, and hey presto :) Still had some nice things, but the punch out was the only machine I was after.

The usual story though. They had "loads", kept moving them around from storage to storage after they went out of fashion, eventually started destroying them rather than keep clogging up/paying for storage.

Love the punchout!! There was defo a few around years ago I remember playing it here. Think maybe Quirkeys had one at one stage and Bray or Skerries.

Great story - is it just me or does anything arcade related these days always seem to appear up north somewhere?

Definitely Bray, 50/50 on quirkeys. Maybe Barneys too? Don't remember seeing them anywhere else, its an 1983 game, so going back a bit.

I'll always regret missing dawsons slaughter in Bray. Missed the thing by two weeks, over 200 cabinets destroyed...

Im not surprised the joystick is a bit wonky on the cabinet though, you can picture people putting their whole weight into each move like gorillas :)

haha i hate when my kids friends come over to the house and are playing my cabs\pins, i can only imagine the beating a punchout took in arcades!

Well I screwed the pooch on those other cabinets up north. Of all the ones I regret missing, it was that turtles cabinet :/

That said, I know of quite a few places dotted all around the country by now. The one place I keep hearing promising things about is Kerry. Theres an operator or two down there that are sitting on a ton. I know who they are, but very difficult to get in contact with.

I'll have to take a trip down there at some point soon :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,787 ✭✭✭beejee

Again, not a brand new thing, but a novelty like the others. I got these quite a while ago in another raid. I thought there was only a few, but I ended up finding all the rest of them in the warehouse :)

Im almost definite I have every single one, but need to check.

Back in the day, Capcom released mini magazines for each arcade game they released. Very weird and quirky (or should that be QuirkEy?!)

Each one is unique, some have pop-out 3d pages, others have "lonely heart" sections like the back of a newspaper and so on. I think each magazine is about 10 pages long?

There were also a few hardbook versions. Overall, I like them them a lot. I was going to sell them at one point but pulled out after all, one guy who was interested suggested framing them. Not a bad idea!

That little town sounds like Bundoran to me!
Knew it well, back in the day, when I was doing my nurse training in Sligo.
Plenty of arcades packed with cabs like the Electrocoin.

Its very sad to think how many cabs have been destroyed like this.

Nah not bundoran, some other tiny place altogether. I scoured Bundoran a long time ago, they have very little of anything left im afraid.

I distinctly remember playing Robocop there and being floored. In fact, the Robocop videotape had a few ads at the start, and one of them, unusually, was for the arcade game of Robocop. Awesome stuff at the time, looking at my commodore 64 in shame :P

Stop the presses: I think I actually found the ad for Robocop, but tell me this....that's the arecade game Ocean are trying to pass off as home computer, right?! I think so. These ads are fantastic!

If that arcade club venture I was looking into had panned out Id have well over a hundred cabinets by now. Freaking rent/property prices in this country are a joke!

I only have the three cabinets so far in the house, but there may be a few more tasty additions incoming very soon. If its worthwhile, I may take a bunch and stash them elsewhere.

If I limit things to the house, my wants are: Turtles, killer instinct 1 or 2, and house of the dead midi

If I go the "stashing" route, Im gonna pick up nintendo rtype, Nintendo playchoice, virtua cop, Mortal kombat 3/ultimate, and cabarets are always nice.

In fact rtype could squeeze into the house too. After that, that's me done with arcade cabinets (could always grab a few more pcbs though!)

Oh and everyone needs at least one generic cab like an electrocoin or silverline, the foundation of irish arcades! I wouldn't mind having a candy cabinet, but all a bit too pricey for me ( I do like that cyber lead however!)

Been there done that, don't want xenons, goliaths and sliverlines back haha ,here we had some other generic cabs in one of the arcades nothing fancy but got me into sitting down lol. I've never liked the veneered sided woodies either ....
Although the plan is to eventally get a proper centipede cab.

The Silverline 26" i have is a beast, i can only imagine what one of those Goliaths are like. Anyways its in the shed and cant fit out the door now.

An electrocoin duet is what youre pining after there, old man :P But yeah, the veneer sides are a no-no, just not for me either!

I was actually shocked. I had moved the punch out independently of the goliath. But when it came to getting them in the house I had a chance to (literally) compare the weight.

Youd think the punch out with two monitors would be the beast, it was actually fine. It was the goliath that took the biscuit. Not that theyre impossible to lift, still a two man job, but no joke either!

I almost dropped a silverline down the stairwell of three floors once. I swear it would have gone through the floor, heavy also! And how does yours not fit outside again? did you build the shed around the cabinet :P

At least we agree there :) , no it wasnt the duets we had those in another arcade and they are OK but I never wanted one of them .. I don't remember seeing these cabs anywhere else but again nothing special either not branded from what I remember either and I don't want one of them either lol

Restore begins now. 6 slot needs a good clean and battery mod. Control panel needs a fair bit of work (seller included a new overlay). Brand new EL panels were also included by the seller. I'll have to source a bezel & memory card reader (a broken one would do, its just for the look)
