You can save whatever is in your "Now Playing" as a playlist by clicking the 3 dots to bring up the menu.

I haven't tried this specifically, but I think that if you started playing an existing playlist, that would populate your "Now Playing". You could then browse your music and add more tracks to your "Now Playing", then save that as a playlist. You could try giving it the same name as your original playlist and see would it overwrite, or if not just give it a different name.

Just to add to stevemu's instructions here's a handy link with instructions to create a playlist.

I've being trying that out. It's not working the way I want it to. I go into the Music and Videos app and at the bottom of the Zune menu, I press that little musical note icon to play music. It's now playing all the tracks on my phone in random order.
What I want to be able to do is add a track that's now playing to a playlist so eventually I can build up playlists to suit listening moods.
What's actually happening is it is adding all the songs in this random playlist to my new playlist.

I wonder is there another music playing app that can create multiple playlists?

I just use Zune to create playlists. And then pin them to start screen :)

What are peoples thoughts on the whole "tiles" look of the start screen? Microsoft have gotten into that look like JR getting into oil, but I can't help but think about all the screen real estate that's wasted on some of those huge tiles.

I really hope that the 7.8 update has some sort of ability to resize them and free up some space. The most glaring example is the stock calendar tile, which only displays one event at a time, and then a huge big 18 for the date. I'd take a smaller 18 and more events any day.

Sometimes it's like they have designed the GUI as if it's for people who have eyesight problems.

I know people have different ideas about screen real estate, but for me, more information is better than clearer information. I think in this case the balance has shifted too far towards clearer information.

    Thoughts?

Great idea about the Zune playlists by the way 'Morals!

Can't agree with "more information is better than clearer information".

I think the big tiles are their to aid not just clarity but also finger navigation. Remember it has to appeal to a wide range of people not just techies, it has to appeal to non techies too.

That said theres a case to be made for more customisation of tiles, so you could combine a few of them for a detailed agenda view or similar. Which was something S60 did much better.

    It does.

I do like the way it looks at the moment with the 'negative space' concept, but in practical terms I'd prefer smaller tiles letting me see more at once. The 7.8 home screen looks pretty good to me.

Did they just release an 820 with the 920 on the way?

Their both being released sometime in November I guess

Both are due out next month (or possibly the end of this month). Though I don't know what Irish carriers will be stocking what, or when.

I assumed the would abandon the 800 now that they are tweeking the 900.

That wouldn't be a good way to widen their user base.

    Why would they do that?

Especially considering the 800 is their most popular Windows phone.

Nope. Some early rumours said early next year.

    Emphasis added above by me!

You know what, that is exactly what a lot of the problem is, and yes S60 did it really well, and it's a feature I really have missed since moving from the Nokia N8 to the Lumia 800. I am really, really missing the ability to customise things a bit on this phone. It's a real downfall for me, but hopefully 7.8 will soothe my desire for that a bit, otherwise it might be time to change phone.

It's true that the navigation is important too, and the tiles certainly do aid that, but the tiles can still be big while having more information on them, which is what I was trying to get at with the "more Vs clearer" thing. I guess the balance could be a bit more even as I feel that it's weighted towards...oh, I've said that already :).

You're bang on with the customisation thing though. Nail on the head!

A good case in point. Look at the first image on that page. See how much space is wasted on the Calendar tile? It's wild. You could have a party in there!

    Ta for the link!

Its different for different folks but for me aesthetics and performance come before, utility.

7.8 will make it easier to fit more onto the same screen without ruining the aesthetics.

Because of the huge similarities between the 800, 820, 900, 920, wouldn't it make sense to put emphasis on one instead of all four?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

The 800 and 900 are last years mid and high end models respectively, the 820 and 920 are replacing them to be this/next years mid and high end models respectively.

In theory at least, when the 820 and 920 are released, the 800 and 900 should no longer be available.

(this is why the 800 is being sold off now at such a good price, it has effectively been discontinued/superceeded)

Have a look on WPcetral.com I think they reviewed one before that was quite good and wasn't too expensive.

Hmmm, try taking photos of moving subjects, or in low light, or with the flash, it's terrible, and has been the bane of my life since I got the phone, so much so that I carry my N8 everywhere now to take photos, there is just no comparison. I'm only dying for an opportunity like this to have a rant about it.

The shots you took do look well, but there is good light and it's daytime. There are some close up ones that are out of focus (4, 5, 19), which I find is a common problem with the phone. Taking indoor shots of people is out of the question usually.

Any particular settings you used for these photos?

Macro Focus, messing around with ISO (auto ISO sucks on any phone I tried) and other settings, depends on lighting conditions. I usually take pics with tap and hold. Seems to give the best focus most of the time.

I wouldn't really bother taking too much stuff indoors. It sucks most of the time if it's dim. I presume all of that is to blame on nokia being cheap and leaving out the bsi sensor.

Some of those shots were taken in the forest with low lighting, which explains the few blurry shots.

Not saying it's the best camera out there, but it definitely isn't the worst, it's probably the best at the price its going at now.

Maybe so, but I can't understand how some cameras from a couple of years ago are outstripping the new stuff. One would imagine that they would get consistently better as time goes on, instead of deteriorating. I've only ever had Nokia phones, so I'm even more baffled when the same company releases new phones where the quality of features fluctuates as time goes on. They obviously can get it right, i.e. the N8, but then it goes downhill a bit...

Anyway, tis a moot point I guess.

Can't wait for 7.8, really hankering for something to rejuvenate my interest in this phone now!
