Thursday, 7 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS similar to yesterday's report. Rather cold at first, then progressively warmer. Most of the week's near average rainfall will come around Sunday night, Monday. Also some showers today, otherwise much of the interval dry, and when dry, partly cloudy to sunny. Strong winds at times today, then mostly moderate wind speeds, a generally decreasing trend there.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will become less windy but will remain quite cold, with a few showers. Some rather heavy and thundery showers possible but more likely encountered in Connacht, midlands, Ulster. Winds northwest 40-70 km/hr tending to die out gradually by afternoon. Some showers may produce hail and on higher slopes snow or sleet. Highs 7 to 9 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy with longer clear intervals after midnight. Showers more isolated to coastal counties of north and west. Some scattered frost inland, lows -3 to +2.

FRIDAY will also be cold but isolated showers will die out and there will be longer bright spells, morning lows -3 to +2 C and afternoon highs 7 to 11 C.

SATURDAY will be sunny with increasing high cloud in the south and west, still rather chilly after morning frosts, lows -4 to +2 C and highs 9 to 13 C.

SUNDAY will bring mostly cloudy skies, some rain at times near the south and west coasts, but this looks like it might hold off for at least part of the day before moving into other regions. A rather raw southeast wind of 40-70 km/hr, lows near 4 C and highs 11 to 14 C.

MONDAY will bring intervals of light rain and southeast breezes 30-50 km/hr, somewhat milder, lows near 7 C and highs near 15 C.

(some guidance shows the Sunday-Monday rainfalls to be rather heavy, but other sources have only about 15-20 mm, so any flooding would depend on which guidance is correct on that)

TUESDAY will be partly to mostly cloudy with remnant showers moving further north, slow clearing trend by afternoon, highs near 16 C.

The rest of next week looks more pleasant and by the Easter weekend, rather warm, highs 17-21 C. A colder regime is expected to develop in the week following that weekend.

My local weather on Wednesday was sunny but still rather cool with highs of about 8 C at our elevation and 12 C in the valley. Took a drive through the higher regions north of us, and still quite wintry there with 20-30 cm snow cover (in areas above 1,400 metres asl) and car outdoor temperature showing just 4 C, so a bit of water flowing out from snowbanks but mostly dry roads, you could certainly still ski on the snow at pass levels. Meanwhile at the site of the Masters golf tournament, Augusta GA, heavy overnight rainfalls have just about ended, by first light it should be starting to dry up but the course will be soaked and remain soft probably all day and most of Friday in cooler conditions. Mostly dry for the four days of play, warming up a bit by Sunday. Swirling winds will be a challenge.

Friday, 8 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS now to EASTER WEEKEND ...

Temperatures will be generally near average, although today and Saturday will be colder. A slow warming trend will bring temperatures up to pleasant levels by later next week. There will be a few showers around today, then more persistent rain from mid-day to late Sunday, through Monday and possibly part of Tuesday. Then it looks like it might dry up again although some guidance is more unsettled. Sunshine will probably be about average overall with some days brighter than others. Sunday-Tuesday appear likely to be relatively dull. No strong winds are expected but some blustery moderate gusts could be encountered today and again around Monday-Tuesday.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be quite cold with passing showers, some of which could be wintry especially over higher terrain in the north. These showers will be less widespread in the south and all of them should begin to die off with the fading daylight hours. Highs only around 7 to 9 C, possibly colder on higher ground. Winds northwest to north 30-50 km/hr will add a bit more chill. With the strong April sunshine, conditions will be quite variable from hour to hour depending on how strong the sunshine proves to be at any given time and location.

TONIGHT with clearing skies, a hard frost is likely, so today is probably not a good day to plant anything remotely susceptible. Lows -4 to -1 C.

SATURDAY will stay bright if not perfectly clear, with some increase in higher cloud across parts of the south and west by afternoon. Cool especially out of the sunshine, highs 8 to 10 C.

SUNDAY will be somewhat milder and rain will be trying to push in from the south and west. It may not get very far at first, eventually arriving by afternoon or evening in many areas. Moderate east to southeast winds 40-60 km/hr, lows near 5 C and highs near 12 C.

MONDAY will have intermittent rain amounting to 5-15 mm, and highs near 14 C.

TUESDAY there will still be cloud and some showers around, tending to move north later in the day. Highs near 15 C.

Guidance for the second half of the week is not that consistent across all forecast models. My preferred source based on what I've been seeing this past season or two continues to indicate nice dry and probably partly cloudy to sunny weather later in the week towards the Easter weekend. But keep in mind that other sources have more unsettled conditions. One theme may be that cooler air will try to push back from the east and might manage to succeed in spreading into Britain, and even possibly southeast counties of Ireland briefly for a day or two during this otherwise warmer spell. But further west it looks more likely to stay quite warm through that period (highs 17-21 C).

My local weather on Thursday was pleasantly mild despite a veil of high overcast that made the sunshine rather dim, with highs reaching 17 C. We have an active cold front poised to arrive Friday morning (it is currently about 11:30 pm local time here). Temperatures will take a hit and stay around where they are when the front arrives. Still, we have lost most of the snow cover locally now, and it is all gone at any elevations lower than ours, with golf courses open in valley areas, while they continue to wait for the frost to come out of the ground locally. Lots of robins around the past two days.

Saturday, 9 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 9 to 15 April --

-- Temperatures will average near normal values. There will be a slight warming trend. It is rather uncertain as to how long the warmer temperatures will then last with some regions holding on into the Easter weekend.

-- Rainfalls will be about 10-15 mm which is near normal or slightly below.

-- Sunshine will average about 3-4 hours a day which is a shade below normal.

-- Winds fairly light at first, moderate southeast at times, then back to a rather light regime later.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out bright and quite cold, as temperatures have reached -3 C at several locations in the midlands. As cloud slowly spreads in the sunshine will dim and some "virga" may be seen by afternoon, (virga is rain evaporating as it falls into dry air). Any measurable amounts of rain would likely be close to the western coastlines. It should be fully overcast in most areas by evening with perhaps a few breaks in the northeast. Highs 8 to 10 C.

TONIGHT will be cloudy but mainly dry, light rain possibly spreading further inland from the west coast at times. Lows near 2 C in the northeast to around 7 C in west Munster.

SUNDAY the light rain will continue to make quite slow progress east and some parts of Leinster and Ulster could have a generally dry day. Highs may be held down to 8-11 C by the cloud and cool southeast breeze (30-50 km/hr) but a few parts of the inland central-western region could reach 13 C.

MONDAY will see more organized rain pushing in from the south, 10-15 mm likely in many areas. Lows near 8 C and highs near 13 C.

TUESDAY the rain will gradually push further north, ending as showers then with partial clearing in some southern counties, warmer there. Highs staying around 13 C north, to 15-17 C south.

From WEDNESDAY into the EASTER WEEKEND higher pressure should prevail and bring dry weather, at least some sunshine each day, and pleasant temperatures in the 14-17 C range. There are some signs that the high will strengthen to the north and allow that colder east wind I was mentioning as a possible outcome, and that could bring temperatures down slightly by the actual weekend, although maybe only in the southeast as a sort of minor extension of more significant cooling that reaches England and Wales. It could be that the temperatures will stay at the earlier levels in most parts of the west, central and northern regions. Also, the cooling trend may be fairly weak this far west. (would expect 8-11 C in Britain and maybe 11-13 C in any parts of Ireland that the cooler easterly breeze reaches).

My local weather on Friday started out sunny after some brief showers, temperatures were near 12 C for a few hours, then a second cold front arrived and dropped the readings to 7 C with a strong westerly wind raising dust -- in towns and on the highways, they have made the usual effort to sweep up the winter grit (which tends to be considerable) but they don't get all of it, some lies around off the roads then that gets blown around until spring rains and the growing season end the process. Also there seems to be an unusual amount of dry leaf matter around perhaps because of the heat wave and drought we had last summer, so not all of that has been collected and so it has looked a bit more like November than April outside on Friday. Rather odd to live somewhere that a ten minute drive in one direction takes you to full-on spring and a ten minute drive the other way gets you to sustained deep winter.

Sunday, 10 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 10 to 16 April --

-- Temperatures will average near normal to 1 deg above normal.

-- Rainfalls will amount to 25-50 per cent of normal.

-- Sunshine will be about 75 per cent of normal values.

-- Moderate southeast to south winds sometimes falling off to light wind speeds.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather cloudy with occasional light rain developing near Atlantic coasts, staying dry in many other places. Highs 10 to 13 C. Moderate southeast winds 30-50 km/hr, 50-70 km/hr near exposed coasts.

TONIGHT will be overcast with the light rain becoming intermittent, except near the south coast. Lows 7-9 C.

MONDAY will see an outbreak of heavier rain (10-15 mm) in Munster spreading north during the day. Not as wet near east coast however. Highs 13 to 15 C, moderate southeast to south winds.

TUESDAY will bring variable amounts of cloud, showers heavy at times in the north and west, a few sunny breaks too, lows near 9 C and highs near 15 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, lows near 6 C and highs near 15 C.

THURSDAY will be cloudy in the west with a risk of rain near Atlantic coasts, partly cloudy further east. Lows 4-7 C and highs 13-16 C.

The EASTER WEEKEND still looks quite pleasant with high pressure in control, highs 13 to 17 C, and nights cool but morning warming rapidly so that only earliest risers will be aware of briefly cold overnight lows.

Cold air is expected to try to push south into Britain by Monday and some of that could reach parts of eastern Ireland, but western regions will likely not feel the cooldown, before all regions turn cloudy with rain at times later in the week.

My local weather on Saturday was a bit of a shocker for this date, as heavy showers of snow pellets blew through at times, dropping temperatures to near 1 deg C from an already cool 5-7 C range under otherwise partly cloudy skies.

Monday, 11 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain similar ... 10-20 mm rainfalls likely over next two days, closest to normal in west Munster ... temperatures 1-2 deg above average ... rather cloudy, and winds not overly strong.

    FORECASTS

TODAY rain will continue to edge further east as it moves steadily north towards Connacht, with somewhat drier conditions to follow in the south by afternoon and evening. Rainfalls 5-15 mm. Highs 13-15 C with winds southeast 30-50 km/hr.

TONIGHT mostly cloudy with a few showers, heavier rain by morning in some parts of Munster. Lows 7-9 C.

TUESDAY will see another outbreak of heavy showers, this time somewhat more widespread although quite variable amounts likely due to the localized nature of this activity (5-20 mm the likely range). Highs 14-16 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy with only a few isolated remnant showers, lows near 7 C and highs 14-16 C.

THURSDAY will bring another showery interval although this front looks rather weak and amounts could be just 2-5 mm in some areas. Lows 7-10 C and highs 14-17 C.

FRIDAY and SATURDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny (some other guidance is showing unsettled possibilities), lows near 6 C and highs near 18 C.

EASTER SUNDAY now looking pleasant at first but with increasing risk of showers and gusty winds later, as fronts have sped up on latest guidance. Lows near 10 C and highs 15-19 C, temperatures falling later on though.

The week after Easter is now looking quite chilly and could turn unseasonably cold for a few days but this guidance is only medium confidence at this point so far in advance.

My local weather on Sunday was very cold even for this elevation, with snow at times and highs barely reaching 1-2 C. A winter storm warning is posted for a large part of the northwestern U.S. but should mostly miss us to the south on Monday, however a bit more snow seems likely for us as we get even deeper into an arctic air mass now concentrated over the prairies. This storm will bring heavy snow to the northern plains states into Tuesday and then will weaken but move northeast; further cold patterns are predicted for much of North America in coming days.

Tuesday, 12 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 12 to 18 April --

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 3 deg above normal, despite a colder than average end to this interval.

-- Rainfalls will gradually total near normal values.

-- Sunshine will amount to near 75 per cent of normal.

-- Winds generally moderate southerly veering more west to northwest late in the period.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy although some parts of north Leinster and Ulster could see some early bright intervals. Rain will spread into the southeast coastal counties, heaviest around late morning and early afternoon, with 10-15 mm expected in south Leinster and some parts of east Munster. This rain will diminish as it moves further north later in the day to 5-10 mm. There may be some embedded thunderstorms with this. Highs 14 to 16 C.

TONIGHT remnant light rain or drizzle for a time, then foggy or misty, with some clearing. Lows 7 to 10 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy and rather warm with highs 15 to 18 C.

THURSDAY will become cloudy, with sporadic light rain in western counties. Lows near 10 C and highs 14 to 17 C.

FRIDAY will be sunny with highs near 19 C.

SATURDAY will bring increasing cloud, some rain by late in the day in western counties, highs near 19 C.

EASTER SUNDAY will turn cooler with showers, locally heavy. Highs near 15 C.

The following week looks cool and unsettled with frequent rain or showers and highs only around 12-14 C. Even colder conditions are possible with an arctic air mass poised to drop south late in the month.

My local weather remained very cool on Monday with a few light flurries, highs near 2 C. Heavier snow is falling across parts of the northwest U.S. as a strong storm system gets organized over Wyoming. This will bring a heavy snowstorm to the northern plains states and eastern prairies of Canada.

Wednesday, 13 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 13 to 19 April, 2022 --

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 3 deg above normal values, with somewhat cooler temperatures near the end of the interval.

-- Rainfalls will likely add up to around 75 per cent of normal values on average.

-- Sunshine will be held down to around 50-75 per cent of normal as it looks increasingly cloudy for the weekend now.

-- Winds generally rather slack will sometimes reach moderate speeds around Sunday and Monday.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with some afternoon sunny breaks. Any further light rain or showers will be confined to Ulster but there could be locally heavier showers there by afternoon. Many other places will remain dry or see just very brief light rainfalls. Highs 14 to 16 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast and humid with occasional light rain in the west after midnight. Lows 8 to 12 C.

THURSDAY will be cloudy and mild with some occasional light rain in western and sometimes central counties, possibly not reaching the east coast in more than trace amounts. Highs 14 to 16 C.

FRIDAY will have some sunny breaks and isolated showers are now possible, lows near 10 C and highs 15 to 18 C.

SATURDAY will become cloudy with some brighter spells in Leinster and east Ulster. Some rain is now expected to move into western counties around mid-day. It could remain rather foggy with low cloud prevailing near the south coast. Lows near 12 C and highs 14 to 17 C, best values in the inland southeast.

EASTER SUNDAY will have some pleasant intervals as the Saturday rain dries up gradually during the early morning hours. Another more organized area of showers will arrive in the west by afternoon and move into central counties by evening, so a good part of the day could be dry in some eastern counties. Lows near 13 C and highs near 17 C.

MONDAY will be mostly cloudy with frequent showers, and somewhat cooler. Lows near 8 C and highs near 14 C.

The rest of the week seems likely to remain moderately cool and somewhat unsettled with colder air threatening still although some uncertainty on its timing or how strong a cooling event will be seen (towards end of April).

My local weather remained very cold, with cloudy skies, temperatures barely reaching zero Celsius, and a keen northeast wind. A very intense storm system is moving into the northern plains states with a large severe storm outbreak from Iowa to Texas earlier, numerous reports of large hail and tornadoes. In the Dakotas and southern Manitoba, blizzard conditions are developing with 30-40 cm snowfalls predicted. There were also reports of hail and snow near the west coast from a weaker storm moving through western Washington state.

Thursday, 14 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain similar to what was discussed yesterday -- rather warm but turning cooler after Sunday, frequent showers in west and north, somewhat lesser amounts of rain in the east, a lot of cloud in the mix.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy and rather humid with outbreaks of rain near Atlantic coasts, making gradual progress eastward. Some eastern counties could have a largely dry day with a few brighter intervals amidst the cloud. Highs 14 to 16 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast with light rain at times, lows near 12 C.

FRIDAY will be cloudy with afternoon sunny breaks developing, continued rather warm and humid. Outbreaks of rain will continue east during the morning and will begin to shift further north by afternoon. Highs 15 to 18 C.

SATURDAY may remain largely dry in the east, as another slow-moving band of rain heads slowly into western coastal counties. The south coast is likely to have widespread mist or low cloud with occasional drizzle. Further east, partly cloudy to overcast, still rather warm. Lows near 12 C and highs 15 to 18 C, warmer inland central and eastern counties.

EASTER SUNDAY will bring variable amounts of cloud and showers, some heavy with hail and thunder possible. Turning somewhat cooler, lows again near 12 C but highs only 14 to 16 C (and possibly lower in Connacht and west Ulster).

MONDAY will be breezy to windy especially near the northwest coasts, and there will be passing showers, winds west to northwest 50-80 km/hr, lows near 9 C and highs near 13 C.

By TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY, a cooler flow from the east may arrive and drop temperatures another degree or so, skies will remain mostly cloudy with some outbreaks of light rain. Highs near 11 C.

The easterly flow appears likely to persist but it will begin to turn warmer as further east the source will become the Balkans in southeast winds so temperatures may tend to come back up to this week's levels eventually.

My local weather on Tuesday turned sunny and that allowed temperatures to recover slightly, with a high near 7 C (still quite chilly though). Clear and well below freezing at this time. The blizzard and severe storms continue moving slowly in central regions of North America.

Very unsettling news about a missile strike on the Russian cruiser "Moskva" in the Black Sea and apparently this happened during very stormy weather with a low and strong winds over the east-central portions of the Black Sea overnight (it has been daylight there for several hours now). The weather there will improve steadily later today. I say "unsettling" because this entire business seems capable of escalating into something even more widespread and far worse. This seems like the time to go on an extensive hiking trip through Patagonia or maybe see if the Mars colony has a vacancy. Will be with you to the end or even next week.

Friday, 15 April, 2022 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 15 to 21 April --

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal.

-- Rainfalls will average about 75 per cent of normal.

-- Sunshine will average only 50-75 per cent of normal.

-- Winds generally moderate south to southwest, sometimes falling to lighter wind speeds.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather cloudy at first with a few showers mainly over western counties. Some improvement will set in around mid-day with longer sunny intervals likely by afternoon. Rather warm with highs 16 to 18 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy east, overcast west, with drizzle or fog near the south coast at times. Light rain by morning along parts of the west coast. Lows 10 to 13 C.

SATURDAY will bring a few intervals of rain in western counties, and low cloud, mist or fog near the south coast. Brighter and generally dry weather is expected further east and in parts of Ulster. Still rather warm, highs 15 to 18 C.

EASTER SUNDAY will be cloudy with a few breaks, and passing showers sometimes heavy with a risk of thunder. Somewhat cooler with morning lows around 11 C and afternoon highs 13 to 15 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy, breezy with showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 13 C.

TUESDAY will also be rather cool, with occasional light rain or showers, lows near 7 C and highs near 13 C.

A rather bland pattern with weak frontal systems and light winds will follow, with temperatures near seasonal average (highs 13-15 C). There will be somewhat colder air lurking just to the north by the weekend following (23rd-24th) and that could arrive at some point around the start of the week of 25th to 29th. Temperatures may only fall slightly at that time, with highs around 10-12 C.

My local weather on Thursday was sunny with afternoon clouds and highs of about 10 C. The moon is quite bright here now as it approaches full phase on the 16th.

Saturday, 16 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS: After a warm day today, the temperatures will trend slightly below normal values for the following week. Rainfalls, heaviest Sunday and Monday, will likely amount to half to two-thirds of normal. Sunshine may be slightly below average too. Winds generally moderate turning more westerly after today's southerly breezes.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy and warm, except for some south coast locations with persistent low cloud, fog and mist. Western coastal areas will become cloudier first, with some outbreaks of light rain at times by afternoon and evening. It should hold mainly dry elsewhere. Highs 16 to 19 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast with rain moving slowly into central counties, reaching the east coast towards daybreak. Lows 8 to 12 C.

EASTER SUNDAY will be cloudy with a few brighter intervals, and showers or intervals of rain, some heavier showers possibly giving a bit of hail and thunder. Highs 13 to 15 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast and rather cool with passing showers, lows 7-9 C and highs 12-14 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few showers, cool, with lows near 6 C and highs near 13 C.

WEDNESDAY will see some improvements to partly cloudy skies and only isolated showers, highs near 14 C.

After that, a rather cloudy east to southeast flow develops, with temperatures near seasonal averages, some rain may be associated but only of a scattered showery nature.

My local weather on Friday was partly cloudy to overcast and cool with a few snowflakes during the afternoon. Highs near 7 C before the thicker cloud dropped us a few degrees. We are due to stay in this rather chilly pattern for another week, it appears.

    Happy Easter to all.

Sunday, 17 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 17 to 23 April --

-- Temperatures will average near normal values.

-- Rainfall will amount to near normal too, except that much of it will fall today and tomorrow, with small amounts added on from time to time.

-- Sunshine will probably run below average by at least 25% and possibly as much as 50%.

-- Winds generally moderate southwest to west at first, then backing around to moderate southeast to east later in the interval.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with heavy showers and risk of a thunderstorm with hail in some places. Highs 13-15 C. Total rainfalls 15-30 mm, about 5 to 10 mm has already fallen in many areas.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with a few breaks, and occasional light rain. Lows near 7 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with frequent showers or intervals of light rain, highs near 13 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy with showers more isolated, lows near 6 C and highs near 12 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy in the east, overcast in the west where some light rain may develop near the Atlantic coast. Lows near 4 C and highs near 14 C.

THURSDAY to SATURDAY winds will become southeast to east 30-50 km/hr, and while some areas will have mostly dry weather, there will likely be a few outbreaks of light to moderate rain in west Munster and sometimes the midlands and Connacht will be included. Rather cloudy in all areas but with some sunny breaks and near normal temperatures, highs 13-15 C, overnight lows 5-8 C.

This easterly flow may become more unsettled towards Monday 25th with temperatures possibly falling off slightly, then a more variable pattern will develop, in which the wind flow will gradually return to the westerly direction, and new threats of colder air from the north may materialize, but details are sketchy at this point.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast and chilly with highs near 5 C.

Monday, 18 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 18-24 April --

-- Temperatures will average near normal, rather cool at first, somewhat warmer later on.

-- Rainfalls will average 25-50 per cent of normal but there will be frequent light showers so it may seem like more.

-- Sunshine will amount to 50-75 per cent of average, a few days will be bright but most rather cloudy.

-- Winds generally rather light to moderate and eventually turning southeast to east in direction.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with some brighter intervals. Scattered showers generally not as heavy as yesterday but in some isolated areas could become heavy with thunder and hail possible. Inland western counties seem most at risk. Highs 12-14 C.

TONIGHT will have a mixture of cloud and clear intervals, lows 3-5 C. Some further light rain in western counties though.

TUESDAY will bring a few showers most widespread in western counties, otherwise partly cloudy to overcast skies, and rather cool, highs 11-13 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny with any remnant showers quite brief and isolated. Lows 2-5 C and highs 13-16 C.

THURSDAY to SUNDAY, a southeast to east wind sets in, temperatures generally around the average for late April, with highs 13-16 C, and nights partly cloudy so frost unlikely with lows 4-7 C on average. Some showers may develop and Munster into south Connacht seems more at risk than elsewhere, but even there not a lot of rain is expected in this interval. Daytime skies will vary from partly cloudy to a full overcast at times. Winds southeast 30-50 km/hr.

The latest guidance looks a bit warmer for the following week (confidence rather low however).

My local weather on Easter Sunday was cloudy and cold with a few snow flurries and highs only around 5 C. Spring at our elevation is only a rumour so far, despite some progress in the valley.

Tuesday, 19 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS _ A fairly dry week ahead with near average temperatures and improving prospects for sunshine into next week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy after a fairly bright start to the day, and some isolated showers will likely develop, with some intervals of light rain likely in western counties. Highs 10 to 12 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to clear, although with more cloud towards the west coast. Lows 2-6 C but some chance of scattered light frosts inland.

WEDNESDAY will be sunny to partly cloudy in most regions, somewhat cloudier towards the west, with isolated showers. Highs 13-15 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with moderate southeast winds, isolated showers could develop in parts of the inland south. Lows around 4 C and highs around 14 C.

FRIDAY to SUNDAY the southeast flow will continue, becoming somewhat cloudier with more widespread showers developing, although rainfall amounts may be fairly small in most cases. Highs around 14-16 C and lows 5-8 C.

NEXT WEEK looks fairly pleasant now, with just a weak northerly push trying to displace the easterly flow, as the two regimes blend with their weak frontal boundaries, a lot of places will remain dry with skies varying from partly cloudy to sunny. Highs should remain in the range of 13-16 C. Some slight frosts could develop well inland.

My local weather on Monday was overcast with sleety showers at times, highs near 6 C. A rather unseasonable "nor'easter" has developed off the U.S. northeast coast bringing cold rain in coastal regions and snow inland at least over higher terrain. A secondary low over the Great Lakes is not very active and has sleety mixed precipitation surrounding it. This entire complex will drift off to the northeast then start to circulate back to the south and west over the next week or ten days as blocking develops over the Atlantic.

Wednesday, 20 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 20 to 26 April --

-- Temperatures will average near normal values.

-- Rainfall will average 10 to 25 per cent of normal, some places in the north and east could remain dry.

-- Sunshine will be near average for this time of year (which is now up to about 5 hours a day).

-- Winds generally light to moderate, turning to an east-southeast direction after today.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly sunny with some afternoon cloud in the eastern counties, partly cloudy to overcast further west, with outbreaks of light rain near Atlantic coasts by afternoon and evening. Highs 13-15 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy with a gradual clearing trend in cloudier western regions, as the light rain backs away to the southwest. Dry elsewhere. Lows 3 to 7 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers developing across parts of west Munster. Moderate east-southeast winds 30-50 km/hr. Highs around 14 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, lows near 5 C and highs near 15 C.

On the WEEKEND, similar conditions although perhaps a bit more cloud especially on Saturday in southern regions, leading to a bit more widespread shower activity although amounts generally light (2-5 mm). Highs both days around 14 C. Winds may be a bit stronger too especially near coasts, southeast to east 40-60 km/hr.

NEXT WEEK the pattern changes very little but the wind gradient relaxes to the point where breezes may be mostly determined by weak sea breezes or localized troughs. This may allow daytime highs to rise gradually into the 15-18 C range. Nights will remain rather cool as skies will tend to clear out from anytime daytime cloud that builds up, but that won't amount to more than a partly cloudy daytime sky and there may be quite a bit of sunshine in some areas. The first part of May is looking even warmer perhaps flirting with 20 C.

My local weather has been exceptionally cold for about a week and on Tuesday it actually got a bit colder still, with passing hail and snow pellet showers, despite some brief sunny breaks, temperatures were held down to the 5-7 C range and sometimes fell lower in the heavier showers. Hard to believe that it can be 15-20 C at this time of year in these parts. Snow is holding on without much effort at higher elevations (it is mostly bare up to around 1200 metres then the hilltops and more distant peaks are a dazzling white, would be scenic with clearer skies).

Thursday, 21 April, 2022 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain similar, mostly dry away from the southwest which will get slight amounts of rain for several days, rather cloudy at times, moderate southeast to east winds and temperatures close to seasonal averages.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with some brighter intervals, those more frequent in Leinster and Ulster. Some continuing light rain or showers in parts of west Munster, with that activity dying out but more showers possible again in the afternoon. Highs 13-15 C. Southeast breezes 30-50 km/hr.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy with lows 4-7 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with isolated showers near the south coast mainly, highs 13-15 C, winds east-southeast 40-60 km/hr.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast, with slightly more widespread light showers in southern and central counties, winds east 40-60 km/hr, and lows near 7 C, highs near 14 C.

SUNDAY will continue similar with partly cloudy skies, isolated showers, winds east to northeast 30-50 km/hr, lows near 5 C and highs near 13 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy with perhaps more sunshine than previous days, lows near 4 C and highs near 14 C.

This rather bland weather pattern could continue most of next week. The one thing that has changed in recent guidance is that a colder interval sets in just after the new month begins (around Sunday 1st of May). Confidence in this time range is quite low however.

My local weather on Wednesday was partly cloudy, although overcast by evening with a few spits of rain. Temperatures are up slightly to around 8 C.

Friday, 22 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 22 to 28 April --

-- Temperatures will average near normal, perhaps 0.5 to 1.0 below average in some eastern and southern counties.

-- Rainfall will average 10 to 25 per cent of normal, least amounts in the north.

-- Sunshine will average near normal in some areas but there will be considerable cloud across the south at times.

-- Winds generally moderate easterly will slacken to light northeast then variable as the week progresses.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy and sometimes fully overcast in the south, with isolated outbreaks of light rain there. Winds east-southeast 40-60 km/hr will be rather brisk at times in Leinster and east Ulster. Highs 13-15 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy with some clear intervals, lows 4-7 C.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY will be similar with partly cloudy skies in most areas, sometimes more overcast in the south, and further outbreaks of light rain giving slight amounts of 1-2 mm in a few places. Highs both days 14-16 C and Sunday morning's lows around 4-7 C. Winds east-northeast at 40-60 km/hr brisk at times in eastern counties.

MONDAY will be less breezy and there may be a more variable cloud cover that, due to this slack wind gradient, will remain in place in some parts of the country, giving rise to local showers. Lows 2-6 C and highs 12-16 C. Cool sea breezes are indicated for Leinster with 8-10 C temperatures over the Irish Sea possibly giving rise to sea fog that may come inland at times.

TUESDAY to FRIDAY of next week will remain similar to the above with the less breezy regime still giving light northeast breezes much of the time although more of a tendency for local sea breeze regimes to set up around all coastlines. Overnight lows generally rather chilly with slight frosts possible inland. Lows 2-6 C. Highs mainly in the 11-14 C range with a few places towards the west coast perhaps a bit warmer.

This regime breaks down rather slowly around the end of the month and the next phase may be a briefly cold northerly incursion although quite often when these show up at that time range, they end up happening further east with a faster warmup than the maps now might indicate.

My local weather on Thursday started out with a morning of steady wet snow leaving a 1-2 cm coating that disappeared quickly once skies brightened somewhat in the afternoon. It stayed rather cold despite that with highs near 7 C. Looking forward to any slight improvement even if only from higher sun angles in the same pattern.

Saturday, 23 April, 2022 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS _ The next week will be dry and bright with perhaps 25-50 per cent more sunshine than normal. Temperatures will be fairly close to average with perhaps a larger range from daytime highs to overnight lows. Winds slackening to just light east to southeast and eventually southerly. Any rainfall would be very isolated and amounts small, most places will remain entirely dry.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with a few clouds. There could be patchy low cloud at times over the Irish Sea and south coast, if this moved inland it would probably soon break up in the dry heated air over land, but it could produce a bit of drizzle in a few locations near the coasts. Winds east to northeast 30-50 km/hr. Highs 13-17 C, warmest inland west.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to clear with lows 2-6 C, some chance of light frosts well inland.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny with a slight chance of a brief shower inland south. Winds east to northeast 30-50 km/hr. Highs 13-17 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny with lows 2-6 C and highs 12-16 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy with perhaps a slightly higher chance of isolated showers, lows 3-7 C and highs 13-15 C.

From WEDNESDAY to next weekend (30 Apr - 1st May) the weather should stay dry, partly cloudy to sunny, and could warm up slightly as winds turn to the southeast then south (light winds however, and localized sea breezes likely each day). Highs in the 14-19 C range, highest in the midlands and eventually towards the east coast as the sea breeze weakens there. Some much colder intervals are suggested in the latest guidance for early May, but this has been coming and going on recent model runs, same caveat as usual applies at this time range.

My local weather is really quite depressing, as we had a few snow pellet, ice pellet and cold rain showers all vying for attention at different times, odd projectiles hitting windows and bouncing high in the air off the sidewalks. Impressive but would rather have this in mid-winter where it belongs. The high may have been 7-9 C between these showers as they tend to force cold downdrafts after travelling into our region from higher snow-covered terrain to our northwest. I think I'd prefer your nice stretch of weather to any of the above.

Sunday, 24 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS -- Dry, quite often sunny with temperatures close to seasonal normals; winds generally moderate easterly dropping off to light and variable later in the week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals, those most frequent in southern counties and especially near the south coast. Isolated showers could develop in that cloud, but almost all locations will remain dry. Highs 13-16 C, warmest inland west and midlands. Winds east-northeast 30-50 km/hr.

TONIGHT partly cloudy to clear, lows 2 to 6 C.

MONDAY will bring a mixture of cloud and sunshine, local sea breeze cooling can be expected especially in Leinster and east Ulster, highs 12-15 C. Cannot rule out an isolated shower in one or two spots.

TUESDAY will be cloudy with a few brighter intervals. A weak disturbance could produce somewhat more widespread shower activity but amounts generally under 3 mm. Quite a few places will likely avoid these showers and remain dry. Lows 2-6 C and highs 13-16 C.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY will see slack wind gradients with high pressure overhead rather than off to the north, which will mean that only local sea breezes will provide much air movement, inland it should be relatively warm with partly cloudy to sunny skies, highs 15-18 C, some coasts could remain 12-15 C. Nights rather chilly under mostly clear skies with lows 1 to 5 C. Slight frosts are possible in the midlands.

NEXT WEEKEND (30 April and 1st of May) will be similar but with a bit of a southerly breeze and perhaps more cloud than previous days. Highs still in the same range of 15-18 C, nights 4-8 C.

There are indications of a brief colder spell around 2-4 May, northerly winds setting in and highs 10-14 C, then back to seasonable warmth later in the week around 5-8 May.

My local weather thankfully warmed up a bit under partly cloudy skies, with highs near 14 C. There were dramatic black clouds with hail shafts visible near the southern horizon but that activity was drifting slowly away from us towards Spokane, WA.

Monday, 25 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 25 Apr to1 May --

-- Temperatures will average about 0.5 to 1.0 deg below normal values.

-- Rather dry, 10 to 25 per cent of normal rainfall likely.

-- Sunshine will be close to average in some parts but 25-50 per cent above normal for others. Midlands and west should do best.

-- Winds dropping off to very light for several days, flow slightly easterly now will eventually turn to southerly.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy, perhaps more extensive cloud decks will be found near west Munster coastlines and in east Ulster, with a slightly higher chance of light showers there as a result. In between, a sunnier and dry outlook. Highs 12 to 15 C, coolest near Irish Sea coasts. Winds rather moderate and governed mostly by local sea breezes.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy with lows 3-6 C, slight risk of frosts in any midlands locales that remain clear.

TUESDAY will probably see more extensive cloud than most recent days, with a few light showers likely. Even so, it will stay largely dry. Highs 12 to 15 C with local sea breezes developing, in a moderate easterly wind flow.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY will have even less wind gradient and any breezes will probably be caused by the sea breeze process operating now on all coasts. Lows 2-5 C and highs 13-17 C (possibly a bit warmer in some inland sheltered valley locations).

NEXT WEEKEND could turn a bit cloudier with light rain approaching from the west or northwest, may not amount to very much in terms of accumulations (3-5 mm potential). Highs 14-18 C.

This bland weather pattern will try to hold on through the following week early in May, with much colder air indicated to be moving south and trying to change the pattern. It may take a second effort to get to that result, around Friday 6th into the second week of May, at which time it could turn considerably cooler in northerly winds.

My local weather was pleasant with sunshine and highs near 16 C.

Tuesday, 26 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS _ Until around the 2nd or 3rd of May, expect this rather cool and dry weather pattern to continue with variable amounts of cloud and rather light winds. There is a chance of a small amount of rainfall by Saturday from a very weak disturbance then a few more dry days until it turns cooler during the first week of May.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with some sunny breaks, where the day does start out bright clouds will likely increase around late morning. One or two very isolated showers could develop. Local sea breezes will govern the light wind pattern with an overall east to northeast drift to the inland breezes. Highs 12 to 15 C, warmest inland west and central counties.

TONIGHT will see clearing skies and local slight frosts are possible with lows -1 to +3 C.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY will all be quite similar days under the core of the high pressure area which has been located further north promoting the easterly winds, but will now be more or less overhead. This may lead to longer sunny intervals again, but some cloud is likely to linger especially near coasts. Very slack wind gradients will mean that any sunny daytime conditions will feel quite warm even though highs will be near late April averages (13-16 C). Nights will be cool and subject to slight frosts with lows generally -1 to +4 C.

SATURDAY will become rather cloudy and a weak disturbance drifting in from the northwest will bring small amounts of rain (2-5 mm possible) to some areas, in particular Ulster and the north midlands. This will become more showery as it moves further south and dissipates overnight. Highs 12-15 C.

SUNDAY and MONDAY (1st-2nd of May) will become mostly sunny and a bit warmer with highs 15-19 C.

Around TUESDAY 3rd of May, somewhat colder in stages, cloudy with a few showers, highs 12-15 C.

Even cooler air is poised to drop south during the following week to ten days, and it should be noted that wintry conditions will return to some higher parts of Scotland and much of Scandinavia so the air mass is quite chilly by May standards. Highs could be in the range of 9 to 13 C on some days in Ireland.

My local weather on Monday was overcast but still pleasantly mild at around 13 C. We seem to have shaken off the very chilly pattern for the time being as wintry weather shifted more into central Canada recently. They have a nasty situation in Manitoba with flooding from previous rain and snowmelt but temperatures then dropped to the -5 to -10 C range when the floodwaters were rising, and rain changed to sleet and snow. That gives way to dry and milder conditions west of about Brandon all the way to central B.C. ... the same storm has an active cold front bringing severe storms to parts of the eastern U.S. where temperatures have briefly spiked into the 25-30 C range but will be coming back down to the 10-15 C range soon.

Wednesday, 27 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 27 April to 3 May 2022 --

-- Temperatures will be close to seasonal normal values.

-- Rainfall will be rather slight, and mainly confined to northern counties on Saturday, 10 to 25 per cent of normal in total.

-- Sunshine will work out near normal although it may vary considerably from one region to another.

-- Light winds will prevail, one result being that weather will set up in these somewhat different regimes and change will be slow to occur.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to sunny, with light sea breezes near coasts. Highs 13 to 16 C.

TONIGHT will be clear at times and chilly, lows -1 to +3 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue dry and cool with partly cloudy skies, highs 13 to 16 C both days, morning lows around -1 to +3 C.

SATURDAY some light rain is expected to move in during the morning across Ulster and parts of Connacht. It will tend to fragment to showers as it makes slow progress towards the south. Lows near 8 C and highs near 13 C.

SUNDAY there will still be some cloud around from the weak disturbance and a few scattered showers, but increasingly bright by afternoon. Lows near 8 C and highs near 16 C.

MONDAY to about WEDNESDAY will continue rather bland and dry with highs 17-20 C.

The colder air is still making an appearance on guidance charts but some of the guidance is a bit slower now, so that the drop in temperature may take several days to materialize in full. Eventually, by the week of 8 to 14 May, some colder temperatures seem likely in a north to northeast wind flow. There may be a slight upturn in rainfall with this regime, especially if the cold air has trouble pushing very far south as that might create some more potential for frontal rainfall bands to develop.

My local weather on Tuesday was cloudy with passing showers that contained some soft hail despite fairly mild temperatures of about 12 C. This disturbance has moved into Alberta ending a dry spell there with showers and thunderstorms breaking out. Eastern regions of North America have turned a lot colder and there could even be coatings of snow on hills in New England and upstate New York. Along the coast it's more of a cold showery regime with highs of 9-12 C.

Thursday, 28 April, 2022 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain similar to yesterday's report. Rather dry, temperatures near average, partly cloudy skies most days, overcast with light rain Saturday in some parts of the north however. Winds generally light.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with light winds, local seabreezes cooling coastlines, highs 13-16 C.

TONIGHT will be hazy but mostly clear with patchy high cloud, lows -1 to +3 C, slight frosts possible well inland.

FRIDAY will bring increasing cloudiness and perhaps a touch warmer away from south coast, highs 15-19 C (12-15 C south coast where low cloud may prevent much sunshine).

SATURDAY intervals of light rain will develop across parts of Ulster and the north midlands, spreading as showers somewhat further south with amounts only 2-5 mm expected, possibly 5-10 mm in hilly parts of Ulster. Lows 6-9 C and highs 13-15 C coolest in northern counties.

SUNDAY will become partly cloudy with any remnant showers dying out around early afternoon. Lows 6-9 C and highs 14-18 C.

MONDAY to about WEDNESDAY still expecting this dry spell to continue with variable amounts of cloud and highs 15-19 C. It seems likely to turn somewhat cooler especially across the northern half of the country around the later portions of next week, highs dropping back to around 12-14 C, but also there will be more chance of rain and that could also keep temperatures down including parts of the south if the rain is persistent enough.

My local weather on Wednesday was partly cloudy but essentially dry with showers over higher terrain mostly, cool with highs about 10 C. Late stages of April, but no local signs of real spring yet, trees are just showing faint signs of budding. We have the usual "early" spring flowers that most people see in March in this region.

Friday, 29 April, 2022 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain similar to previous report.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny to partly cloudy with increasing cloud across northern regions by late afternoon. Highs 16 to 19 C.

TONIGHT will become cloudy, with outbreaks of light rain (2-5 mm) across parts of north Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster. Partly to mostly cloudy but staying dry further south. Lows 7-9 C.

SATURDAY some further light rain will continue across the north, where it will be rather misty and humid, highs 14-16 C. The south will remain partly to mostly cloudy with some showers possible, highs 15-18 C. There will be only slight amounts of rain with east Ulster possibly seeing 5-10 mm.

SUNDAY will be cloudy with afternoon sunny breaks, a few remnant showers especially during the morning. Lows 7-10 C and highs 15-18 C.

MONDAY to about THURSDAY of next week should remain settled, partly cloudy with slight chances of light rain in Ulster. Highs 15-19 C. Around Friday there may be a slightly colder regime pushing into at least northern if not all regions, but this will push south more effectively over Britain and the North Sea to bring a cold spell to central Europe. Ireland looks to be more likely to turn unsettled with temperatures not too far from seasonal averages. Eventually a more sustained push of this colder air may include Ireland as it seems likely to dominate much of continental Europe for parts of May.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with highs near 12 C.

Saturday, 30 April, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 30 April to 6 May 2022 --

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal values.

-- Rainfall will average 50 per cent of normal, rather showery on a few days with dry days in the mix.

-- Sunshine will probably struggle to reach normal amounts but may just about get there later in the interval.

-- Not very windy most of the time.

    FORECASTS

TODAY some light rain has spread across many areas overnight but is just patchy and drizzly in much of the central and southern regions, heavier or more persistent rain is likely at times across Ulster, and the north midlands. Amounts will vary from 2-5 mm south to 5-10 mm north. Rather misty or even foggy in some of the higher parts of the north; the overcast may yield a few brief brighter intervals in the inland south. Highs 12-15 C in the north and 14-17 C in the south.

TONIGHT will continue rather overcast with occasional light rain or drizzle, lows 7 to 10 C.

SUNDAY will be partly to mostly cloudy, with the main focus of the surviving rainfall over Leinster in the form of showers that may be persistent in a few places, with 5-10 mm potential there, some gradual and partial clearing later in the day for some western and northern counties. Highs 14 to 18 C.

MONDAY will have some isolated showers too but most places should have a fairly dry and at times bright day with lows 5-8 C, highs 13-17 C.

TUESDAY will be more cloudy with scattered showers developing, lows near 7 C and highs near 17 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy with perhaps longer sunny intervals, lows near 6 C and highs near 19 C.

THURSDAY looks partly cloudy with occasional showers developing, lows near 8 C and highs near 18 C.

This fairly decent weather may continue for a while as earlier indications of a cold northerly seem to have shifted further east taking a deeper shot of cold air well south over central Europe but avoiding Britain and Ireland now. So that may mean just a slow breakdown of the relatively dry and settled regime towards a more active Atlantic-driven unsettled period. There could be some more substantial rains by about the middle of May.

My local weather on Friday was partly cloudy to overcast with highs near 12 C. The weather has been so cold here that this actually seems mild now, although it it still below our seasonal average which is closer to 16 C at our elevation, 20 C down in the nearby valleys. Snow is very gradually becoming patchy on local hills and has more or less gone from our elevation.

Sunday, 1 May, 2022 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain same as yesterday's report adjusted for the fact that some rain fell so that now the projection is for 25-50 per cent of normal rainfall rest of the week of 1-7 May. Rather warm and near average sunshine.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with a gradual but only partial clearing trend from the northwest by afternoon. Some heavier rain has now moved through the southeast, another round will begin over Leinster this morning, but hopefully the heaviest rain could stay out over the Irish Sea leaving scattered showers on land, 2-5 mm further expected but potential for 5-10 mm in a few locations. Highs 14-16 C although it could reach somewhat higher values in a few parts of Connacht with early enough sunshine there.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy, misty or foggy in places, and there could be one or two remnant showers, lows 7-10 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers but many places likely to stay dry. Highs 17-19 C.

TUESDAY will bring increasing cloud and outbreaks of light rain or showers, rather humid, lows 7-9 C and highs 14-16 C.

WEDNESDAY to the following weekend (7-8 May) looking fairly settled and rather warm with highs 16-19 C, perhaps one or two places reaching 20 C. Nights will be reasonably mild (4-8 C on average). That colder air we were tracking continues to show signs of diving rapidly southeast into the Baltic and east-central Europe after mid-week, so it will be theirs to enjoy (or not) with unseasonable chill likely in places like Stockholm, Berlin and Warsaw.

Eventually the settled regime may break down somewhat but there could also be intrusions of even warmer air at times. My forecast for May is for temperatures to average 1-2 C above normal, rainfall may be close to normal but at times it may be rather dry like April had been before yesterday.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast with a misty drizzle in the air at times, not really leaving much moisture, and highs near 13 C.

If you think skies might clear after midnight, there is a close conjunction of brightest planets Venus and Jupiter potentially visible in the pre-dawn twilight (high in the east-southeast around 0300-0400 hours). I have not had a good chance to view it here (yet). Yesterday was new moon and there was a total eclipse visible only from the Pacific Ocean west of South America.

Monday, 2 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 2 to 8 May --

The weather will be rather warm and frequently cloudy with a few breaks but some longer sunny intervals at times. Occasional light rain showers will eventually add up to perhaps half the normal amount of rain over seven days, and it will not be particularly breezy with a flow mostly from the west to northwest.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to overcast at times, with a few isolated showers at first, somewhat more widespread outbreaks of light rain moving in from the northwest at times by afternoon, but only giving small amounts of rain in some areas. Highs 17 to 19 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few light showers, lows 8 to 12 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers, becoming more widespread later in the day. Highs 16 to 18 C.

WEDNESDAY will have some longer sunny intervals before cloud thickens in the afternoon with outbreaks of light rain mostly confined to north Connacht and west Ulster late in the day. Lows 7 to 10 C and highs 18 to 20 C south, central, 15 to 17 C north.

This rather bland weather pattern will continue into the late stages of the week and through next weekend (7-8 May). Highs during that period will continue to range from 17 to 20 C. Nights will be mild with lows 5-8 C inland and 8-11 C in cities and around coastal areas.

The following week could be slightly cooler with more frequent rainfalls but some warmer intervals will return around mid-month as that second week draws towards its weekend conclusion (14th-15th).

My local weather on Sunday was overcast but faintly on the warm side for a change with a few raindrops but no measurable amounts, highs 15-17 C.

Tuesday, 3 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain rather cloudy and faintly warm with small amounts of rain, possibly improving towards the weekend.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather cloudy with scattered outbreaks of drizzle or light rain, not much accumulation likely, perhaps somewhat more widespread by late afternoon. Highs 16 to 18 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast with fog and mist over higher terrain, spotty drizzle continuing, lows 9 to 12 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with isolated showers, rather warm, highs 16 to 19 C.

THURSDAY will be cloudy with occasional light rain, only 1 to 3 mm expected, lows near 10 C and highs near 17 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy, perhaps longer sunny breaks by afternoon, and warm. Lows 8 to 10 C, highs 18 to 21 C.

The WEEKEND also looks partly cloudy to sunny at times, and warm, highs close to 20 C inland.

Next week is looking generally rather cloudy with increasing threats of rain at times, temperatures dropping back to around 15 C.

My local weather on Monday was overcast but rather warm with a high near 18 C. We are going to enjoy two or three very warm days now (finally) before it turns much cooler with rain on Friday here.
