Wednesday, 4 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 4 to 10 May --

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal.

-- Rainfall will amount to 50-75 per cent of normal. Friday may produce the most, along with next Tuesday (10th).

-- Sunshine will be 75 to 100 per cent of normal. It may require some long sunny intervals on the weekend to reach that range, starting out rather cloudy.

-- Seldom more than light southwest to westerly breezes.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with some afternoon sunny breaks, and just a few isolated brief showers. Highs 17 to 20 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast, lows 7-10 C.

THURSDAY will bring increasing cloud and some late afternoon and evening outbreaks of light rain. Highs 16 to 18 C.

FRIDAY will be mostly cloudy with occasional rain, potential for 10-15 mm in some parts of the south midlands, lesser amounts further north. Rather humid with lows near 10 C and highs near 16 C.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY should improve to at least partly cloudy if not sunny skies, hazy and rather warm especially away from south coast which could remain under low cloud and intermittent sea fog incursions. For most, lows near 10 C and highs 18 to 22 C.

NEXT WEEK will begin to become a bit more unsettled with the heaviest rainfalls likely by Tuesday, with temperatures back into the 15-18 C range. There are signs of another warm spell towards mid-month to the 20th.

My local weather on Tuesday was sunny with afternoon cloudy intervals, and warm. Highs reached about 22 C locally and 24 C in the valley. We are expecting today and Thursday to remain rather warm and cloudy, then rain Thursday night into Friday. That cold front will create a severe storm risk more significant east of the Rockies on Friday, after they get up fairly close to 30C for a couple of days. May is rather early for severe storms this far north, that might be more common in the central plains states.

Thursday, 5 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 5 to 11 May --

-- Temperatures will average 1 to 2 deg above normal.

-- Rainfall will average 75 per cent of normal to near normal.

-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

-- Somewhat stronger winds will develop at times later in the weekly interval (around Tuesday 10th).

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of light rain, somewhat heavier by late in the day. Highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with occasional rain, lows 9 to 12 C.

FRIDAY will be cloudy with rain, heavy at times, tapering off to showers mid-afternoon, then some partial clearing by evening. Highs 14 to 17 C.

SATURDAY and SUNDAY will be rather warm with some sunny breaks both days, despite a rather cloudy start, and scattered light outbreaks of rain possible especially north and west. Highs both days 18 to 21 C, morning lows 10 to 13 C.

MONDAY will bring increasing cloud with rain developing late afternoon or evening, highs near 20 C.

TUESDAY will turn quite breezy (southwest 50-70 km/hr) with a risk of thundery showers but clearing during the afternoon. Highs near 18 C.

The rest of next week will be somewhat cooler with a few outbreaks of light rain, but a very warm interval could follow with highs into the 20s.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with a few glimpses of sunshine late afternoon and evening. There were outbreaks of drizzly light rain moving through the region mostly to our north and it was quite warm, near 20C. Finally getting onto the golf course.

Friday, 6 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 6 to 12 May --

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 3 degrees above normal, despite being closer to average by 11th-12th.

-- Rainfall will average near normal, but about two thirds of it will fall today, so the rest of the weekly interval will run fairly dry.

-- Sunshine will be 50 to 75 per cent of normal values (now near their annual peak in many places, 6 hours a day).

-- Becoming more breezy by Monday-Tuesday but relatively light winds on other days in the week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will bring outbreaks of moderate to heavy rain already underway in parts of Connacht and west Ulster. The heaviest amounts (15-20 mm) will be in the north midlands and much of Connacht. Amounts may be closer to 10 mm near the south and east coasts. Some partial clearing late afternoon to evening at least in western counties. Highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy but due to the rain it could be quite misty or even foggy in places. Lows 8-11 C.

SATURDAY will become brighter once the morning mist, fog and low cloud are exposed to the sun, and parts of the day could be quite sunny with warm highs 17 to 20 C inland. A few coastal areas may remain closer to 14 C due to cool sea breezes and/or lingering mist and low cloud.

SUNDAY will start out bright and turn cloudy later in the day with rain at times by evening. Lows near 11 C and highs near 19 C.

MONDAY will be breezy with outbreaks of rain (5-10 mm expected), southwest winds increasing to 50-70 km/hr, lows near 12 C and highs 14 to 17 C.

TUESDAY will be breezy or even windy in some exposed western counties, winds southwest to west 50-80 km/hr, a few remnant showers but partial clearing, lows near 13 C and highs near 17 C.

WEDNESDAY will be cloudy with sunny intervals, and a few showers by afternoon, somewhat cooler with highs near 14 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with occasional showers, highs near 14 C.

From next FRIDAY (13th) on, warmer again and possibly very warm at times with subtropical air showing up over the region. Highs could reach the low to mid 20s at times around the following week.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with frequent rain, about 10-15 mm fell as a cold front develops, temperatures were steady near 15 C until the afternoon then dropped to around 7 C. The warmer air is still in place over the prairies and Montana, awaiting the arrival of this cold front during the morning hours. Some severe storms are likely to develop further east. Meanwhile, the southern U.S. will be roasting in an early summer heat wave with readings in parts of Texas close to 38 C (100F). This heat is not pushing north and the east coast will be in a northeast wind flow around offshore low pressure. Temperatures for the big cities of the eastern states will only be around 15 C.

Saturday, 7 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS _ In general, the first week ahead will be rather close to average values, and the second week ahead will be warm and dry.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will gradually clear to sunny intervals, except in some coastal areas where low cloud, fog or mist could persist longer. Inland highs should easily reach 18-20 C. Some coastal areas could be held down to 14-16 C. Light winds can be expected.

TONIGHT will see a return of fog and mist in some areas, despite clear skies above low cloud layers. Lows 8-11 C.

SUNDAY will bring increasing cloud with some outbreaks of light rain by late in the day in western counties. Highs 16-18 C.

MONDAY will be breezy (southwest 50-70 km/hr) and overcast with intervals of rain (5-10 mm generally, 10-15 mm possible). Lows 12-14 C and highs 15-17 C.

TUESDAY will become cooler during the day with showers ending, quite breezy (winds southwest to west 50-80 km/hr). Lows near 13 C and highs near 17 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will likely be rather cool with occasional showers. Highs near 14 C.

FRIDAY will see some warmer air returning, highs near 19 C.

From then on the guidance suggests that it could be very warm for at least a week, with highs pushing into the 20s.

My local weather on Friday was mostly cloudy with some light rain in the afternoon, chilly with highs only reaching about 10-12 C.

Sunday, 8 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 8-14 May --

-- Temperatures will average near normal or 0.5-1.0 above normal in some parts. Coolest around Thursday.

-- Rainfall will average 50-75 per cent of normal values.

-- Sunshine will also average 50-75 per cent of normal.

-- Becoming breezier than recent days, winds often southwest 50-70 km/hr.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy in the east after any mist or fog dissipates. Becoming overcast in the west with occasional light rain by late afternoon. Highs generally 16-18 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast with rain at times, breezy (southwest 40-60 km/hr), and mild with lows 11-13 C.

MONDAY will be mostly cloudy with occasional rain, sometimes rather heavy in parts of Connacht and west Ulster. Winds southwest 50-70 km/hr, highs around 15-17 C.

TUESDAY will also be quite breezy with clearing skies for part of the day, then overcast with rain towards evening. Winds southwest 50-70 km/hr, lows near 10 C and highs near 16 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy once the overnight rain ends, and then a few isolated showers may develop again, less breezy, lows near 9 C and highs near 16 C.

THURSDAY will be cloudy and rather cool with occasional rain, lows near 7 C and highs near 14 C.

FRIDAY will become sunny by mid-day and warmer with highs around 18 C.

There may follow a warm to very warm week with highs into the 22-25 C range possibly. That could persist for a bit longer than a week, before a gradual breakdown but only a slight decrease in temperatures with more cloud and some rain eventually returning to the mix.

My local weather on Saturday was once again quite chilly with passing showers giving some hail as well as cold driving rain, one brief thunderstorm and highs only around 10 C. Some of the heavier showers brought colder air down and it would briefly cool off to 5 C suggesting that it was likely snowing on nearby hilltops. We have a few more days like this ahead before we get back into anything remotely spring-like. Severe heat has developed over central Texas, around Abilene, Midland and San Angelo highs were around 43 C (or close to 108-110 F). There is a more average sort of heat with humidity from Dallas north into the plains states where severe storms have developed. The east coast rain is moving out to sea and that region can expect a slow warming trend for several days. If you happened to see any of the PGA golf you might have noticed that it was only 10 C and raining all day in the Washington DC area on Saturday. That is about 15 deg below their current normal daytime high.

Monday, 9 May, 2022 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 9-15 May --

-- Temperatures will average near normal or 0.5-1.0 above normal in some parts. Coolest around Thursday.

-- Rainfall will average 50-75 per cent of normal values.

-- Sunshine will also average 50-75 per cent of normal.

-- Becoming breezier than recent days, winds often southwest 50-70 km/hr.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with occasional rain, sometimes rather heavy in parts of Connacht and west Ulster. Winds southwest 50-70 km/hr, highs around 15-17 C. Total rainfalls 10-15 mm north, west, and 5-10 mm east, south.

TONIGHT will be mostly cloudy and breezy with showers and some clear intervals too, winds southwest 50-70 km/hr. Lows near 10 C.

NEXT WEEKEND will be settled and warm with highs 20-22 C. The following week continues to look warm although sometimes cloudy with light rain in some western counties at times. Highs should continue to reach the low and possibly mid 20s.

My local weather on Sunday was cloudy and unseasonably cold with passing showers of sleety rain sometimes changing to snow. That didn't stick due to the temperatures being 3-5 C but the snow line has come down nearby hills to almost our elevation again. We must make human sacrifices and appease the weather gods (and don't suppose I am short of good suggestions).

Tuesday, 10 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 10 to 16 May 2022 --

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 3 deg above normal values. Somewhat cooler around Thursday (near or just below normal there).

-- Rainfalls will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

-- Sunshine will average about 75 per cent also, could reach normal totals in a few eastern locations.

-- Wind speeds generally moderate and prevailing direction southwest backing to south/southeast later.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy and breezy with passing showers, some briefly heavy in parts of the north. More widespread outbreaks of rain may develop later. Highs 15-17 C. Winds southwest 50-70 km/hr.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy with a few showers. Lows 8-10 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, highs 14-17 C.

THURSDAY will be cloudy with a few brighter intervals, one or two isolated showers, lows 6-9 C and highs 13-16 C.

FRIDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals, lows near 6 C and highs 18-20 C.

SATURDAY will be sunny with increasing cloud, and warm, lows near 12 C and highs 21-23 C inland, 17-20 C near coasts.

SUNDAY will bring variable cloud and scattered possibly thundery showers moving from south to north, still rather warm, lows 12-14 C and highs 19-22 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast and warm with rain in the west late in the day, lows near 14 C and highs 20-23 C.

It will likely remain quite warm for most of the remainder of May which looks like finishing quite a bit above average for temperatures.

That is opposite to what I'm seeing here, a very cold May so far with frequent wintry showers on Monday, one of which put down 2-3 cm of graupel (sleet) that looked like snow cover after the fact, and was around for several hours. Temperatures had reached perhaps 8 C before that rolled in and then dropped to about 2 C. There was one rumble of thunder towards the end of the shower and then further mixed showers later.

Wednesday, 11 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS remain similar to previous days' discussions. It will be a pleasant weekend between somewhat less settled intervals but even those not overly wet.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few showers or outbreaks of light rain in some parts, rainfalls of 1-3 mm fairly widespread, 3-5 mm is possible in a few places. Highs 15-17 C. Some showers could become heavy enough to produce hail and thunder (most likely in the midlands).

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast with occasional light rain or drizzle, lows 7 to 9 C.

THURSDAY will be mostly cloudy and rather cool with a few showers around, highs 14-16 C.

FRIDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals and warmer, lows 6-9 C and highs 18-21 C.

SATURDAY will be sunny with a few cloudy intervals, isolated late afternoon or evening showers, and warm, lows near 12 C and highs 21-24 C inland, 17-20 C near coasts.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with a risk of thundery showers developing across the inland south by afternoon, spreading further north in the evening and overnight. Warm and rather humid, lows 12-15 C and highs 19-23 C.

MONDAY will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain, 5-10 mm likely, potentially heavier in some western counties. Moderate southerly winds of 50 to 70 km/hr. Lows near 15 C and highs near 19 C west, 21 C east.

The rest of next week may be rather unsettled, generally quite warm especially night-time values relative to May averages. A warmer air mass will frequently be located over Britain and France, with eastern counties of Ireland sometimes getting into that but frontal boundaries may persist over central to western counties. Eventually this frontal zone will become more active and there could be heavy and thundery downpours later in the week as a result.

My local weather improved slightly on Tuesday, no wintry showers, just one brief ordinary rain shower, and some longer sunny breaks despite a cloudy theme, with temperatures slightly closer to our normal (at about 11 C) than the previous two days. Not expecting much further improvement as we are stuck in a broad long-wave trough here, with the jet stream coming into the western U.S. over south-central CA, southern NV and UT into Colorado where storms are developing frequently as a result, moving out into the plains states -- it's a bonanza for storm chasers anyway. Severe heat and dry windy conditions have the range fire hazard at extreme in southern New Mexico and parts of Texas.

Thursday, 12 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 12 to 18 May 2022 --

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 3 deg above normal values.

-- Rainfall will average 75 per cent of normal and possibly up to the average in parts of the west.

-- Sunshine will average near normal, as long as Friday and the weekend are sunny; other days likely mostly cloudy though.

-- Winds moderate southwest backing more to south and sometimes strong, risk of very strong winds in Atlantic coastal counties by about Tues or Wed.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy with some breaks more frequently favouring east and south coast locations. Outbreaks of light rain mostly confined to west and north may become a bit more widespread by late afternoon. Highs 14 to 17 C.

TONIGHT will be rather cloudy with a few light showers in northern counties, lows near 8 C.

FRIDAY will be rather cloudy at first then partly cloudy with longer sunny intervals by afternoon. Highs 18-20 C.

SATURDAY will be sunny with a few cloudy intervals later in the day, isolated showers could develop in north central counties. Quite warm, lows around 12 C and highs 20-23 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers and risk of a thunderstorm moving into the inland south late in the day. Warm and humid, lows 12-14 C and highs 19-22 C.

MONDAY will be mostly cloudy in western counties with outbreaks of rain developing, partly cloudy in the east with showers later, still rather warm, lows 13-15 C and highs 18-21 C.

TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY look unsettled with the risk of an interval of strong southerly winds near the west coast, this may stay largely out to sea as a strong low moves north around 20 deg W longitude, but it looks close enough to place western counties on alert for the potential for strong gusts, timing a bit uncertain this far ahead. Most other regions could expect outbreaks of rain and moderate southerly winds, temperatures in a rather narrow range 14-18 C.

Further ahead next week, staying reasonably warm with a few more showers at times, but more variable after the weekend of 21st-22nd. It won't surprise me if that warmer theme that was looking more "locked in" returns to the charts though, as some of the guidance at present has fairly low confidence attached.

My local weather improved again with mostly sunny skies, allowing afternoon highs to creep up closer to the mid-teens. It's still the same rather cool air mass but a full day of sunshine at this time of year tends to warm it up reasonably well. Quite a volatile stormy pattern over central North America where the jet stream is located. This is drawing very warm air up into the western Great Lakes region with an active cold front further west.

Friday, 13 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS continue warm, near-average rainfall expected, perhaps a bit heavier in some places by middle of next week, and sometimes rather breezy.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be cloudy at first, then some sunny breaks should develop especially in parts of the south and east. A few showers are possible in the north and west this morning. Moderate southwest winds will continue 40-60 km/hr, and highs will reach 18-21 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy and rather mild with lows 10-12 C.

SATURDAY will bring a mixture of cloud and sunshine with perhaps longer or more generous sunshine intervals across the southeast and midlands. Rather warm, highs 18-22 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy, warm and rather humid, with isolated showers or thunderstorms forming near the south coast and moving gradually towards the midlands by evening. Lows 12-14 C and highs 19-23 C.

MONDAY will be overcast with occasional rain, rather heavy at times in parts of the south and west. Warm and humid with lows near 14 C and highs 18 to 21 C.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY still appear rather unsettled with strong southerly winds possible, especially over Atlantic coastal counties where they could gust to 90 km/hr or higher (120 km/hr is possible out to sea). Temperatures will remain in a rather narrow range 14-18 C, with frequent outbreaks of rain and possible thunderstorms in a few locations. Rainfalls in the 20-40 mm range seem possible although this is not confirmed yet.

It would appear that this unsettled phase will gradually simmer down to conditions more similar to those of today and tomorrow, by the end of next week, so that another fairly decent weekend with warm temperatures could then follow.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with spits of rain mid-day, not persisting but quite a low cloud deck with temperatures only 8-10 C despite a southerly breeze.

Saturday, 14 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 14 to 20 May, 2022 --

-- Temperatures will average 2 to 4 deg above normal values.

-- Rainfalls will total near normal, within 25 per cent.

-- Sunshine will also be near average but some days will be rather cloudy.

-- Winds generally moderate southerly, sometimes strong near Atlantic coasts.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will feature warm temperatures with a mixture of cloud and sunshine with perhaps longer or more generous sunny intervals across the southeast and midlands. Highs 18-22 C, warmest away from south coast.

TONIGHT will be hazy and mild with a full moon and possibly some sightings of a lunar halo created by high cloud layers. Lows 9 to 13 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy, warm and rather humid, with isolated showers or thunderstorms forming near the south coast and moving gradually towards the midlands by evening. Highs 19-23 C.

MONDAY will be overcast with occasional rain, rather heavy during the morning. Some partial clearing may follow from the southwest by afternoon. About 10-15 mm of rain is possible. Winds southeast to south 50-70 km/hr, isolated gusts to 90 km/hr near Atlantic coasts. Highs 14 to 17 C north, and 18 to 21 C south.

TUESDAY will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain sometimes rather heavy, with strong winds at times from the south at 60-90 km/hr. Stronger winds are likely out to sea west of the Irish coast as a deep low moves north around 20 deg W longitude. Lows 12-14 C and highs 15-17 C.

WEDNESDAY will continue unsettled with gusty south to southwest winds and showers, lows 11-13 C and highs 14-16 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY should see a gradual improvement with showers less frequent and winds less blustery at southwest 30-50 km/hr. Highs both days around 16 or 17 C.

The following weekend (21st-22nd) may be fairly settled and warm again with highs in the low 20s possible.

Although the setup is then somewhat variable, high pressure nearby promises a fairly dry week and temperatures close to average or possibly a little above normal at times.

My local weather on Friday started out with a wet snow leaving slushy accumulations. That cleared away during the morning with sunny breaks and passing flurries in a cold westerly wind, highs may have reached 7 C between showers but it was unseasonably cold especially when snow showers were passing. We are now looking at a gradual warming trend with 16-18 C possible here by middle of next week. That is still only average for this climate but it will seem like a warm spell in comparison.

Sunday, 15 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week ahead ... continuing rather warm but gradually settling back towards mid-May average values. Unsettled at times with outbreaks of rain eventually adding up to as much as 25% above normal. Not as much sunshine as would be average for May (which is around 6 hours a day). Quite breezy at times.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will have some warm sunny intervals, with a gradual increase in cloud. A few morning showers in east Ulster and parts of north Leinster. Further showers approaching the south coast towards evening. Highs 18 to 22 C.

TONIGHT will be mostly cloudy and quite mild with showers and risk of an isolated thunderstorm inland south to midlands. Lows 12 to 15 C.

MONDAY will see the showers moving gradually northward followed by partly cloudy skies in parts of Munster, south Connacht and the midlands. Highs 17-21 C. Rather windy at times, southerly 40-70 km/hr. Some stronger gusts overnight in western coastal counties, 60-90 km/hr.

TUESDAY will be rather cloudy with a few showers then intervals of heavier rainfall with 20-30 mm potential in places. Southerly winds 40-70 km/hr with some higher gusts possible. Lows near 13 C and highs 15-17 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will continue rather unsettled with temperatures in the range of 12 to 17 C. Some rain both days, with moderate south to southwest winds at times.

The outlook is rather uncertain with guidance somewhat split and showing signs of frequent change indicating no strong signals, it's possible that it may remain rather unsettled with earlier indications of pleasant weather for the weekend fading out of the guidance (for now, it could return).

My local weather on Saturday was overcast with occasional light rain, probably not adding up to much more than 1 mm in total, just enough to wet the pavement at times. It remained rather chilly although we did get past 10 C at least (not very far past though).

Monday, 16 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 16 to 22 May --

-- Temperatures will average 1-2 deg above normal, with the trend towards more average readings later.

-- Rainfalls will total about normal amounts, with somewhat heavier totals possible in Leinster (due to heavy rain late Tuesday there).

-- Sunshine will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal in a rather cloudy regime.

-- Winds generally moderate south to southwest, strong at times tonight in western counties.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will have variable amounts of cloud and bands of showery rainfall which may contain one or two thunderstorms, further amounts of about 5-10 mm. Rather warm and humid with moderate southerly winds, 40-60 km/hr. Highs 17-21 C.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast with occasional showers and blustery winds from the south at 50-80 km/hr in exposed coastal locations. Lows 12 to 15 C.

TUESDAY will be cloudy with a few brighter intervals, scattered showers at first, then an interval of heavier rain likely by afternoon in eastern counties (20-30 mm potential with that). Winds southerly 40-60 km/hr. Highs 15-17 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few more showers, moderate south to southwest breezes, lows 12-14 C and highs 15-17 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, a bit warmer as more sunshine is likely, lows near 10 C and highs 17 to 19 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 15 C.

SATURDAY will bring partly cloudy skies and isolated showers, lows near 8 C and highs near 16 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny at times, lows near 9 C and highs near 18 C.

The outlook for the following week is rather speculative but it looks reasonably good at this point with rain less frequent than this coming week and temperatures at least average if not a touch above normal.

My local weather on Sunday was overcast and quite foggy at times with a steady light rain, probably about 5-8 mm in total, and temperatures steady near 10 C. This prevented any viewing of a total eclipse of the moon which was occurring behind all the cloud at sunset (and moonrise). Somewhat warmer temperatures are expected for a few days now here.

Tuesday, 17 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS will continue breezy and unsettled with at least average amounts of rain, rather cloudy with temperatures still somewhat above average.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be breezy in all regions but quite windy for part of the morning on the west coast as the outer edges of a rather intense (for May) ocean storm brush past with southerly wind gusts there to 90 km/hr. After a few showers, heavier rain is likely in Leinster mid-day to afternoon, with 20 mm possible in places. Scattered showers further west will not be as heavy. Highs 15 to 17 C with southerly winds (apart from the stronger coastal readings) 40-60 km/hr.

TONIGHT will continue mostly cloudy with a few showers, lows 12-14 C.

WEDNESDAY another pulse of heavy rain will move in during the morning, this time delivering heavier amounts of about 15 mm to western counties. Quite breezy from south to southwest, highs 14-16 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with only a few isolated showers near the west coast and with more sunshine it will get a bit warmer with lows 12-14 C and highs 17-20 C.

FRIDAY will be overcast and breezy with showers or outbreaks of light rain (5-10 mm expected). Lows near 10 C and highs near 15 C.

SATURDAY will be cloudy with some sunny breaks, and a few scattered showers later in the day, lows near 9 C and highs near 17 C.

SUNDAY will also be partly cloudy to overcast with lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.

Next week continues to look rather average with a bit of every type of weather but not far from seasonal normals.

My local weather improved to partly cloudy and rather warm compared to the past week, with a high near 16 C.

Wednesday, 18 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 18 to 24 May --

Temperatures will average near normal or slightly above.

Rainfall will reach normal amounts in the west, closer to 50%-75% in the east.

Sunshine will be only 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

Breezy from the southwest most days.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will bring outbreaks of rain to most western counties, 10-15 mm expected, winds south-southwest 40-70 km/hr. Partly cloudy to start in the east with scattered showers, risk of a thunderstorm later. Winds south to southwest 30-50 km/hr. Highs near 16 C west, 18 C east.

TONIGHT will be cloudy with moderate southwest winds, light rain ending around midnight. Lows 7-9 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with reasonably generous sunny intervals likely in the south and east. Late day showers possible inland west. Highs 17 to 21 C.

FRIDAY will be overcast with occasional rain. Lows near 10 C and highs 14-16 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers mostly inland west, midlands. Lows 8-10 C and highs 16-19 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.

Most of next week looks rather unsettled now, with some intervals of strong winds and blustery showers mid-week and beyond. Temperatures are expected to average about 15-18 C in the daytimes, lows 7-10 C.

My local weather was partly cloudy to overcast with a high around 15 C. We are expecting some active weather in the region on Wednesday as a strong (for mid-May) ocean storm comes inland bringing gusty winds and mountain snowfalls probably starting above our elevation this time, so more of a cold rain likely here by later in the day and perhaps some strong wind gusts. Parts of Alberta may see snow by tonight and Thursday too.

Thursday, 19 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 19 to 25 May --

-- Temperatures will be near normal values.

-- Rainfalls will be 50 to 75 per cent of normal.

-- Sunshine will be close to average, perhaps a bit below especially in western counties.

-- Moderate southwest winds will dominate.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be sunny with increasing afternoon cloud in most areas, but cloudy from late morning in parts of the west where some scattered light showers could develop. Staying dry further east. Highs 18 to 21 C.

TONIGHT will become mostly cloudy with light rain at times, lows 12 to 14 C.

FRIDAY will be cloudy with showers, some partial clearing by late afternoon and evening, highs 14 to 17 C.

SATURDAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers mainly in the northern and central regions, lows near 8 C and highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers and lows near 8 C, highs 18 to 20 C.

MONDAY will turn a bit cooler with frequent showers, lows near 7 C and highs near 15 C.

TUESDAY will then become partly cloudy again with highs near 18 C.

WEDNESDAY (25th) will become breezy to windy with passing showers, highs near 17 C.

The further outlook calls for continued variable weather with some unsettled spells mixed in, temperatures in a similar range.

My local weather was mostly cloudy with a high of 13 C, with afternoon showers including one with some rather large hail for about two minutes. No thunder observed but no doubt some thunderstorms from this front in other parts of the region. Wind damage was reported on Vancouver Island around mid-day, we only had moderate westerly gusts here. A big clash of air masses over the upper Midwest states like Iowa and Wisconsin expected to produce severe storms there later today.

Friday, 20 May, 2022 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS continue rather bland with near normal temperatures, rainfall also close to average, sunshine perhaps a bit below average.

    FORECASTS

TODAY some rather heavy showers will move gradually across the country, already underway near Atlantic coasts, due to arrive on the east coast around mid-day. Some thunderstorms may develop by afternoon. Partial clearing will follow giving a few brighter intervals for the late afternoon and evening in western counties. Highs 15 to 18 C. Rainfall amounts about 10-15 mm.

TONIGHT will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few showers across northern counties, lows 8 to 11 C.

SATURDAY will be mostly cloudy with some brighter intervals in the south, showers most frequent and widespread in the north although most places will see at least some showers. Highs 16 to 18 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with showers more isolated, lows near 8 C and highs near 18 C.

MONDAY will be a cooler day than most this month, with frequent showers, some locally heavy. Lows near 7 C and highs near 15 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy with rain late in the day, rather breezy to windy in places (southwest 40-70 km/hr), lows near 8 C and highs near 16 C.

WEDNESDAY some morning showers will be followed by partial clearing and highs near 17 C, continued quite breezy.

The rest of next week looks similar in terms of temperatures, with a bit more rain at times. The following weekend may see improvements to more sunshine, and somewhat warmer temperatures.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast but dry, and chilly with a northerly wind and highs only around 12 C. It continues to be a notably cold spring with a slow start to the growing season.

Saturday, 21 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 21-27 May --

-- Temperatures will average near normal, Monday rather cool and Thursday to Saturday becoming warmer than average.

-- Rainfalls will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal, rather frequent but light showers to about midweek then largely dry.

-- Sunshine will average 75 per cent of normal, much of what we do get will occur towards the end of the interval, quite cloudy until then.

-- Moderate and occasionally strong southwest to west winds will dominate but an interval of more variable and lighter winds will follow.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy, with light showers developing although most places will only see 1 or 2 mm amounts and parts of the southeast could remain dry. Highs 16 to 18 C.

TONIGHT will bring a few showers and lows near 10 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few more light showers, turning somewhat heavier by afternoon in the west and north. Highs 16 to 18 and rather humid.

MONDAY will become cooler than most recent days with heavier showers developing, lows near 9 C and highs near 15 C.

TUESDAY will have a dry if rather cloudy start, with winds picking up gradually to reach southwest 40-70 km/hr by late in the day, as a front sweeps in with an interval of blustery showers overnight. Lows near 10 C and highs near 17 C.

WEDNESDAY will bring clearing skies and moderate westerly breezes, lows near 11 C and highs near 16 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY are looking quite pleasant with sunny intervals, light winds and highs near 20 C. This may well last into SATURDAY too, then by SUNDAY (29th) a somewhat cooler northeast flow will cut into the dry air mass, although the frontal passage looks rather weak and there may be little if any rain with this cooler turn at the end of May.

My local weather on Friday was overcast with occasional light rain and a high near 12 C. The weather is so bleak here that bears are knocking on doors asking if there's any chance of a handout as nothing is growing in the bush.

Sunday, 22 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS continue as discussed, fairly average in most regards, warmer towards end of the week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy to overcast with a few more light showers, turning somewhat heavier by afternoon in the west and north. Highs 16 to 18 and rather humid.

TONIGHT will be overcast with showers, lows near 9 C.

MONDAY will become cooler than most recent days with heavier showers developing, lows near 9 C and highs near 15 C. Rainfalls 5-15 mm heaviest inland southeast, midlands.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy with a few showers, highs near 17 C.

FRIDAY could be quite pleasant with sunny intervals, light winds and highs near 20 C. This may well last into SATURDAY too, then by SUNDAY (29th) a somewhat cooler northeast flow will cut into the dry air mass, although the frontal passage looks rather weak and there may be little if any rain with this cooler turn at the end of May. In fact this push of cooler air may just drop temperatures a degree or two with a few more sunny days possible into early June, then a more substantial push of cooler air from the northeast possibly.

My local weather on Saturday was partly cloudy to sunny by afternoon and this allowed it to warm up a little, to around 15 C. Hot for a day or two in eastern regions of the U.S., meanwhile a strong cold front in Ontario brought severe storms with wind damage reported northeast of Toronto.

Monday, 23 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 23-29 May --

-- Temperatures will average near normal to 1.0 deg above normal, warmest Friday to Sunday.

-- Rainfalls will average 50-75 per cent of normal, rather frequent at first, dry interval expected Friday to Sunday.

-- Sunshine will average about 75 per cent of normal, rather cloudy to Thursday, sunny intervals more frequent Friday to Sunday.

-- Winds picking up to moderate-strong southwest to west in direction mid-week then gradually becoming light and variable, eventually northeast by Sunday.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be rather cloudy with scattered showers becoming heavier and more persistent by afternoon. Some parts of the midlands and inland southeast could see 10-15 mm rainfalls. Rather cool with highs 14 to 16 C.

TONIGHT will be mostly cloudy with rain ending around midnight, lows near 10 C.

TUESDAY could have a few brighter intervals late morning and mid-day, otherwise cloudy with outbreaks of rain developing for the afternoon (west) and evening (east). Highs near 17 C. Winds picking up gradually to southwest 40-70 km/hr late in the day and overnight. Some blustery showers likely during Tuesday night.

WEDNESDAY will see the showers clearing east into the Irish Sea before mid-day, sunny intervals and isolated showers to follow with winds rather strong at times from the west at 50-80 km/hr. Lows near 12 C and highs near 17 C.

THURSDAY will bring cloudy intervals and showers, lows near 10 C and highs near 16 C.

FRIDAY will become mostly sunny and a bit warmer, lows near 7 C and highs near 18 C possibly 20 C in parts of the midlands.

SATURDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals, slight chance of an isolated shower near hilly terrain in the west, lows near 7 C and highs 19-23 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with a slightly cooling northeast breeze, highs near 20 C in west Munster, 16-18 C elsewhere.

Next week appears likely to see persistent east winds, a gradual increase in cloudiness, and eventually showers or even isolated thunderstorms, with temperatures in the range of 15-19 C daytime hours, 10-13 C overnight.

My local weather improved to partly cloudy then sunny by afternoon, highs reaching 18 C. It was a nice change from all the unseasonably cool weather all month. Locations in the Pacific northwest are heading towards a record cold May or bottom five in the past century. Denver CO had some snow on the ground for a while over the weekend.

Tuesday, 24 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS continue similar, temperatures gradually warming at the end of the week and into the weekend, average will be 1-2 deg above normal, despite frequent showers at first, overall rainfall amounts a bit below normal, sunshine improving after a cloudy start to the interval, and winds sometimes rather blustery at first, then settling down to light and variable under higher pressure.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with scattered showers for most areas, followed by a more organized band of rain with some embedded heavy showers and slight risk of a thunderstorm by evening. Highs 15-17 C.

TONIGHT rain will continue, with winds rather blustery at times, southwest 50-70 km/hr. Lows 11-13 C. Rainfalls 5-15 mm.

WEDNESDAY will bring partial clearing once the morning rain departs east, and there could be some longer sunny intervals in the south. A few more showers will then follow. Winds west-southwest 50-70 km/hr easing by late afternoon. Highs near 18 C.

THURSDAY will bring some outbreaks of light rain in the morning followed by a slow, gradual clearing trend. Lows near 10 C and highs near 17 C.

FRIDAY will be mostly sunny and a bit warmer, lows 7-10 C and highs 17-20 C.

SATURDAY will also bring sunny intervals and warm temperatures, lows 7-10 C and highs 18-22 C.

SUNDAY will continue dry and pleasant, if perhaps a degree or two cooler due to a light north to northeast breeze developing. Lows 5-8 C and highs 17-20 C.

The outlook is for fairly settled weather to continue, with perhaps more cloud in the mix and a slight chance of showers in a variable wind pattern that may have an easterly theme.

My local weather on a holiday Monday here was cloudy but rather warm with spits of rain not amounting to much until a heavier shower around the end of the afternoon. The high was around 19 C.

Wednesday, 25 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 25 to 31 May --

-- Temperatures will average about 1-2 deg above normal values, peaking around this coming weekend then falling back closer to average values.

-- Rainfall will amount to 25 per cent of normal values as a dry spell begins on Friday. Some light rain at times today and tomorrow.

-- Sunshine will probably improve to at least normal despite considerable cloud today and Thursday, as the dry spell will be at least partly cloudy if not sunny at times.

-- Blustery west-southwest winds should ease over the next two days and then the dominant theme will be light and variable, becoming north to northeast breezes after the weekend.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be breezy with a few more drizzly light showers, with a gradual clearing trend after mid-day, although there will continue to be a few isolated showers around too. Winds westerly 40-60 km/hr easing gradually this afternoon. Highs 16-18 C.

TONIGHT will be rather cloudy with showers, lows near 10 C.

THURSDAY will bring further light showers mostly during the morning to mid-day interval, then another slow clearing will begin. Highs 16-18 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny in most places although some low cloud could linger near some south and west coast shores. Lows 7-10 C and highs 16-19 C.

SATURDAY will feature some longer intervals of sunshine with a few cloudy periods mostly near coastlines. Lows 7-10 C and highs 19-22 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with lows 6-9 C and highs 17-20 C.

Next week, high pressure will be near Ireland and sometimes just off the west coast. Cooler air is going to try to push in from the northeast but it looks like this will be a rather weak push for most of Ireland, with Britain more likely to see a decrease in temperatures as there will be a stronger gradient to the north-northeast wind there. Even so, temperatures may fall back one or two degrees from the weekend, so will say at this point to expect highs most days around 17-19 C with rather cool nights 5-8 C. Skies will be partly cloudy to clear with just a slight chance of isolated showers over higher terrain in the north. This dry spell of weather will likely end around a week from Friday (3 June or so) with rain expected after that at times.

My local weather on Tuesday was overcast with spits of light rain and highs around 15 C. Our trees are very slowly coming out into full leaf now but are two weeks behind a normal schedule (which means the cottonwood "snow" will be postponed to around mid-June, I've come to expect it as nature's birthday present in early June, complete with allergic side effects -- we get drifts of the cottonwood spores that form after the aspens come into full leaf, and it seems to give quite a few people allergic reactions).

Thursday, 26 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS _ Warmer and drier for a few days after today's cool, cloudy and drizzly conditions. Then turning somewhat cooler again around Sunday and Monday.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will start out cloudy and cool with drizzly outbreaks of light rain, 2-4 mm likely in some places. Partial clearing later on, highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT will bring gradual clearing and perhaps the coldest readings of May so far, with lows 3 to 7 C.

FRIDAY will be mostly sunny with some low cloud present near outer coasts in the southwest and west. Highs 16 to 19 C.

SATURDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals, and quite warm inland. Lows 6 to 10 C and highs 19 to 22 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers as a slight north to northeast breeze develops, not quite as warm. Lows 6 to 9 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy with a few isolated showers in north Leinster and Ulster, lows near 8 C and highs near 17 C.

The rest of next week looks fairly settled with slightly warmer temperatures gradually returning. Outbreaks of rain are likely to resume near the end of next week around Friday 3rd June into the following weekend.

My local weather was heavily overcast with mainly dry conditions, a few drops of rain but just trace amounts, and chilly again with highs only around 12 degrees.

Friday, 27 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS _ Warm and dry to Sunday, then cooler, mostly cloudy, scattered showers.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will become mostly sunny with a few coastal areas taking longer to clear, and temperatures will warm to around 19 or 20 C inland, closer to 17 C in some coastal areas. Light winds will make it feel warmer, but would make it slow to clear if any coastal fog lingers.

TONIGHT will be clear with a few patches of fog or mist in low lying areas. Rather cool with lows 6 to 9 C.

SATURDAY will be mostly sunny and warm also, with highs 19 to 22 C.

SUNDAY will see a slight cooling trend in eastern counties and most of Ulster, with highs of about 17 C in those regions. Further west and south in particular it should remain almost as warm as Saturday (highs 18 to 21 C) with partly cloudy to sunny skies in all areas.

MONDAY will become cloudy with a few brighter intervals, and widespread showers across parts of the north, becoming less widespread further south. Rainfalls of 5-10 mm in the north, 2-5 mm central and 1-3 mm south. Northeast breezes for a while, then more variable, as a weak disturbance forms and moves southwest from Scotland across the northern half of Ireland. Lows near 10 C and highs near 14 C north to 17 C in the south.

TUESDAY the remnants of this disturbance will bring a few isolated showers but there will be a gradual clearing trend later in the day. Lows around 9 C and highs around 15 to 18 C.

The rest of the week is expected to be partly cloudy with occasional showers, and temperatures near average (meaning 15-18 C). There will be a threat of heavier rain at times but guidance is a little vague on details. Eventually there could be one or two more pleasant sunny days with alternating spells of dry and unsettled weather looking like the general theme for June, with temperatures near average.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with occasional rain by afternoon and highs near 17 C. This must be the gloomiest May in many aeons here (if I spell aeons correctly maybe it will brighten up, I am trying everything until something works).

Saturday, 28 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 28 May to 3 June --

-- Temperatures will average near or slightly below normal values. Rather cool at times next week.

-- Rainfalls will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal, possibly more as a rather wet pattern will develop around the end of this weekly interval.

-- Sunshine will average near normal thanks to a lot of sunshine this weekend mostly. Cloudy for several days after that.

-- Winds light northeast or variable most of the time, sometimes moderate.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly sunny. The early morning has been quite chilly with 2 C reported at Mountdillon during the night, but once the sun breaks down the inversion layer, it will warm up rapidly and reach highs of 17 to 21 C. Light winds in most areas will allow local sea breezes to develop.

TONIGHT will become partly cloudy and probably won't be as cool as last night, with lows 4 to 8 C possible but 8-10 C where cloud prevails.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy, warmth will disappear faster in Ulster and Leinster where a northeast breeze will develop, highs there only 14 to 17 C. It will be just about as warm as today in Munster and some parts of south and west Connacht, highs 17 to 20 C.

MONDAY will be mostly cloudy and cool, with showers, rather frequent and possibly heavy at times in the north, more widely scattered and briefer in duration in the south. Rainfall amounts will therefore vary from 5-15 mm north, to 2-5 mm south. Lows 8-10 C and highs 13-15 C.

TUESDAY will be partly cloudy with showers somewhat more isolated, longer bright spells likely to develop by afternoon, lows 5-8 C and highs 15-18 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy with highs near 19 C.

Around Thursday or Friday (timing somewhat uncertain) another disturbance will spin up and replace the weak high pressure of mid-week, and this could lead to locally heavy rainfalls with rather chilly temperatures considering it will then be 3rd of June or so. Highs only 12-15 C and rainfall potential 15-30 mm, however this situation is "evolving" and could be somewhat different in reality by then. It looks as though this will be less than a week-length interruption in the generally seasonable weather pattern and warmer weather could return later in the week following.

My local weather on Friday was cloudy with a few brief sunny intervals by afternoon, and it stayed dry most of the time with a few drops of rain during the morning. It was a bit warmer too with highs near 17 C.

Sunday, 29 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

A weak front lies through Ireland this morning, extending from Donegal Bay southeast into the midlands and south Leinster. The two air masses separated by this front are not all that different in potential temperatures, once the morning inversions are overcome, the warmer side of the front should see temperatures almost similar to those recorded yesterday (18-21 C) but those on the cooler northeast side will be more like 15 to 17 C. Also the front will be drifting south, and could generate one or two showers. So if you're in Munster, south Connacht or the inland southeast, expect increasing cloud from this front and perhaps a few light showers by afternoon especially closer to higher terrain in central counties. If you're on the cooler side it will likely remain partly cloudy, with just isolated showers. By tonight, this boundary will move faster and be followed by a mass of cloud from a disturbance dropping south out of the Norwegian Sea region towards Scotland. Some of this cloud will contain more organized shower activity which will lead to intermittent rain across Ulster, parts of Connacht, and Leinster, lasting into Monday. Temperatures will be in the range of 14 to 17 C. This disturbance loses a lot of its identity by Tuesday and its remnants will be located over Ulster and the north Irish Sea. A few more showers are likely in most areas as a result, with lows on Tuesday near 8 C and highs near 16 C.

By Wednesday, a weak ridge will be trying to build back in from the west and skies will be partly cloudy in most regions, with a few leftover isolated showers in the north. Lows near 6 C and highs near 18 C.

Thursday, a secondary disturbance drops down from the northwest and also begins to dissipate gradually over Ulster. There will likely be more cloud and showers in the north than elsewhere, and highs will range from near 15 C north to 19 C south.

From Friday to about Sunday (5th of June) higher pressure will probably succeed in re-establishing itself similar to the pleasant scenario for yesterday's weather, and temperatures will be back up into that same range of 18 to 22 C. This will perhaps be the end of an interval of minor blocking in the atmosphere and a more organized westerly flow will start to develop. The first signs of that will be a relatively strong frontal system moving through around Monday 6th of June, with perhaps some rather blustery showers and moderately strong westerly winds. From then on it looks like several weeks of "mobile" weather patterns meaning a few days of settled weather interrupted by one or two unsettled days as a general theme, with near normal temperatures.

My local weather on Saturday was once again overcast and cool (13 C), I don't believe we have even had fifty hours of sunshine here in May which is really quite remarkable given that the average must be around if not even above 200 hours. The temperature anomalies in the region are running something like 3 to 4 C deg below normal. One result of that is the snow pack still exists above 1500 metres, in fact you can still see snow on hills within two miles of my location although it has been gone here for two months now. Our deciduous trees are still not fully out into summer leafage, and it looks (and feels) about the same as it usually would in late April except for the gloom which is more similar to a typical late October or November weather pattern around here. Oh well, no doubt we will get hit by a heat wave eventually and then this pattern may seem a bit more appealing. No signs of much change here over the coming two weeks though. It hasn't been particularly wet and local stream runoff barely increased at all at any point after the "spring" began.

Monday, 30 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 30 May to 5 June --

-- Temperatures will average near normal, with a warming trend.

-- Rainfalls will average 50 to 75 per cent of normal, heaviest north.

-- Sunshine will average near normal despite a rather cloudy first two days.

-- Generally light to moderate winds, variable in direction.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be mostly cloudy with a few showers, heavier outbreaks of rain spreading south from Ulster into midlands and parts of Leinster, 5-15 mm possible there. Lesser amounts 2-5 mm in Munster. Highs 13-16 C.

TONIGHT will be overcast with showers, lows 7-9 C.

TUESDAY will be cloudy, showers continuing in some parts of Ulster and midlands, Leinster, with afternoon sunny intervals, more frequent in Munster. Highs 14-17 C.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny, with lows near 7 C and highs near 19 C.

THURSDAY will see some cloud and isolated showers in the north, partly cloudy to sunny further south, lows near 7 C and highs 17-19 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with isolated showers, lows near 7 C and highs near 18 C.

WEEKEND of 4-5 June will be sunny with cloudy intervals both days, on present guidance, and warm. Lows near 8 C and highs near 21 C.

By MONDAY 6th June, cloudy and windy with showers, highs near 18 C.

The balance of the following week will be variable with a few more passing showers or outbreaks of rain, with near average temperatures.

My local weather on Sunday was overcast although the sun was dimly visible at times, and reasonably mild with highs near 16 C.

Tuesday, 31 May, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for week of 31 May to 6 June 2022 --

-- Temperatures will average about 1.0 to 1.5 deg above normal, warming trend from slightly below normal today to 3-4 deg above at times by weekend, Monday.

-- Rainfalls 25 to 50 per cent of normal values, rather spotty and variable amounts.

-- Sunshine near average but some cloud in the mix most days.

-- Winds rather light in general, turning more easterly by weekend.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will be partly cloudy with some decent sunny intervals in Munster, occasional showers in Ulster and some parts of north Connacht, midlands, Leinster. Further amounts 1-3 mm for most, 5-10 mm in Northern Ireland counties and parts of north Donegal also. Highs will vary from 13-15 C north, to 16-19 C south.

TONIGHT will bring isolated showers ending by about midnight, partly cloudy to clear at times, cool. Lows 2 to 5 C in rural areas, 5 to 8 C near larger cities and coastal areas.

WEDNESDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny, with highs warming up a bit to 16-19 C.

THURSDAY will be overcast in the north with a few showers, highs near 15 C. The south will be partly cloudy, after lows near 7 C highs will reach about 18 C.

FRIDAY will be partly cloudy with a few passing showers, this time however the direction they travel will turn more to a northeast to southwest drift as winds become northeast 20-40 km/hr. Lows near 7 C and highs near 17 C.

SATURDAY will be rather cloudy at times across parts of the south with isolated showers possible in Waterford, Cork, Kerry and possibly nearby portions of other counties, due to a disturbance now expected to move past the south coast from east to west. This may have only limited effects further north than those south coastal counties, where longer sunny intervals are likely. Lows for all regions about 7 C and highs about 19 or 20 C.

SUNDAY will see fewer effects of the weakening offshore system and any remnant showers would be brief and likely most concentrated over hilly terrain in the southwest. Variable cloud to sunny skies at times elsewhere, rather warm. Lows near 8 C and highs near 21 C.

MONDAY will continue with partly cloudy skies, as blocking now seems to want to hang on several more days before the Atlantic gets invited back in. So another decent day likely with highs 20 to 23 C away from somewhat cooler coastal areas in light east to southeast winds.

There will eventually be a breakdown to a more disturbed weather pattern with the potential for heavier rainfalls later in the week of 6 to 10 June and beyond.

My local weather really improved to the extent that the Sun was dangerously close to aligning with large breaks in the overcast which drifted across the eastern and northern parts of the sky in a weak southeast flow. It was a bit warmer as a result with highs near 19 C.

Wednesday, 1 June, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS continue similar to previous days, near average temperatures slowly rising to 2-3 deg above normal, falling back by mid-week. Some further rain at times will amount to about 75 per cent of normal with some variations, and sunshine will be fairly close to average even though cloud will be present most days in some parts of the country. Light northerly to easterly winds will prevail, somewhat stronger southwest winds near mid-week at end of this interval.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will become partly cloudy where still overcast this morning, and some longer sunny intervals can be expected. Isolated showers may develop mostly near higher terrain. Highs 16 to 19 C.

TONIGHT will bring clear to partly cloudy skies. Lows 5 to 9 C.

THURSDAY expect increasing cloud (overcast to start in the north) and outbreaks of light rain, with a few heavier showers embedded, risk of an isolated thunderstorm. Some guidance shows heavy showers near Dublin at times by late afternoon or early evening. Highs 15 to 18 C.

FRIDAY will be cloudy with sunny breaks, and scattered showers. Lows near 7 C and highs 15 to 18 C.

SATURDAY rather cloudy across the south coast counties with chance of showers (heavier rain expected to stay out to sea), partly cloudy with some sunny intervals central and northern counties, lows generally 6 to 10 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy, any remnant shower activity brief and confined to hilly areas of the south, longer sunny intervals expected. Lows 8 to 11 C and highs 17 to 21 C.

MONDAY will be partly cloudy to sunny, with lows near 10 C and highs near 20 C.

By TUESDAY, increasing cloud, breezy with rain later, lasting into parts of WEDNESDAY, temperatures steady in the range 15 to 18 C.

My local weather improved to the point where blue skies could be seen in all directions by evening, after a mostly high-overcast sort of sky all day, and it got fairly warm as a result, with a high near 21 C.

Thursday, 2 June, 2022 ___ Forecasts for Ireland

TRENDS for the week of 2-8 June 2022 --

-- Temperatures will average near normal or slightly above in some areas.

-- Rainfalls will vary considerably but on average should turn out near normal, but locally heavy showers could yield a few local maxima of 150%.

-- Sunshine will have trouble keeping pace with the long-term average of 5-6 hours a day, but may end up just below that.

-- Winds generally rather light and after a period of easterly breezes, generally south to southwest next week.

    FORECASTS

TODAY will become mostly cloudy where not already overcast. Light rain will spread in from the northwest, slowly covering more of the country and also getting a bit heavier. Some quite heavy showers could develop around north Leinster with a tendency to drift south or southeast near, not necessarily right over greater Dublin. Where that happens, some local amounts of 15-30 mm are possible, otherwise, this appears to be generally a 5-10 mm rainfall although even lesser amounts likely in parts of west Munster and parts of Connacht. Rather cool with all the cloud, highs 15 to 17 C.

TONIGHT the light to moderate rain is likely to persist over parts of Leinster while tapering off to drizzle, mist and low cloud elsewhere. Some clearing could begin towards dawn in the west. Lows 9 to 12 C.

FRIDAY, remnants of the rainfall may drift around in the southeast, then spread back west later. Some central and northern districts will remain dry with occasional brighter intervals. Highs 15-17 C.

SATURDAY, rather cloudy across Munster and south Leinster, some chance of showers but mostly over higher ground in west Munster. Partly cloudy elsewhere with isolated showers, the best sunshine may be in parts of the midlands, south Ulster and inland Leinster. Lows near 10 C and highs 17 to 20 C.

SUNDAY will be partly cloudy with a few isolated showers, but a fairly dry day for most, with some sunny breaks. Rain could develop late in the day near the south coast, guidance a bit unclear on how far (if at all) this will spread inland during the evening. It should back off if it does spread inland towards midnight or the later overnight. Lows near 11 C and highs near 19 C.

MONDAY will be sunny with cloudy intervals, rather warm, lows near 10 C and highs near 21 C.

TUESDAY will bring moderate southwest winds, clouds and showers or outbreaks of rain. Lows near 10 C and highs near 18 C.

Further unsettled weather seems likely mid-week, then a few more settled days later in the week towards the following weekend; longer range there appears to be some potential for heavier rainfalls around mid-June.

My local weather on Wednesday was cloudy with some sunny breaks, and rather warm at about 24 C. Even so, there are still traces of snow visible as low as 1700m elevation nearby, and peaks in the 2100m range are fully covered. Our trees are just about finished with their full foliation now, something that usually happens by mid-May around here.
