Does make you wonder, if everything was in bits, why even open the doors to the public? How did they make any money?

I see in that article he noted that the Outrun wasn't for sale, wonder where that ended up?

They had slot machines in back, I'd say that kept them ticking over. The Outrun cab was actually working, I played it while I was there. It wasn't in great condition but it did work.

They kind of had two separate sections open. One with all the slot machines , a pool table and the working games. Outrun , point blank , superman in a Goliath I think and one or two others.

Then the other section where nothing worked. The coin pushers even while moving , didn’t have a single coin in them ! Afterburner the plane vanished off screen when you went left with the joystick ! 4 goliaths lined up where you could see nothing on screen the graphics where so messed up. Multiple games not even turned on. Honestly in that side , the larger side, absolutely nothing worked. It was still cool to see them though!

Wish I had gone there more often it's literally down the road from where my parents live. Sad to see the place gutted. They always had a good few weird games there you wouldn't see anywhere else. Discovered a lot of my favourite arcade games there. Raiden, Outzone, Konami Asterix, Shinobi, Neo Geo Double Dragon. Lots of childhood memories.

Big money yeah. Arcade club seem to do very well, and seem to be willing to pay a lot for cabs. There's been arguments for years over them being "anti-community" for pushing up prices by paying over the odds, but I disagree. It's up to them to pay whatever they want, and are doing a great service to the community for having the locations they have.

Outrun worked last time I played but monitor wasn't great, I dont think the steering was great too, I was told that and afterburner were already "sold" whatever that meant.

They had cabs on the floor, I would say 60% of them work but some had issues, a lot were off. When I went back the last time they had done a lot, took most of the cabs that weren't working off the floor and swapped them, made the place smaller while they were renovating one part.

There has to be cabs still there BTW, thinking now about the stuff I seen in the back, I doubt they are for sale and pretty sure I was told they're not, but the likes of Killer Instinct original, Sega Rally, Daytona, Scud deluxe 4p I think. Not sure if they got both championship sprints but the price of each was in the thousands I believe (and not working). Not as good of a game as Supersprint too. I'd say they'll put them out onto the floor next year and have probably kept some goliaths too. Red tent was about 2 grand and had screen burn I believe and issues.

They had hundreds of cabs, almost sure it'll be back open, don't think it was fully gutted.

As it stands now most are happy to see arcade club snap up these cabs as its saving rare cabs and more from destruction as everyone seems to benefit with A/C being open to the public , but when andy started snapping up all jamma cabs it was pretty much was "anti-community" and the opposite of what the forums where about ,they have mostly changed for the worse (i never was a huge fan of j+ and vac has changed drasticially ) , at that point though AC didn't exist so people were not happy about every cab being horded/snapped up , at least now that has eased off on std jamma cabs and people can buys cabs again and leave the expensive rare stuff for AC.:D

Hopefully it’s still there. I go there once every summer with the family. It’s a tradition at this stage.

The right side with sega rally twin, outrun, point blank, superman and vendetta is always open. It's open mainly used by people for the slots out the back. Outrun's coin slot is faulty and is a pain to get it to take your money.

It's only for a few months in the summer that the big right side opens up and the kid fun fair rides out the front.

    It's gone I'm afraid.

It was this summer, but when I went back in September that area was empty. Owner told me they are renovating it but not sure exactly what the plans are, nothing was in there and was sad to see, no poker/ slot or anything. Small shop was moved to the left side too.

interesting, I'll have to make a visit again soon to check it out. The building itself is probably worth a fortune for redevelopment with the amazing sea views. It's a lovely area to visit.

It is, skerries is a nice location, if I'm ever up around again I'll give it a visit, went up on a train once too and some amazing views, really nice day. I might post my photos later, some more stuff in those that people haven't seen. There was also a short movie shot there recently, I'll try remember the name of it.

I’ve a photo of myself and my brother on the mini Ferris wheel when I was five years old. 35 years later I’ve a photo of my kid and my brothers kid on the exact same Ferris wheel! It’s was like going back in time going there. I hope they open up again with whatever cabs they have left.

There are 8-10 I believe, I counted when there, I assume Arcade Club got a few. You'd need a forflilt to get one of those into a van with the weight of them!

Must have been, I was told "A few are interested".

Yeah, it's a pity most of the racers weren't for sale either, although we've 5 or 6 racers now at Level Up so we've probably enough :)

Are Nintendo planning on releasing any more mini consoles or what's the story? Unlike the NES and SNES minis already released, I would actually consider putting money down on an N64 mini because that console has always had questionable emulation.

Also, a Gameboy Classic would be class. I think that would sell like hotcakes especially if it had a selection of games preloaded, a slot for real cartridges, and a proper old school LCD screen with a switchable backlight for a classic or modern feel. Oh, and a link cable port.

And you'd think Nintendo would have the know-how to do what emulation has failed to with the N64. If all else fails, they could just copy the physical system architecture.

I'd say a GameBoy Classic is a definite possibility, though I'd happily consign those OG screens to the bin....they're horrendous to use. I always found the GameBoy experience was enhanced with the various different screen mods....not exactly original, but superior in every way. Nostalgia only takes you so far :o

N64 emulation is in the best shape it's ever been. There's very active development going on with more than one emulator. It's obviously got a ways to go before being considered 'perfect', but the myth that emulation has failed the N64 is completely untrue imo, certainly now more than ever. The simplicity now of installing a RetroArch core, configuring the settings the way you like them, saving them, and then just playing the games you want has made it easier than ever - it can be hardware intensive though, particularly the low level AngryLion gpu renderer, but it's the most hardware accurate N64 rendering there's been to date (so accurate in fact that I don't use it - I much prefer the renderers that allow you to crank the internal resolution - stock N64 graphics are really jarring these days).

That said, I'm sure Nintendo could do an N64 Mini...I wouldn't be hopeful of a shrunk down N64 though, I'd say that'd be pretty pricey to manufacture. An SOC approach, much like the other mini's, would be more likely - though it'd need to be significantly more powerful, and I doubt you'd be picking one up for €79. Ninty have dabbled in N64 emulation like the VC, so it's not as if they'd be starting from scratch.

One thing I'll say about the OG GB screen is that the nature of it means your eyes don't perceive the pixellation in the way they would with, say, a Game Gear. Gives games a timeless look because it was out of date even when it was new.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

An OG gameboy would probably do well alright.

I don't imagine Saturn/N64/DC mini consoles would be a viable project for a few years till the hardware required to emulate them gets cheap enough.

I'm sorely tempted to pull the trigger, again, on a Nuon...
But this one comes with no controllers and no Tempest 3000!
I'm pretty sure a USB controller can be hacked to work just fine with the Nuon, and the Nuon can run CDRs and DVDrs, but I can't find the right "files" anywhere.
I'm pretty happy talking about it as I don't think Nuon games have been for sale in a long, long time!
    Any advice out there?

I'd certainly consider it, drive down bringing a few with me in the car, drive back again in the evening.
But I would have to be off, so I'm limited to Saturdays really.

My shift is coming back on weekends so it will be the end of March before I have another free Saturday, but that gives time to figure out if people are interested.

I'm also happy to drive but only 2 others will fit in the Golf, not much room behind the driver seat for a long drive.

Pity it's later in March, Gamerfest is early March (7/8th) so Sparks would be around for that.

It's not being reported in most of the big games publications because, hey the next fortnite media crossover is more important than someone actually dying, but Kazuhisa Hashimoto has died.

He worked on the Gradius port to the NES and created the famous Konami code. He worked on loads of legendary games while at konami.

I'm shopping for a Nuon again...
And I've found an affordable one, in fact they are all affordable.
    But none have controllers!
Apparently, for no reason anyone can come up with, the controllers were all snapped up a number of years ago and now command higher prices than the machine itself!
Apparently there is a custom chip inside that means you can't use a third party hacked usb pad, you have to have the chip in the controller to handshake with the Nuon to work.
Someone, two years ago, perfected a rotary/digital controller that they sold but I'm not sure if they are still selling them, we shall see.
Certainly, a lot of trouble to go through to play Tempest 3000!

Premium stuff of course, 500 euro with shipping (then add in the customs screwjob).

Playing the original Doom on Switch with the great sale on at the moment that includes Doom 2 and 3.

Playing on the default difficulty, challenging enough on the first episode even though I played it many times before.

Still amazes, unbelievable that a 27 year old game holds up so well.

Of the 3 original episodes, the first is the most difficult due to the unavailability of the plasma weapons and the lack of rockets.
