Surely we won't see UTVi tests until possibly Oct/Nov at the earliest ?

I remember that TnaG started testing from Three Rock fairly early in 1996, probably around April or so. TV3 on the other hand only started testing 10 days before launch. I'd say that if we had a real UTVI test then you'd see a test transmission other than the 2RN card.

UTVI seem to be putting everything together fairly quickly so I wouln'd be surprised to see some tests beginning in the next two months or so. Especially if tbe carraige deal is done and dusted. It will give the techy guys in 2rn something to look forward too.

The Cush two things about Irish Broadcasting

    1. There has to be an indefinite amount of testing done
    2. You don't use specific dates like 1/1/15, nor do you use first quarters.
    3. You use vague seasons of the year that everyone in Ireland has a different view on.

    In this case

    UTV will begin next winter.

For some this might mean the start of winter e.g. November or December
Other it might mean the end of winter e.g. Feburary or March.

So UTV might start between 11/14 or 04/15 :pac:

    From the UTVI website
    30 May 2014

UTV Ireland will host a briefing session for independent production companies on Thursday 19 June, 2014 in Dublin to discuss the commissioning process for the new channel which goes on air on January 1, 2015.

The test pattern on LCN 11 is now showing up on my Samsung TVs as unhidden.

Is LCN 11 not on Mux 1?
Would it be better for UTVI to be on Mux 2 as there is more spare capacity?

They would be mad not to launch in HD.

I expect they will be doing playout from Belfast? They already have HD facilities there.

There's enough spare capacity on Mux1 for 2 SD channels and we don't know which format UTVI will use yet.

Last time I checked, there were two HD test cards and one SD.

I think all of RTE should move to mux1 and the rest to mux2.

Are you sure about those test cards ? My TV is showing two test cards, which appear to be SD ( my TV is HD and correctly flags Rte 1&2 as HD, but not those two test cards ) and the only other channel I see is just a blank silent screen.

    On Mux1 there are 2 SD testcards (LCN 11 & 17) and on Mux2 there are 2 HD testcards (LCN 12 & 14) and 2 SD testcards (LCN 13 & 15), all hidden.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 19,340 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sam Russell

Just checked. Ch 11 is SD, ch 12 is HD, ch 13 is SD, ch 14 is HD.

I do not know which mux they are on.

Edit: Yes the Cush is right, there are SD channels on 15 and 17.

So there is plenty of room for TV3 and UTVI to be HD, with room for TG4 as well.

The Cush is correct. 11 and 17 are on mux 1. The rest are on mux 2.

Any way of un hiding them ?

With Ireland as the install country the channels are flagged as hidden, if you use UK as the install country they will be unhidden but all channels will be stored in the 800s. To see a hidden channel simply key in the number manually on the r/c.

There's capacity for 2 SD channels on Mux1 and Oireachtas TV is an SD channel so no extra capacity required.

I turned on my Panasonic TV this morning and I got the message new channels found and to store the new channels do a rescan. When I did the rescan it showed 17 channels on Mux 1 and 17 channels on Mux 2. Numbers nine and ten can now be viewed if you use tne number keys I also have a number of hidden test channels that now go up to 34. Most of them have no video message and OTV test channel has moved to 21.

Thanks Cush for sorting out all tne LCN numbers on each Mux. I didn't think there were that many test channels left on each Mux. I thought maybe 8 or 9 on eah one. What are they going to put on them all? LCN 16 is also accessible by pressing the number keys.
