    LCN 12 will carry RTÉ2 +1 when/if it launches.
Will they need the ministers permission to launch it or can they launch a new channel without permission?

Don't know, it isn't a new channel as such but RTÉ1+1 did go through the previous process. On that occasion other new channels were also under consideration so maybe RTÉ1+1 were simply included for convenience.

I noticed that channel 12 on Saorview which is hidden was up to Monday saying no info available on epg which now says test transmission . this is a change as hidden channel 22 used to be the only one saying test transmission. Maybe something is coming here's hoping !!!!!
i think transmission guys are bored with channel listings lets move some around ,its shame that TG4 HD is on UPC its forth national broadcaster .If the minister had any interest in broadcasting in Ireland he should impose fines on the broadcaster that are not in HD on saorview that's the Irish way

With RTE1 +1 going on to the Sky platform soon will they extend its broadcasting hours I wonder? Why it doesn't broadcast right to up to the start time of RTE Jr is a mystery.

It shared space on Saorview with RTÉjr not sure if it still does. In the same way BBC4 shares with CBBC. RTÉ ONE +1 was to be replaced by RTÉ PLUS(aka THREE) but they did not get permission to do this. Any extension to +1 hours must be proposed by RTÉ to DCENR.

RTE +1 no longer shares a channel with RTE Jr but they only are allowed to broadcast during the same times as before.

    You're actually wrong there.

BBC Three shares it's channel with CBBC. BBC Four shares with Cbeebies.

    I do not think so.

The result of the SI is that the whole Saorview service is hog-tied. Comreg has set a pricing structure, which the Minister could require to be reset. This set the charging for Saorview based solely on bandwidth used. As a consequence of this, 2RN gets close on €12m a year whatever goes on.

Under the SI, RTE cannot gain anything in advertising revenue from two of their four channels, nor can they use the RTE 1+1 to introduce new or more interesting programming. This encourages RTE to be 'difficult' when it comes to Saorview, and despite the obvious benefit to all concerned, the regime of charging remains as does the burning off of the unused capacity.

The SI was introduced to benefit TV3 but now that UTVi has entered the platform, it is time to scrap the SI and reset the charging regime for Saorview.

I think that 2RN should be required to run and control Saorview as a seperate entity from RTE with 2RN taking over the multiplexing. They (2RN) should be allowed to adjust charges for new entry or changed format. This would allow incentives to get UTVi, TV3, and TG4 all to go HD at the same time.

I also think RTE should be assigned mux1 and the others moved to mux2.

Hi Sam, I have read quite a few of your posts and you really make alot of sense in what you're saying. You my friend should be the Minster for Communications and have this issue resolved. What is wrong with these people? do they listen or are they not been told. This is going on a long time now and getting tired of at this point.

Thank you for your kind words. It is for the reasons that you state that I could never be Minister for Communications. What is wrong with these people is that they never listen and do not wish to be told anything. I have tried contacting everyone I can think of but have got nowhere.

RTE are under political pressure and have always been - but sometimes they can shrug it off but more times the politicos can put them in a head lock and remove their wallets.
