Military & Defense More: Ukraine Protests Euromaidan Protests
LIVE: Police Move In On Protestors In Kiev

The anti-government protests in Ukraine are at their most violent point as at least nine people have died so far on Tuesday.

The police now seem to be trying to storm Independence Square, aka Maidan, where activists have been camping out and protesting en masse since early December.

They are being met with barrages of Molotav cocktails. Part of the encampment is on fire.

Previously, police have gathered around the square and clashed with protesters, but this time seems to be a more assertive effort. Earlier police asked women and children to leave Maidan so they can begin an "anti-terrorist operation."

Basically, things could get ugly tonight.

Here is a frequently updated live blog from The Interpreter.

It's a little after 21:00 in Kiev right now (14:00 EST).

Earlier the Ukrainian Berkut, the feared security apparatus of the state, gave protesters until 18:00 [11:00 EST] to end the demonstrations or face "tough measures." In response, the Right Sector, a radical far-right group, has called on protestors to start arming themselves.

The protests have become a struggle for the direction of the country and whether it stays within Moscow's orbit or moves toward integration with the EU.

Unconfirmed tweet says the Crimean parliament (internal Ukrainian region) has declared it so, but regardless of that it looks like it's getting close to one.

No, no and no. Absolutely not.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,532 ✭✭✭Lou.m

From what I can tell protestors have become radicalized. But some people believe that these are actually govt provocateurs who have acted to justify a govt crack down.

The protests began in late November after Yanukovych froze ties with the EU in exchange for a $15 billion bailout from Russia, but the political maneuvering continued and Moscow later suspended its payments. On Monday, however, while opposition leaders were meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Russia offered a fresh infusion of the billions of dollars that Ukraine needs to keep its ailing economy afloat.

But this seems to be about far more.

It seems to be difficult to get a straight story of examples of curtailing of civil rights. But the general idea is the Govt is full of gangsters according to protestors.

Whenever I hear them speak they tend to on about freedoms but not specifics.

    Propaganda war is well underway.

"5 Kanal is now available only online, live broadcasting has been completely shut down across the country" - Ukrainian TV presenter Artem Ovdiyenko on Facebook, quoted by BBC

BBC also quoting Russian ITAR-TASS as saying that the Canadian Embassy has been attacked.

Anyone know how Russia Today has been reporting this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,532 ✭✭✭Lou.m

From what I understand there is a huge tear in the country from east to west.

The East supports the govt more as it has strong economic ties with Russia and the West Has much more ties with the west.

Russia's finance minister offered to resume financial aid to Ukraine on Monday, just as Yanukovych was expected to nominate a new prime minister, prompting fears among the opposition that he would 'tap' a Russian-leaning loyalist.

The opposition demanded changes to the constitution and a new election. But so far nothing.

    Yup, screetags are saying:
Protesters break police lines and try to move on parliament.
Interior minister states protesters are using firearms.

Some others such as security being stepped up at parliament building but they are currently on a break.

I get the impression that pulling out of a trade agreement with the EU was an under the table condition of a Russian bailout and that people expect other conditions favorable to Russia.

Right Sector, a militant far-right group, added to tension by calling on people holding weapons to go to Independence Square, center of the revolt, to protect it from a possible offensive by security forces.

The Ukraine also has HUGE energy debts to RUSSIA and I mean HUGE.

This is how Russia is reporting it apparently.
As protesters and police battled on the streets of Kiev, Russia called the escalation a "direct result of connivance by Western politicians and European structures that have shut their eyes ... to the aggressive actions of radical forces".

It looks very near to complete breakdown. They are ordering women and children to leave the area. That is NEVER a good sign.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/ukraine/10639419/Vladimir-Putin-would-welcome-closer-ties-between-EU-and-Ukraine.html

This is what the Telegraph has to say:
Vladimir Putin said on Friday he would welcome closer economic ties between the European Union and Ukraine, in a move that may signal a way out of the crisis that has engulfed the country for the past two months.

The Russian president’s comments were relayed by German diplomats after a meeting between the country’s foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and Mr Putin in Moscow.
I don't know how genuine that is though.

I get the impression the EU is more popular in Ukraine than the US and perhaps Putin is trying to draw a line between publicly being against the US and the EU??

They might be using a recent event where there was a leaked phone call where an US diplomat dissed the EU saying the UN should handle the picking of a govt and ' F the EU'
In the recording, US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and US ambassador to Kiev, Geoff Pyatt, discuss frankly which opposition figures should go into the new Ukrainian government.

"That would be great I think to help glue this thing and have the UN glue it and you know, **** the EU," Nuland says.

Ukraine such a beautiful country. :-(

I don't want to just post updates from the newsfeeds for the sake of it, but this one via the BBC is noteworthy:

    Why?
Because of the fear of repercussion from the state that is meant to serve us?

I don't understand - the Ukraine protests were peaceful which that OP states as a method, fear of state escalation to violence doesn't negate the need for that protest.

Ireland is very pathetic in comparison. Trudge on, doff the cap, eat yer spuds.

Footage of the crowd attacking a lone police officer, knocking him unconscious and dragging his lifeless body away from police and into the crowd.

I presume he is the police officer who was murdered today.

Its time the Ukrainian government put a stop to this, no police force or armed forces would stand for that.
