What I did even using the redsnow app was I deleted as much as I could off the phone that wasnt Apple official, such as any cydia apps, hacks, and themes etc then I did a sync (and backup) in iTunes. After that I did the redsnow unlock/Jailbreak followed by a 'restore from backup' and sync in iTunes. It all went perfectly, I reloaded Cydia etc and I now have themes and some Cydia apps re-installed. This was on my 16gig 1st gen using an iMac.
It just seemed logical that an iTunes backup and restore was maybe going to be more problem free without stuff that wasn't official, and it's easy enough just to load it back on after the unlock procedure.

Yep, I tried backing it up again (after the whole restore and redsnow process) and the same thing happened so I just created a fresh profile. I lost all my text messages though.
For anyone else- if you have apps from the old installer app (jailbroken) then do not put them back on the iphone after updating to 3.0

Thanks to those who helped. 3.0 can be a little sluggish at times, mainly when skipping between tracks in the ipod unfortunately.

Anybody get this mail? Not sure if its a scam or not! Wouldnt my wifi need to be on for someone to ssh into my phone?

    Hi,

This is just a friendly warning. I noticed that you have a jailbroken iphone and it is in an insecure state. It potentially allows other people to remotely connect and control your device. This can include reading your emails, sms messages, contacts and also copying all of your pictures. I also use a jailbroken iphone and that is why I was able to "recognize" your's. I'm not sure how PC literate you are but here's a run down of the risk. When you jailbreak an Iphone, you install a service called ssh. This service is used to access the root file system of the device. When used properly, this is fine but the problem with your set up is that you haven't changed the default password on you ssh server. This means that anyone that can "recognize" an iphone online can damage your device. Everytime I find an iphone online in this state, I access the device and obtain the email address that has been set up by the user. This is only so I can warn them.

Here's what you need to do to fix it:

1 - Run "cydia" and install "mobileterminal" if you don't already have it.
2 - run "mobileterminal". In mobileterminal, run these commands. They will let you change you root password.
    3 - "su root"
    4 - "passwd"
5 - when it asks for the old password enter "alpine"
6 - now enter any password you want twice to confirm it.
    7 - "su mobile"
    8 - "passwd"
9 - when it asks for the old password enter "alpine"
10 - now enter any password you want twice to confirm it.
11 - That's it, the device will now be secure.

Sorry if this is an invasion of privacy but it could have been alot worse.

Ha I'm quite worried about it now! Never got anything like this when I jailbroke previous updates. My battery life seems to have got worse aswell since I installed 3.0

Or he could be the author of mobileterminal and will get ad revenue everytime anyone clicks on mobileterminal in cydia :P

Well what he writes is correct, whether or not he accessed your device I don't know, but it sounds like it. You don't need to install MobileTerminal, you can just ssh in from your PC with any ssh client. But MobileTerminal is a handy app, saurik the guy that developed Cydia is the developer for it as well. I use it to ssh into my mac mini (which is conntected to my TV without a keyboard or mouse) when I am too lazy to start my PC.

You really should change those passwords if you have openssh installed, especially the root password. And don't have it running when you don't need it!

I'm just after updating my first generation iPhone to the 3.0 software, but I think it's stuck? There's a picture of a cartoon dude saying something in Russian

You can check and see if it's installed, not sure if it's part of the default install. Have you cydia installed? If so have a look under, Manage -> Packages, and see if openssh is in the list.

I had a look and I don't have openssh installed but I do have openssl installed.

You should be ok. openssl is just a security protocol that applications can use from transmitting data securely, e.g. a browser would use ssl for communicating with an internet banking site, or a mail application would use it for sending your email user details to login and get your emails, and so on.

Strange one, never heard of anyone accessing devices just to warn people. Usually people who access devices in this way are up to no good. It wouldn't be too hard to access a device, especially when you are on a wireless LAN somewhere. He would just need to run a little script that would check for address's on the LAN where port 22 is open (that is where ssh runs). Fair play to the guy!

Fair play alright in the wrong hands the outcome could have been devastating. For the best part of a year open ssh has been running. I very rarely connect to wifi would it been possible for him to connect to my phone when I'm running 3g?

TBH I don't really know much about this side of things. I thought it wasn't possible to ssh over 3G and only over wifi but I could be wrong.

Don't know much either myself but it's gone now thank god. In the process of restoring the phone just in case anything malicious has been added to the directory.

That's what I thought aswell but doesn't look like it. I honestly can't remember the last time I had wifi on its always turned off and I definitely didn't have it on yesterday when I got that mail

I had to try this out and so I restored my old 3g (which is so frickin' slow now compared to the new beast) and jailbreaked (jailbroke?) it again. Openssh doesn't get installed automatically, you need to install it from Cydia. When I had it installed, I tried to ssh to it over 3g using Winscp and putty but neither would connect. So you must have had it connected to wifi at some stage?

Anyway, what he says is true, it's always a good idea to change the default root password on the iPhone. You don't have to install mobile terminal though.

(Assuming Openssh is already installed on the iPhone - to check, launch Cydia, tap manage, tap packages, it's under O...:D)

    1) Use putty to ssh to the iPhone's wifi ip address,
    2) Accept the warning about invalid certificates (or whatever it says)
    3) Login with the username root and the password alpine
    4) type su root
    5) type passwd
    6) input your new password
    7) input it again
    8) close putty

Just don't forget the new password! :)

I'm surprised there isn't a warning on it to change the password afet you install it.

Hey guys, Im having serious problems, I have a 1st gen, iphone, I bought online from at&t as soon as they came out, jailbroke it using ziphone with no problems, recently I upgraded to V3.0 through itunes, this updated and kept all settings except it just wasnt jailbroken, so yesterday I decided to try and jailbreak it and I havent been successful,

I've tried quickpwn, this runs through the process and looks like its working but the phone just brings back the plug into itunes screen on the iphone.

redsn0w is the same, it says waiting to reboot but doesnt when I reboot the phone manually it looks like it finishes but I get nothing.

    iLiberty just doesnt work.
and Ziphone just gives me an error,

been trying to get this working again for at least 6 hours yesterday, any ideas?

My battery life is absolutely woeful since 3.0- about 50% less than beforehand! What could possibly be sucking it up?
It also gets really hot, as reported by people here

Mine seems to be a bit slower, like a lot slower sometimes. I press menu and it takes a good few seconds to appear, very annoying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,246 ✭✭✭rc28

Apple clearly did not do enough testing on the old 2g/3g model before releasing this model. It isn't a jailbreaking issue either, most people are experiencing this.

I am just wondering all the guys that are having sluggish performance did you update or restore to 3.0?

I restored to 3.0 and find the performance to be good.

Mine was fine at first but has slowed up since

Why are you using quickpwn, iLiberty and Ziphone?! Aren't they outdated? I used this guide and had no trouble. Make sure NOT to install icy. Just cydia

I updated my 3g to 3.0 on release day with no problems.
I have since unlocked/jailbroke it using redsnow.
When I put the meteor sim card in it for my gf for the first time she could receive calls but couldnt hear them?
What was happening was when I ring her and she answers, the phone looks like it has answered but the timer for the length of the call doesnt move?
I restored it a few times and tried it again and again.
I finally got it working and it seemed fine.
Big problem is every now and again the service drops, sms cannot be sent and when you go to the list of carriers none appear in the list?
Has anyone got any idaes on this?
Is there another way to unlock it if I restore?
I sold my GF's phone so she is quite P'd off.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Sham.
