    Thor's an idiot

    The goats

    The hammer/axe/Thor love triangle (WTF!!!??)

The forced humour during actual emotional moments

The massive swing in tone between Bale's scenes and the Whacky Thor scenes

Lack of Gorr actually doing anything

They were what I found so off-putting about that film

    They're eating the DOGS!!!

Yeah a lot of it was just down to missed opportunity and not meeting expectations, because they nailed the formula with Ragnarok for most people. So with Phase 4 already having kicked off poorly, LaT needed to hit the mark (and should have) but just really didn't. It's not the worst (it's not even the worst Thor movie), but I can see why Hemsworth apologised for it. He clearly loves the improv and comedy side of things, and it's definitely one of his strong points, so him and Waititi teaming up again should have made it the easiest thing in the world, but they both just lost the run of themselves and got carried away.

The goats was such an annoyingly pointless element and about 5 years too late to be funny or relevant.

Apparently Taika Waititi had only seen the video for the first time while writing it and loved it so much he thought he had to include it, he thought wrong.

I don't think the apology really changes anything and I didn't realise there was any real outcry over it.

That said, I forgot just how good Christian Bale was in it and it's tragic that he's undermined by the way it was structured.

    Zeus was a disaster.

The deleted scenes from the film were better than 90% of the scenes left in.

Crowe (at least his deleted version) and Bale were both from completely different movies to Love and Thunder.

Plus Janes cancer plot was drowning aimlessly surrounded by weak comedy scenes.

    Tonally it was a disaster.

I have to say, the screams of the goats was funny at first, then less funny, then a bit annoying, then very annoying every time after that.

Until they faceplant into the shadow planet and there's a bit of a pause and then they scream…. that made the whole thing worth it for me. It went all the way around to being funny again imo. That little comedic pause just tipped it back into being worth it.

I thought Zeus was funny but it turns out Marvel's Zeus is a god in both terms of the word, able to stand against the likes of Thanos and the Hulk.

If the movie had come out in 2015 maybe it would have still been funny but to call back to a meme from 2013 was just overkill and added to the overused comedic elements of the film.

It had such potential after coming off the unexpected success of Ragnarok but just didn't stick the landing and seems that the actors have realised it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,029 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

I wonder if Hemsworth is taking the blame simply to keep in Waititi's good books cause any things like stealing lines falls on Waititi for lack of oversight. Plus Waititi still is potentially a very good comedy director to want to work with in the future.

I felt like Waititi should have gone straight to directors jail after Love and Thunder. It was a truly appalling film. He had no control on the tone whatsoever. Bales scenes felt like they were from a completely different movie.

After watching the film, I went and read the Jane Thor and Godbutcher runs in the comic. Each had a massive arc devoted to them and it did a disservice to both to try and mash them together in one movie. Watching the movie felt like Taika had zero interest in the story and no respect or love for the characters. Thor started out as a bit of a blowhard buffoon, but it was painful to see him revert back even further after so many movies and so much progression up to that point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I don't think Hemsworth is necessarily taking the blame, just acknowledging his own failures with it and them collectively letting it get out of hand. Waititi has already said he won't be doing another Thor film as he has too many other commitments for the next few years, so it's not like Hemsworth needs to try protect him either. I think they all acknowledge they pretty much just had more fun on the set than people did watching the film.

exactly. they move on, as the fans have to.

Some bits were brilliant, some bits were a disaster.

Personally, the bit about "your arm is probably in Valhalla", floored me.

Marvel Will Release No More Than Three Movies and Two Shows Per Year, Bob Iger Says

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,291 ✭✭✭The White Wolf

What a non committal bullshitty statement from Iger, as bar the backlog release from covid in 2021 this is what they've been doing in 2022 and 2023. The only marginal difference is that he's scratching one less D+ show off the books.

While that's true, it's also the case that they had planned for more movies and shows, with a huge slate of them announced or being rammed into pre-production. But it was production issues (not just covid related) and tepid response to movies and shows that meant they had to pull back from their original plans. The goose no longer seemed to be laying golden eggs. At least now with this announcement it seems like they're not going to be trying to go full bore again and will take a bit more time.

Won’t change much the brand has suffered massive damage they need to move away from the multiverse but that’s not happening any time soon

I feel like the descent began when they thought people would pay for Disney Plus so they could do their homework in order to watch the films at the cinema. That was never going to work, especially once Endgame had finished its run.

I just don't get where the multi-verse hate is coming from?

    Loki was loved - multi-verse.
Deadpool is getting great hype - multi-verse.
    Spider-Man: No Way Home - loved/succesful - mutli-verse (nostalgia tbf)

Eternals - no multiverse. Didn't do well iirc
Shang-Chi - no multiverse. Didn't do well (domestically) iirc
Marvels - kinda mutiverse, a little, at the end? Didn't do well.
Thor: Love and Thunder - was there any multi-verse in that? I don't remember there being so.

Ant-Man: Quantumania had Kang, so multiverse, but the story itself didn't really touch on that IIRC.

The problem, imo, isn't multiverse, its poor damned movies with (percieved) poor CGI.

The problem is quality, not theme.

It seems to be all they have at the moment. It's getting a bit much. Dr. Strange 2 wasn't great. Heck, I'd say abysmal as someone who didn't do the premium homework before going to see it.

Deadpool doesn't count. He's always been an irrelevant destroyer of the fourth wall and No Way Home was a beautifully crafted stroll down memory lane. Those are two dreadful examples. Tying the multiverse to weak films isn't going to endear the concept to anyone.

But thats my point. they are weak films.

Multiverse didn't make them weak. IMO the multiverse element of Strange was the best part of it. Without the Council cameos and fight that movie is a lot less enjoyable imo.

They are making rushed, poorly executed movies. Dropping the multiverse angle isn't going to have changed that, or caused it.

I would moderately disagree. I don't have Disney Plus so I just see what's at the cinema and the multiverse itself adds absolutely nothing of interest IMO. Saying it's the best part of Strange 2 is like saying a headache is the best form of illness.

Shang-Chi is probably the best of that lot atm. Loki was overall overrated imho. So the multiverse might be absent from much of these but that's part of it's failure, that overall failure to build up to a bigger bad etc. Instead we had an inconsistent villain that nobody really cares about which is central to the multiverse issue.

Never mind Malkovich, Holy **** that's some choice for Galactus! He's a fantastically intimidating actor with massive presence.

In all seriousness on Malkovich, I wonder if they'd have the balls to make him Doom. He'd certainly have the distinct and clear voice that they'd need, while at this stage in his career I can't see him having a problem being behind a mask.

Let's hope he keeps his accent for Galactus. Can't see much reason to go to the cinema if they don't.

With a voice like that I don't even think he can do a different accent, or why you'd hire him if you didn't want to sound like that. He's a great choice for Galactus.

They had him doing a terrible Irish accent in The First Omen… It kept slipping so I'd say it will be his normal accent thankfully.

Good character but no. She basically became an internet sensation and got a show because of it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I don't think anyone wanted it, and it was announced and started in that phase where Disney+ were just announcing new and spin-off shows all the time.

But, Kathryn Hahn is a great comedic and dramatic actor, they have a good supporting cast, and as skeptical as I am, it might be decent.

She was in WandaVision. Since it was the first Disney+ MCU show and she was a popular character from it, a spin-off for her was quickly announced and has been in the works for a while.

She was good in Into The Spider-Verse as Doctor Ock but honestly it's been way too long since Wandavision and too much has happened for this to be something to be excited about.

They've somehow made the characters even more meaningless which is almost an accomplishment. If one dies, they can be replaced by another one that's almost identical.

Disney+ character in WandaVision but, to be fair, she's not exactly unknown in comics.

It's the only reason I don't like Spider Gwen and Miles Morales etc. and why I really dislike The Flash (in nearly all media)

Spiderman/Flash is meant to be this one of a kind and throughout their run their uniqueness was completely diluted by having a Spider-Family and a Flash Family (and many of his villains also being speedsters)

It does kind of follow the same trend as comics, where they'll kill off a character and a different character will take up their mantle and become a new version of that hero.

The issue always is though; it's not the powers, but the character themselves that fans miss. So the original character always ends up coming back and their replacement becomes a new variation or new similar-powers hero but effectively gets demoted back down to sidekick or supporting character.

Can't do that as much in movies though, because actors will age out or decide to move on from the movies.

Ironheart was fine in Wakanda Forever, but not that interesting. A whole series about her, probably the one I'm least interested in even compared to Agatha All Along, and especially Daredevil. If anything I'm more interested in whether or not it's still going to act as a precursor to Armor Wars.

One of the cascading effects of the (sensible!) decision to dial down on output means a lot of setup is now taking even longer to pay off. All these shows were set up like two to four years ago at this point, and it feels like they've been in production forever (especially in the case of Daredevil and Agatha, albeit with extenuating circumstances in the case of the former). Much like the films, it could now be upwards of four / five years before characters introduced return.

I think there'll be a weird few years before the films and shows themselves actually reflect that slowed pace. In the meantime, it's going to take bloody ages for a lot of characters to show up again - and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the post-credit teases from the last batch of films are never followed up on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,477 ✭✭✭✭Penn

That was a big issue I've had with Phase 4. So many of the end-credits scenes, and even characters showing up in small roles because Marvel had future plans for them (eg. Kit Harrington in Eternals, Julie Louis Dreyfus in everything), felt like they were setting things up so far in the future that there was no real plan. Just "Let's cast Harry Styles as Thanos' brother, and f*ck it, we'll figure out what to do with it later".

Just cast currently-popular actors in roles to tie them down and hint at something, then figure out if you even want to do that something with the actor/character later. So yeah, chances are a lot of things they've set up in the various films and shows, might never be paid off at this stage.

At the very least though they've gotten the message and are slowing down a bit, and not just announcing shows, then spin-offs from the shows, then shows which might set up something if they go ahead with it etc.
