Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Not a contender for bangernomics bargain of the year but a cool little car nonetheless. I'd love this

A user asked about an Alfa 159 not so long ago but I can't find the post, at least I think it was in this thread anyway....
There seemed to be a consensus that there was a petrol engine to avoid, which one was it?

A smidge over Bangernomics limit, but you'd get it under. This is nice, shame the interior lets it down, in my opinion. Still, maybe I could live with it?!

I bought a lovely 98 or 99 black cynos about five years ago in Chapelizod for 200 quid. They’re a lovely little car.

There's a five year gap between tests from 2016 to 2021. I don't think it means much, seeing as it has a test now, but it would be nice to know the reason.

Just going by the pictures, it looks like the bodywork might have a bits that need doing if you wanted it perfect - Passenger door anyway, drivers side front arch. Might be some rust or a previous repair that wasn't the best on the drivers side rear arch, it is a 15 year old car after all.

I know nothing about the engine, that's why I asked in the original post. Anyone have and insights into the petrol engines in a 159?

Interesting car, I'd love it, but I've a 15 month old who would destroy that interior!

I dislike ads that don't have the reg plate, and this seller went out of its way to not show the reg plate. So this & being off the road for at least 3 years are just red flags to me.

So 30k since test in 2014, test in 2016, and then some issue which caused the car to sit up for a few years until they could fix it? I wonder what said issue was?

Thankfully. The sooner them and the horrible cheap 3rd world Micras are gone from the roads the better. A hateful car if ever there was any. 800 is way to much for that. It should be in the bargain 500 euro thread because it's not worth anymore than that.

Despite what I've read about them reliability wise, I cant help like this 407 priced at €975

    New NCT until 5/22
    More reliable 2.0hdi
    Cheap tax at €400
Heated leather, cruise. Think these high spec UK ones came with sat nav and xenons too.

Boot looks like its had a knock? Anyway, a nice yoke to cruise along at 120km/h

I dunno what history you have with them to say they offend you so much, but I had a 06 ST diesel hatch version that I loved :)

I always had a soft spot for Mondeos until the Mk4 came along. The Mk3 is so unloved now but I'd definitely have one. Hoards of them took dogs abuse in the Garda fleet.

Speaking of which, didn't the Garda have a few Platinum spec ones in 07? The one posted by Bazz had the look of an ex Garda car about it, with its 4 digit D reg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,097 ✭✭✭johndaman66

I'd agree that them Mondeo's were far from the worst cars on the road at the time. No doubt there was better than them but they were far from the worst. If you want to look at the same class alone, the P12 Primera, Laguna II or Vectra C wouldn't have being a patch on it.

Brother had a 2001 1.8 and 2005 ST diesel Mondeos. Nice balanced and comfy drives for what they were I thought. Dated now no doubt but for their time they were hardly the worst looking car on the road. I say all this without being the biggest Ford fan ever.

Ya, the last 3 months is always a concern.
But there can be valid reasons too, phone and ask how long they have had it and why selling.

Give it a good test drive, check clutch, and let idle to overheat/fan on etc and you should be fine.

I'm also looking on a phone and can see it. Picture 6, zoom in towards the wheel and its plainly obvious.

Also, in the ad he says it will be a classic in 3 and a half years. Not sure why he would bother mentioning it.

Tbh, I just don't like the ad, cant quite put my finger on why, but I wouldn't even bother with it because I dont like it.

Yeah, I understand that. If it was 20 this year, I'd see the relevance. Just don't get why you'd mention it when its 3 years away from being valid.

Trying too hard to sell it which makes me think that there are issues.

    Cheap(er) insurance as it's 20 years old
It will get more difficult with time to insurance this as a primary car.
So worse insurance options with age.

It's only cheaper if used as a second car so you would need full insurance on a another car to avail of classic insurance.

Your right the Laguna II made the MK III mondeo look old. The Laguna II not only looked better but was technacly far more advanced than that Mondeo as well and a much nicer place to be inside than the Mondeo. Yes ok the Laguna II could have done with been built better but there is still a few around
I think half of ye Mondeo Lovers in here must be farmers because that Mondeo really was a farm car.

I don't know about that but i owned a 02 1.8 petrol one for a while, i bought it off its first owner a mechanic that worked at abernathys. It had 92,000 miles. Was just after getting new piston rings according to the service history. The swirl flaps were removed by the previous owner because of a known fault.

it was nice to drive surprisingly economical but my god it continually fell apart, sticky brake calipers, bushings, fuel pump, alarm + immobiliser issues. List goes on but when the timing chain started to rattle that was it got rid.

The diesel version much better performance wise but id struggle to buy one even as a stop gap!

Át the time, both Honest John (the non farmer) and Parkers (urban cousins of Parker's the farmers) both recommended it as best buy in its class.
You're really really far off the mark here. In petrol, that Mondeo was practically a perfect car.

Suspension on the Mondeo was brilliant, the 2.0 petrol was a quick car even without a turbo, the diesel was very heavy on the front but still a very good handling car, I have a 2005 one sitting up, new starter fitted, then fuel pump went, still starts etc....

I'd a 2.0 petrol one , bought it for €450, ran it for 3years, had to replace Alternator and water pump, front discs warped every 6months but we're cheap to replace, replaced it with a Tucson that cost ten times as much and gave bother daily

Looks a bit abused, are the panel gaps on the rear tail a bit too big? Skanger-ish looks will suit some.
