That corolla is absolutely class. I'd love to have it.

Typically what's the most reliable brand in the bangernomics category? I need to pick up something soon and have no clue about cars

Soulless though, Renault 18 was a pretty car in its day, the 5Turbo was mad fun and the Renault 4 was quirky and unbelievably useful, same would apply to PSA new French stuff does nothing for me

Sure most new cars these days are soulless. You would hardly say a VW Golf or Passat have a soul because they certainly do not or a Toyota C-HR or Rav-4 either.
Renault do still make a car with character and soul the Alpine A110.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I would not call it class. Its bug eyed ugly. It's like like a cheap camper from the side and the rear has elements in the lights of the Fiat Merea weekend estate so a mish mash of design and then there is that cheap plasticky dash and interior. Sure it will last and is in good nick but classy no way miles away from been class. A Megane was a nicer place to be back then or an Octavia even.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

No, it's actually pretty cool in it's own right, you just don't appreciate it.

that diesel has something like 74bhp.

Though I will say, having used one for years, I ran out of fuel outside a lidl, and bet you can guess the answer:cool:

The answer is none of the answered. Well, sorta.

The answer is a petrol. Then a Japanese.

Lads, it's a €450 car with 8 months NCT. Obviously would need to be given the once over by someone who knows what to look out for but at this end of the market if it drives straight, stops, isn't overheating or has any liquids leaking out of it then it's cheap motoring imo.

Theyre actually still a very nice looking car. The subsequent redesign with big ugly headlights ruined the sleek look.

If this is half as nice as the seller thinks it is, then it’s worth a go

This is all the money for a 1.8 Civic, but it’s low owners, low mileage and good spec.

Lads, I'm also looking for a bit of advice.
My daughter is buying her first car, has to be an automatic, nissan micras is her first choice.
Is there anything in particular that goes wrong with them that I should look out.
    Probably an 07 to 2011

There is a heap of stuff to like about those 1.8 Civics. Was very sad when told the pano roof didn't open ( deal breaker for me ) .

    50k miles in 15 years on the Alfa.....hmmmmm !

Unless there's a particular reason it has to be automatic, I'd suggest a manual for 1st car. Much easier to go auto from manual than trying to learn how to drive a manual after driving auto.

Ye I think Renault were trying to make it look classier in the revamp and it did take a while to get used to but I don't mind them now. The MK III fixed it anyway by being even classier .

Yes, well aware. That's why I said unless theres a particular reason.

Edit: I only mention it because some people think it's easier to start in an auto but that only works if you plan on using auto for life imho. If theres a reason it has to be auto, that's the posters own business, I was just making a suggestion to save them having to learn how to drive a manual in future.

The seller states he will put more pictures up.

I think he is trying to convince potential buyer it is 50k miles car ;)

Right didn't read the description, I just looked at pics and was a bit disappointed that there was only technically one.

Reliable, but importantly they have a traditional torque converter gearbox, so it will be smooth and easy to drive.

A lot of cars in that class have automated manual boxes which are a disaster.

Thanks, exactly the kind of info I'm looking for, I'll try to steer her in the right direction but she could just as easy pick a car because of its colour, didnt we all at that age

    Hi, guys
    Let me get this straight
I see lots of old cars (and reasonable cheap) being discussed, but what about insurance?
Last time I quoted for a bangernomic I got a surprising €1000 for a €3000 cars! Not to mention that the vast majority of the insurance companies immediately refused to provide a quotation...
How do you deal with this?

Some get away as such if say have 6 months left, others if old enough get on classic policy as have other car insurance already.

Some are not quoting nuts either in some cases.

350 quid a year for my banger 03 Corolla, 10 years NCB on my own name, 4 years NCB on my parents car before that. First time on my own was 1100 on a 1 litre micra.

Circumstances has a lot to do with it. Age, location, driving history.

What one terms as class is a personal thing.

The things you don't like are precisely what attracts others to the thing.

I STILL miss the Daihatsu Fourtrack my farmer brother used to own.

Even though objectively it was terrible to drive.

Cars and our reaction to them aren't based on logic a lot of the time

NCT 18 months out (since Oct 2019) and hasn't been taxed for 2 years doesn't look good.

If you don't mind the 120km range, you'd get a gen 1 leaf for around €4000, very little to go wrong on them and the insurance is really cheap for a new driver. Just make sure the battery is good on an early one.

Maybe they just don't drive it on the road any more so did not bother. It looks like it could be a farm house.
I would also say there is room there to bargain. Maybe if someone offered them a grand they would take it.

That Rexton is no bargain @ 2k. It's 15 years old and has no NCT. I also doubt someone who actually thinks it's worth 2k would listen to an offer of half that.

Even if it had a current NCT it still belongs in the dreamer's thread rather than this thread.

No test, doesn't qualify for this thread, anyway I think Nickey is smoking some very strong stuff to be asking 2k for that junker...

It's Nickey's Garage. Looks like a dealer and a scrappy one at that. I see no evidence of a farmhouse. No NCT, and... it's a Kyron. Which is why he has no full picture of it as he'd have to replace the camera.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,508 ✭✭✭KevRossi

NCT to 01/22, done a month ago. €1650. 2.0 petrol, manual.

Cheapish, clean and usually very reliable convertible for holidays at home this year. On the basis we might be going nowhere for the summer it might be a decent 2nd car for the next 6 months. It's not quite 20 years old but a broker should be able to get cheaper insurance on it as a 2nd car. Needs a minor fix on the window.

2.4 S40 with NCT til February 2022 and tax til June, 1 previous owner, €900.

I've bought a few cars from this seller before, not the kind of place Joe Soap will wander in and buy his next family car from, but I've always had good dealings and bought some decent cars too. Very tempted to pick this up for when I'm home next month
