Level 5 or no level 5 the elephant in the room is the schools and the colleges.

So shut down rural pubs and businesses that contribute little or nothing to new cases.

But leave open colleges where all the house parties are happening.

Even the Swedes had the sense to close colleges during the peak.

Thursday morning had 122 in hospital and 20 in ICU.

Increase of 28 and 1 hardly the need to have every county jump from level 2 to 5.

Yes and those people got infected 10-14 days ago. Maybe even longer.

We have 2300 infections in the past 5 days with the growth rate increasing.

150 confirmed cases in hospital 15 admission in the last 24 hours.

The situation has obviously rapidly deteriorated since Thursday. We have had about 2300 cases in the past 5 days, approaching a 500 a day average.

I imagine 50-50 if we get a briefing this evening.

    Huge increase, no denying that.

So... 6 months on we've learned that 95% of those who died had underlying medical conditions...and 93% were over 65 years old...

This virus has killed 126 "under 65 year olds" (may they rest in peace). Cancer kills that many people in FIVE DAYS!!!

But.. lets just properly DESTROY the whole bloody country once and for all.

Because, F0çK knows... we did shag all to improve our shambolic healthcare system in those 6 months.

Poster boy/girl New Zealand 'defeats' the virus again..

It's like telling all your mates you are having the time of your life living in the panic room in the basement of your house.

In a depressing day, this made me laugh

6 months on and people still haven't learned that deaths are not the primary concern.

I'm struggling to see how schools would be able to remain open if serious about suppression.

One thing is for certain things can't stay as they are. The situation accelerates due to lack of sufficient counter measures and enforcement.

    https://twitter.com/newschambers/status/1313040225124470785

This is not all a governance problem. There are a small minority in this country who have behaved recklessly and not followed the rules. People are right to call them out but we need enforcement.

Yeah, I'm finding that weird. Even if not a disaster, it will keep a certain amount of transmission going.

There is a mid-term coming up. Perhaps they could extend it a bit so it would be 2 weeks of level 5 and then another 2 weeks of level 5 but with schools closed.

An underlying condition does not imply a terminal underlying condition. Diabetes is an underlying condition.

the narrative from these people is that all the deaths were from people that would have died in a few days anyway. that's how they convince themselves COVID is not a problem. delusion of the highest order.

Make that 30 years. Not a whole lot that could be done with a behemoth like the HSE in that time apart from crisis management. Problems stretch far and wide in it and a lot of them are not money but they do have a surge/contingency plan.

Close the wet schools and just leave the schools that serve food open?

That option was tried and is not having the desired effect so a minimum level 4 on a countrywide basis is necessary unfortunately mainly due to the fcukwits.

Level 4 won't stop f@ckwits. Only destroys economy. Transmission is in family homes. No level is going to stop that.

Had they recommended immediate changes to Levels 3 & 4 with a warning that further measures might be needed soon, the conversation would be different. Instead they caught everyone on the hop with a Level 5 plan for four weeks on a Sunday evening. Very badly handled.

But why would you even want to? It’s so scary out there,

Bit of perspective please, this kind of hyperbole does no one any favours.

Yes, caution should be paramount but caution should be wearing your mask and keeping your distance and not travelling unnecessarily.

We can do everything online, even our jobs. We don’t have to leave our houses guys,

No, we cant, there are some industries SMEs and sectors that will be decimated by a L4 not to mention a L5.

LOL. Not since the nationwide lockdown lifted we haven't. Its everyone out for themselves now, evident by the numbers an blatant disregard for the guidelines we see everywhere every day.

*Sigh* Once more onto the breach...

Lockdowns are not about preventing deaths. Lockdowns are not about preventing ICU admissions. Lockdowns are about reducing hospital admissions.

    Repeat ad nauseum.

Does anyone know what our ICU and hospital bed capacity at the moment is? There used to be a useful infographic that showed available covid beds with how many of them are currently occupied. They don't seem to publish that infographic anymore.

Also, does anyone know whether we still have an additional surge capacity in ICU/hospital beds or is that only available if we shut down the remainder of the health system like we did in March?

So you don't think keeping people at home and stopping visits between homes will stop transmission in homes? Okay....

    Toddlers my arse.

More like adults asking questions like why the government/HSE/NPHET haven't prepared for the INEVITABLE second wave.

ICU capacity now appears to be lower than in April.

The City West facility was decommissioned even though everyone knew what was coming.

Now they've been caught out with an unexpected rise (they seem not to have expected it), haven't prepared properly and need to shut everything down.

    Its a shambles.
