We not taking the Mick but we have gone to places outside the 5k for walks in parks together as a family only foursome.. what I'm unsure of is if the 5k is as the crow flies or roads... As the crow flies probably haven't gone more than 5k by roads probably 5 to 10.. we have family in the northwest and we are in Dublin..don't think we will see them in person till there's a vaccine..

We weren't far off - we very rapidly had 150 people in ICU beds with Covid (mid April was the peak I think). The restrictions that started in March were just in time, another week or two and we'd have been in trouble and would have needed all the ICU beds we could find/create.

And what was specifically filling those ICU beds? It wasn’t joe public but nursing homes - same environments they completely dropped the ball on with precautions. Cause and effect - the public were never by majority part of this increase but the increase came from a cock eyed handling of the institutions that were getting hit the worst.

I know the one you're talking about, and it has been spun by conspiracy websites as somehow proof that this is no more dangerous than flu. The CDC paper was a modelling paper modelling various scenarios. All the scenarios took into account actions by the population in response to Covid - i.e. their fatality rate is based on certain levels of restrictions and voluntary social distancing being in place. It was not based on unchecked spread/"herd immunity" of the virus.

New York has 16,000 Covid deaths, and antibody tests suggest no more than 20% of the population were infected.

New York city had 2,000 flu deaths in 2018.

This is a good breakdown of ICU cases, and their age range:
    https://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/respiratory/coronavirus/novelcoronavirus/casesinireland/epidemiologyofcovid-19inireland/COVID-19%20Daily%20epidemiology%20report%20(NPHET)%20v1_website.pdf

The majority (119) were aged 55 to 64. There were 139 under 55 in ICU.

Ok so there’s start of it - 139 out 4.9 million. What was the total ICU number during the duration? It’s easy to be shocked at headline figures without looking at the wider number they are out of.

We only had that number because we introduced restrictions. That's 139 out of 408 total (at the time of the report) btw.

Ah the End of The Logic is back to pontificate again...join the curtain twitchers pal and stay indoors and terrified until uncle tony tells you otherwise. Nothing i can say will change your mind and I couldn’t be arsed to anyway - some of us see the bigger picture and know the wheels have to restart now, not August.

I have largely stayed compliant. I will argue against but I am a good citizen.

But if there is a travel ban in place at the beginning of July from Covid free zones and our numbers are still very low I will be disgusted.

We have fairly strictly stuck with "The Rules".
We live on a main road so no kids outside playing in communal areas to contend with.
We have stuck to the 2km/5km.
Our Kids have not met up with friends.
We were invited to 2 different BBQs by friends. Said no to both.
I want to see my elderly mother and my sister both with underlying health conditions but they live much further than even 20km from here.
So we will wait and stick to "The Rules" and hope for the best.

Isn't it? There's not a whole lot more to do out there than there is at home.
I have books, music and food at home. I can work from home. All I'm missing out on is queuing in shops or crowded beaches, garden centres or hardware stores. Hardly the staples of "living".
But I do know that if any of my immediate family get it, they're done for due to respiratory illnesses. Once I see no new cases for 20 days, I might begin to think differently.

And what if there’s no vaccine?

Don't know.. will have to see how it plays out. Just don't want to be the one accused of bringing the virus down from Dublin and making parents or elderly relations sick... There's strong chance we might do a day trip in August maybe sit out in the garden and have lunch and chat for a few hours.

which is great, and is one thing allowing us to reopen in a responsible manner.

Hosted a BBQ on Saturday at our place and went to another one yesterday. Great to meet up with people again.

Anyone who's still living in a fear-cave and listening to Uncle Tony at this stage, needs their head examined.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/ireland/ . given the reuters article and the graphs from worldofmeters, it seems fairly evident that this thing has largely passed by. I'd still be cautious if I was elderly or visiting elderly or vunerable people

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,809 ✭✭✭Hector Savage

wow, and thats Reuters, wouldn't usually be known for the sensationalism ... still though, I will be cautiously optimistic.

These next few weeks will be crucial - especially here in Spain , the amount of packed terraces I see and beer drinking, yapping ... PERO BUENO ..... if no spikes are seen in the next few weeks, lets see ...

pretty much ignoring the 5km limit for excercise but dont really need to go outside the 5km for any shopping or other purchase, office still closed but have a lot of work piling up i need to get doing in there but cant do that until uk office goes back.

supporting local takeaways and restaurants where i can ! :D ( oh the hardship)

didnt see any checkpoints when out on sunday, local beaches were closed but the amount of rubbish left on them i think a lot of people ignored the restrictions. just lazy form the council instead of trying to manage it they close the biggest open spaces we have in the north west on the hottest days we have had in years.

That's quite something. Hopefully, the journalistic geniuses running our various newsrooms will have their Reuters feed turned on and will put it to some use in challenging our unique collection of lockdown hardliners.

It will make a change from their role thus far as state megaphone departments.

This one is killing me too. I have an elderly mother about 160km away who lives alone.

Really at this stage it is becoming an essential journey to go to see her - with proper precautions of course - but yanno golf and hairdressing is more important.

Looking after elderly parents is an essential journey, and it sounds like you are clued in about protecting your mother by keeping your distance etc. I wouldn't worry about doing a trip like that myself.

It's the people taking the p**s hosting and visiting house-parties who need to cop on to themselves.

It's the people who as you describe as "taking the piss" are testing the water for the more conservative people.
Personally i think the extent is somewhat overstated but it is happening - and the infection rate is dropping.
Statler and Waldorf were on again about "Facemasks" as "nobody is wearing them and its time to make using them mandatory for everyone, everywhere".

Again it seems to escape their attention that in spite of the absence of facemasks and the people "taking the piss", the infection rate is dropping.

It's taking the p**s when you're deliberately giving two fingers to the rest of society.

If you're genuinely concerned about something even though it maybe skirts the law that's one thing, such as visiting elderly relatives - but no-one needs to hold a house-party or a barbecue with all the neighbours.

Wouldn’t go holding mass parties although as soon as the restaurants open I’ll be booking a table and meeting up with friends 100%.

Have absolutely no problem driving to any county the length of Ireland at the moment though and see no issue with it. Same goes for once the flights re open. Let all the Cautious Carols sit peeking out through their window until 2021 if they wish. The rest of us will go back to normal. You’d have to be a real greenhorn if you’re still listening to anything leo, Tony or Simon says.

I know plenty of nurses who work in the mater that were at bbqs and friends parties over the weekend and they’ve never enjoyed their work as much as now. They aren’t busy like normal times and are taking their breaks regularly, which wouldn’t normally happen.

Time to wake up and smell the coffee

That’s terrible and I am truly sorry that’s your situation.

However I and many others who are not in that situation will not sit indoors and stay inside a certain distance anymore, if it does not affect us or our immediate family and friends we see regularly.

If you have to stay in then stay in obviously . Why do the rest of us have to still do it for you?
