You seem under some illusion that all 27 are united.

Divide and conquer having worked so well for May et al in the last 3 years....

Sammy Wilson didn't take part in hard talks in NI. He was outside the gate protesting against them.

And when Sammy goes for his cod and chips they'll pawn off shark on him instead of the cod.

So what does an honesty box mean exactly ?

BBC Newsnight's Nick Watt saying that the Spelman-Dromey amendment is back in play tomorrow which attempts to rule out no deal entirely as opposed to TM's version which still leaves it as an option at some stage.

    Nothing like this, for example
Which depends on infrastructure for spot checks and actually registering all those bar codes and stuff. Easy to do at a port with physical controls on how you cross the border. Like ships and trains. Which is why the original proposal for a border in the Irish sea made sense. Would not like to try and implement such a scheme on 200+ crossing points with actually more vehicles crossing than Dover.

Especially on the German's stemming from pressure from their car manufacturers. In fact it has worked so well that they're already hinting they'll veto any request for an extension.

Didnt TM say last year that she would not lead the Tories in the next general election campaign?
Next *scheduled* GE was the claim. Allows weaselling out of it for a snap one
Did she use "scheduled" as a backstop?

Oh at this stage, let them at it. They don't know what they want but continue to complain that they are not getting what they want.

    Honestly.

Too simplistic to say that NI would have ~44 seats therefore DUP would win 22. I doubt they'd get near that - PRSTV system encourages other parties to get involved and fight for 3rd and 4th seats in constituencies. So over a period of time you'd actually see non-sectarian parties like the Greens or Socialists getting seats. The big Southern parties would also get involved and are experienced at playing the transfers game.

The truth is that the like's of the DUP would end up being relegated to PBP tier groups in a UI with their current policy because the system down here encourages multple candidates for a constituency. They wouldn't be able to just rabble rabble rabble their way to victory they'd quickly find themselves outclassed by other groups who actually give a damn about their communities and offer CONSTRUCTIVE arguments. Also the like's of FF and FG would be looking to build support in the North as well A UI might be costly initially but it's an oppertunity and one of the first thing's would be investment and driving job growth. Ironically if anyone up in Belfast thought about it they could stand to gain significantly from a UI as they'd gain jobs from this not to mention the likes of Airbus would likely stay there if it happened since UI means being in the EU meaning single market access.

Pretty much like the water stands in Dublin Airport. Take a bottle and put the correct amount of money into the box, but on the scale of importing goods over the border, self declaration you're importing what you say you are when paying the appropriate taxes and duties afterwards.

You seem under some illusion that all 27 are united.

Well the EU is far more united than the Conservative Party and Labour never mind the rest of the UK. NI and Scotland oppose Brexit and England itself has strong divisions.

It's not hard to stay united when a lot of them won't be overly impacted by Brexit. And even countries like Ireland that will be know the UK has to do a deal with it's biggest trading partner which is the EU sooner or later.

Neither of them can stop a no deal happening by default. It's like voting to suspend gravity as you're falling to earth. You can vote for gravity and you'll get your gravity, but voting against it will just make you feel better until the ground hits you.

And how does it work for immigration? Taking back control etc.

Newsnight is good popcorn eating to be fair.

I would say its as foolhardy to assume the EU 27 are united as to assume they arent. It would not surprise me in the least if some of the chaos merchants that head various Governments in Rome, Budapest, Warsaw or Prague (some worse than others) would use their veto in this matter to inconvenience an extension and cause all sorts of political crises and drift.

Paisley getting rattled on Newsnight. Didn't like being told 67% are against the DUP position in the north.

Christ almighty. I'm giving up lads, who's with me. Leave them over there have their delusions and fantasy notions because the UK are taking the right royal piss art this stage.

That's how it's going to work so well! They still haven't solved the great gaping hole in their arguement that in the event of a no deal they claim they won't be implementing a border.

It was telling on many fronts that all he admitted to caring about was the vote on the matter in North Antrim. He is a disgrace of a politician (literally) and a slug of a man.

Ian Paisley Jnr on Newsnight just now basically said that the NI remain majority in the EU referendum basically didn't count because that majority was mostly Catholic votes. Unfortunately it was the parting comment of his interview so Emily Maitlis was straight into cueing up the next segment and didn't seem to cop it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 45,558 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

That Paisley interview was something else. He dismissed Emily Maitlis' point that most people in NI disagree with his party's stance on Brexit by saying he doesn't believe "silly polls", that most of his constituents were for leave, and that "you and I know both know in NI polls are sectarian headcounts". Wow.

Oh I think she did, the look of disgust on her face and the incredulity on the face of the Tory was a sight to behold.

An honesty box wouldn't work at the border.

There are too many good republicans that would have an interest in avoiding the honesty box.

So going by his logic there should then be a border poll as 67% of NI are nationalists

If the UK don’t have a reason for extending then any if not all Countries in the EU have a logical reason to Veto the extension

If he said that about any other religion or nationality he'd be pulled up on it.

    Irrelevant what face she pulled.

BBC are gross hypocrites. Essentially, enablers of British nationalism and ignorance.
