David Berkowitz - Son of Sam.

It can't all be blamed on the parents.

Ed Gein was, Nilson hadn't commited his crimes when Psycho was released.

Gein was also loosely the inspiration for Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silence Of The Lambs.

There was a thread on reddit the other day about the large amount of serial killers in the US in the 70s and 80s being a result of soldiers coming home from World War II with PTSD and that being reflected in the next generation.
Not buying it. If that was the case, Europe would have been a psycho serial killer blood bath after WWII. Andrei Chikatilo is the exception, not the norm.
It's nothing to do with veterans suffering PTSD in the 80's and passing this onto their children. Back then it was much easier to get away with crimes. No DNA. Little to no forensics. No computers so police departments couldn't communicate between each other, unlike today. I may be wrong, but I don't recall any serial killer from that era claiming PTSD or kids from veterans claiming that.

In modern America, it's not serial killers that are scary but school shooters. Scary world to live in when your children have to walk through a metal detector to feel safe.

Jack the Ripper was quite prolific and its an interesting thought that in today's age of technology would he and others from earlier years like the Yorkshire Ripper have been caught or caught sooner?

One common theme in the hunt for the perpetrators seems to be the incompetence or mistakes made by the police

Albert fish...definitely. From prison he wrote to his child victim's mother with explicit details of how he tortured and murdered her... sicko!

The Vienna woods killer although certainly not the most depraved always stood out in my mind. Murdering woman and then investigating and reporting on them.

Serial killer Ed Kemper during police interrogation commenting on how he felt if he saw a good looking girl -

"One side of me says, 'I'd like to talk to her and date her.' The other side says, 'I wonder what her head would look like on a stick?"

The Ripper - Charles Cross(Lechmere) - was found in the act of killing Polly Nichols but bluffed and lied his way passed police. Police incompetence in letting him through the net.

I thought Jack the Ripper's identity was still unknown? There are quite a lot of theories about but how certain are they that it was Cross.

The most tragic case of police incompetence regarding a serial killer has to be without a doubt officer John Balcerzak.

It's hard to fathom how he did what he did. Look it up, it's unbelievable.

Sounds like you've planned this out pretty much to perfection... apart from the whole advertising it on the internet part! ;)

That picture in your avatar... that's not Fr. Jack... that's actually a picture of you, isn't it!? :P
Fuck! I've been rumbled. :D *looks in TiR's window and thinks better of it. This time...* :D
A bite mark was crucial to Bundy being convicted too. He bit one of his victims on the bum quite deeply and a forensic dentist was able to prove that that bite pattern matched Bundy’s teeth.
Funny enough that evidence would be pretty much inadmissible today as it's been proven to be extremely bogus a diagnostic tool. Years back I read a book on him by a woman who is a writer of fiction(IIRC), but knew him quite well in college. At the time she thought he was a lovely guy and not dodgy at all. That's what freaked her out and fascinated her about him.

She noted some of his girlfriends, of which he had a lot, often at the same time, got weirded out, but most didn't. The last one, who he proposed marriage to in court(an oddball bylaw of the state made it legal) and who had known him for years and had gone out with him on and off was completely convinced of his innocence. In the last days before he was plugged into the national grid when he confessed looking to get a stay of execution, she seemed completely stunned by it. She cut all contact(which had been daily. She even worked a way to screw him in prison, on death row, and got up the duff and had his kid) and refused his last phonecall before he got fried*.

He must have been bloody charismatic, as he had a load of girlfriends and even the ones who didn't get the weird off of him, they all noticed he was permanently broke and except for his car, most of his high value items he had stolen.

She also noted that his defence team wanted to fight the bite mark evidence with expert witnesses who they were sure would blow it outa the water, but Bundy being a egotistical fantasist wanted his day in the spotlight as the lawyer his college reckoned he'd never be and represented himself and vetoed most of his defence's advice.

That's another reason why I'm against the death penalty as a general rule, Bundy could have gotten away with it, and more than once. The evidence against him was always slim and circumstantial and most was ruled inadmissible. He was scarily meticulous in his murder. He knew and had actually worked with and advised the police, even writing a police handout on how women should avoid rape("funny" it was apparently really good advice, well I suppose coming from an "expert" like him). So he knew how the police gathered evidence. He never left a fingerprint or hair sample or personal physical evidence in his crimes. Until his very last evil, when he murdered a 12 year old girl and left fibres in his truck.

But yeah he could have walked and a major help for him all the way through was he was a normal, average, young, college educated, charming and pleasant looking straight White bloke. Now I'm most certainly no "SJW" type, but if he had been a working class lad with a built in tan in America I'd bet the farm he'd not have gotten away with for so long. In the early days they pulled in loads of Black and Latino guys, even though the witnesses said he was a White lad.

The other reason I'm agin it is it's in cold blood. By the state. If tonight some skanger comes in my window intent on burglary and stabbing me with a screwdriver and I get Palaeolithic on his arse and beat him to death with a flint handaxe(don't ask, but yep they're among the few weapons I have....), chances are I'll walk free. Now if said skanger broke in and I ran away, but found out who he was and tracked him down and killed him a few months or years later, I'd go down for it. Premeditation is a big influence on the courts and rightly so. That a state reverses that and applies it to it's own citizens, often prejudicially, and has too many innocents being effectively murdered by the state(it's the very definition of unlawful killing), means though my blood says yes, the same blood that feeds my brain says no.

*Given the electric chair has regularly caused almost certainly intense pain and suffering and many of the condemned would burn, even start to smoke. He died too easy that prick. Only one jolt required(they often go for three to be sure) and he was out if it in seconds.

Yeah. Though against my last post I'd happily slide a noose over his neck and pull the lever and I'd make it a short drop too.

Hopefully the guards in his prison have alerted the nastiest bastards in his prison and turn a blind eye, so they can torture, but not kill him, every day of his miserable existence. Even "ordinary" rapists would look down on him and that's some trick.

William Calley ordered & helped kill over 500 old men, women & children in My Lai & My Khe hamlets, tortured & raped a number of young girls before they were killed, scalped their hair of & wore it in their head bands as they mowed down humans and the animals in the hamlet with their AR-15's & M60's.
Burned the villages to the ground & polluted the wells.
the same trooper pushed another villager into a well and threw a grenade in the well. Next, he saw fifteen or twenty people, mainly women and children, kneeling around a temple with burning incense. They were praying and crying. They were all killed by shots in the head.

"A lot of women had thrown themselves on top of the children to protect them, and the children were alive at first. Then, the children who were old enough to walk got up and Calley began to shoot the children".

There were some South Vietnamese people, maybe fifteen of them, women and children included, walking on a dirt road maybe 100 yards [90 m] away. All of a sudden the GIs just opened up with M16s. Beside the M16 fire, they were shooting at the people with M79 grenade launchers ... I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
old papa-sans, women and kids. As a matter of fact, I don't remember seeing one military-age male in the entire place, dead or alive.

Josef Mengele would easily be the most sadistic, twisted and prolific killer of all time. Easily the worst human being ever to set foot on the planet. The fact he got away with it all makes it so much worse

Ramadan Mansour, Egyptian serial killer who tortured and killed homeless children, all boys under 14, on the rooftops of trains traveling between Cairo and Alexandria. Their bodies were thrown from the trains meaning the discoveries were many hundreds of miles apart hampering investigations.

He was nicknamed 'al-Tourbini' meaning 'Express Train'

The details of his crimes are sickening. He was eventually caught and executed by hanging in 2010

War can never justify the complete and utter destruction aimed of the civilian population which is what happened here. In the history of conflict there has never been more deliberate massacre of civilians.

I know the sentiment of the thread is probably looking for the lone wolf type serial killer but for me that atomic bombings is absolutely depraved.

As regards Irish serial killers, Larry Murphy springs to mind although never actually arrested or proven to have killed. There is also certain cartel leaders in Dubai who have ordered the murder of a lot of people in the last couple of years

Reading these wiki links about these guys (and in fairness it's mostly guys), you think you've read the worst you could read until they outdo one another.

Humans are capable of unimaginable depravity.
Interesting but not at all surprising how these people flourish. Given that the likes of Bundy and Ramirez are irresistible to a cohort of mad dopes (and probably more than a small cohort tbh) it's not surprising this trait survives.

I think Kieran Kelly is the only confirmed Irish serial killer (who would fit the typical profile anyway). He was Irish born but carried out his crimes in London between the 50s and 80s.

He would push people onto the tracks just as trains in the tube stations were coming in. He was convicted of 2 murders but is suspected of up to 30. He died in prison in 2001

Just on bombings, the nukes dropped on Japan were necessary. Millions more would have died otherwise.

If you want deliberate mass murder then the bombing of Dresden is up there. Done in a way so as to kill as many as possible.

Killing enemy civilians on the basis that you protect your soldiers is clearly a war crime.

However mass killings are not serial killings so it’s off topic.

He escaped out of Germany and lived in Argentina for 40 years. That in my mind is getting away with it . Given the utter depravity of the useless experiments he was carrying out and the horrendous suffering he inflicted upon mainly children before he killed them he should have had some serious retribution inflicted upon him. Spending 40 years living in freedom along Argentinian beaches was a sickening end to his story
