Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone else back NESMaker ? Really looking forward to trying it out, although it targeted at artistically minded folks who don't want to code 6502 which is pretty much the opposite of me...

Funnily enough I'd enjoyed renting JP1 and 2 so much I bought 3 and I played it a ton as a result but never really grew to love it. I think it does enough to be distinct from SMW and Sonic 2 and be judged on its own merits it's sort of the ultimate 2d euro platformer in my eyes but collectathons and sprawling repetitious looking levels were never totally my bag.

Best in the series is the DS port. Zoomed out perspective, faster speed, map screen and redesigned levels make it like a whole new game. It's still hard but it's the right type of hardness.

With it outputting a 240p I doubt you'll see any difference in detail. Just turn off texture filtering. The game was made with art that is best without it as it ruins some sharp edged textures that are used for windows in the game.

Not quite following you, but I did notice some difference to textures if you turn smoothing on.

It's great going back to play the original after twin snakes.

The last time I played the ps1 version was a day before the launch of metal gear solid 2 on the PS2.
    The hype was unreal.

    My first mid night launch.
My mother dropped me into xtra-vision literally hours after completing the first one.
    Something I won't ever forget.

That looks pretty interesting. Be right up my ally, zero coding experience :o

But I've way too much on my plate to start making games! Love to see what people could come up though

I wonder would it be possible to combine that tool and existing sprite sheets to make ports?

Interested in having a look once it comes out.

Just browsing ebay there for mega drive games. I know I harp on about this but things have gotten mad.

Since when is Alsia Dragoon a £50+ game? I never actually picked it up because it was always on my back burner because it is usually always available

I think it's the Gainax connection. There's been a resurgence in their popularity later.

Also to continue on the latest discussion, the Japanese considered western games on consoles to be utter garbage (and were right for the most part) so they sold poorly. You will find lots of very common western games where the Japanese version goes for insane money. It's probably what happened with the James Pond games.

Yeah there's a small but odd collection of Western Megadrive Japanese released like Judge Dredd, Batman Forever, Foreman For Real etc that cost a small fortune.

One I'd actually quite like is The Ooze given the bizarre cover and even more bizarre 18+ (?!) age restriction.

The texture smoothing gets rid of the pixilation but I think it looks worse, like a crappy N64 game as you lose all the texture detail. Also there are sequences where characters reach through windows, which are just textures with empty space in them. With texture filtering those spaces have a fuzzy section around them and it looks ridiculous.

So you can't get a licence for a game of your movie tie in? Dump the game? Call it something else? Fupp that, do this:

    FB_IMG_1518126189675.jpg
A video-game interpretation of the film score. Perfect.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Just stuck that my ZX Spectrum there now. Not a bad little job on the music. Haven't a clue what's going on in the game though.

I’ve moved away from considering the Pi a capable emulation device, having seeing it struggle with later levels in Sonic 1 for some unknown reason. It also hasn’t got the juice to run filters and scan lines while emulating at the same time, I got some frameskipping while trying. It’s good for some stuff alright, but it doesn’t take much to take it beyond its capabilities. I’ve since moved to Windows based Retroarch with the Launchbox front end. I use dedicated emus for certain thinks like Cemu, and PPSSPP etc, and it never breaks a sweat.

These new rom hacks are really interesting. The one below removes the slowdown from super ghouls n ghosts which is pretty amazing... I always felt capcom really half arsed console titles back in the day, many of their snes games suffer from slowdown when there really shouldn't be any

That is a lot for a newly-made game on a console that is nearly 30 years old.

Are we talking Pi 3 here? Or the earlier models , never had an issue with the Pi 2 and 3 for emulation at all?
What with all the c64 mini stuff have the BreadBin64Pi resurrected and currently getting it working on a CRT TV
There's a Pi 3 in there so I'll try it out with Sonic and see..

Pi 3 yep, running the latest Retropie at the time. Very strange one! If I recall, it was the Labyrinth Zone (a minute into Act 2 I think), among others, caused me a lot of slowdown & frameskipping. Had to use Picodrive with no scanlines on to get it to run smoothly, and even at that, it looked horrible & wasn't as smooth as it should be.

I had a play of that mega drive game at the Blackpool Play Expo this weekend and it's super slick. He was telling me Another World is the primary influence and that definitely comes across, with the same level animation but with responsive controls not cinematic platformer ones.

Seems Mr Biffo is making a dedicated retro gaming Digitiser Show:

His Found Footage series was frequently delightful nonsense so hoping this’ll also capture that surreal, grotesque craziness that defined the greatest of teletext pages (not a crowded field, granted).

Thanks, I needed some good news today!
Digitiser, truly the most remarkable teletext pages to come out of the great publishing houses of Ursa Minor, more satisfying than "Typing Basic with Zaphod", more exciting than "Strip Poker with Eccentrica Gallumbits", more intensely depressing than "Marvin's least favourite standing positions".

Have you watched Found Footage? It struggles a bit with the overarching sci-fi stuff and very ho-hum finale, but for the most part it's some lovingly absurdist sketch humour. I think the pilot captures the essence best, with the full series for those who warm to Goujon John and his surreal colleagues.

$90 dollars for one? That doesn't seem too bad if the build quality is good. Which it looks it from the photos. The LCD screen would really turn me off though, not much of a way around it I guess.

I'd be more into that than the 40 Winks n64 release, its just a port of an already released PS1 game, so nothing too exciting!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

I remember seeing incomplete gameplay of the N64 version years back. I think it's an interesting title to get done because it has a bit of development history. The US PS1 version even has a review comment from Nintendo Official Magazine on it's cover, because Nintendo were already promoting it before it was canned, it even appeared on one of those VHS promo videos. The ROM of the complete N64 version was already floating around the internet as well.

I'm torn on the Tempest repro there.
I'm a big Tempest fan and would love that and Robotron as dedicated cabs but, I think the tiny screen and controls would be too frustrating to use.
It does make me wonder about the possibility of building a mount for a spinner for my own cab, or maybe create something bespoke with a spare RPi0 and a CRT.
    A vector table top perhaps?

You know I was waiting forever to play Tempest in the flesh, finally did this weekend and I wasn't quite as blown away as I thought I would be. Asteroids, and the Vectrex game whatever it was, looked amazing with that glowing clarity. The monitor on the Tempest looked quite pixely by comparison. Maybe it wasn't very well calibrated I don't know.

I used to play the excellent Spectrum port years ago, and little prepared me for Tempest 2000 via RGB on the Jag. But my eyes be blessed, Tempest 3000, via the Nuon :( , on a Plasma display is just jaw dropping

Would the arcade version even work on a non vector screen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭Shapey Fiend

I googled that earlier and no, you can't run the original hardware on a raster screen.

Battlezone, Asteroids and the Vectrex looked great.

But colour vector monitors are pretty thin on the ground so not beyond the possibility that they'd emulate and use a raster crt I guess.

    Retr0gamer wrote: »

Wouldn't the screen type determine the visual output though? If you were emulating ON a vector screen, the game would look as it should; if you were emulating a vector game on a crt screen, it's not going to look as it should.

No. Vector monitors work totally differently to a crt and with hardware at the time being so basic you really had to work to how the display device worked.

A crt draws line by line using a rastered electron beam. A vector monitor gives the beam a coordinate on the screen then an end point and a line is drawn between them. If you send that display information to a crt it just wouldn't work.

If it was an emulated version I'm sure you could be able to set it up to send vector information but I'm not sure how easy that would be.

That's what I'm saying, in that, any pixelation isn't being caused just because "it's emulation", it's being caused because the vector game isn't being played on a vector screen. It's being played on a crt screen, two completely different technologies.
If it was an emulated version I'm sure you could be able to set it up to send vector information but I'm not sure how easy that would be.

It can be done, there are patches for Mame to do it - https://trmm.net/Vector_games_32c3

No sure the going rate, but if you get one there's some nice hardware and hacks out for them these days if the Vectrex facebook group I'm in is anything to go by.

Good to know! The last time I had one there wasn't too much in that regard, just a few extra homebrew games like Protector and that was it.

Do many folks on here still have one? I remember there was a time when we could have rented a room somewhere and had a Vectrex convention :D
