I just love that new General Retro Chat thread smell.
And look at all the room in here!
I can't wait to see what you all do with the place!

Shouldnt <Insert Coin> be to the right of the thread title instead of the left? ;)

    Ahem!

What do the other peeps of the boards think?

I thought the original title was perfect:

Yeah the original reads better. Not worth stressing about though. :)

If needs to be moved or deleted just lemme know.

Have a look at that thread. Someone might be able to help you out. I saw a Villager and Wii Fit Trainer in Gamestop on Henry Street on Wednesday. Villager had a sticker on the plastic saying hold until New Year, but it was out on the rack. Might be gone by now, but it's worth a look if you're close and stuck.

Nah, this one is better. 'Insert Coin' is the title of the thread and 'general arcade and retro chat' describes what it's about.

The other way around just looks odd :p

I think the other way looks like a game screen, the coin part isn't ever on top is it? it's like

I tried to get into it for a good 4 hours I think but found the humour forced and didn't have the clever context that makes south park actually funny. It's more 'hur hur remember this episode'. Combat is a bit crappy. I might try and play a bit more but honestly don't see what people see in it.

The new update from the La Mulana development team is pretty encouraging about the indie scene in Japan. Culturally they saw stuff like kickstarter and the likes as begging so indie was really just the doujin scene. However they are saying that it's taking off massively finally in japan, although it's eating into development time since instead of begging to get into trade shows they are now being especially invited to each and every one of them.

Kind of hoping japanese indie games make it big. Now Western indie games are well and good but I'd love a few more games like La Mulana, Cave Story, Fortune Summoner or Gunhound EX that are very authentic to 16-bit gameplay of old and not the bad western indie games that that just can't get it right (Shovelknight being an exception that proves the rule). Maybe even a return of weird japanese b-tier games like Katamari?

From what I've seen, the combat system would be the turn off. I don't mind the RPG aspect, but I'd prefer a more involved combat system than the 'select attack, watch, now you block, rinse, repeat'

€20 in Smyths at the minute. Have quite the backlog though. Just getting into GTA V too. I've been having some trouble with the PS3. Tried the GTA install multiple times and it kept failing, freezing online in BF4 and once or twice in Uncharted 3. I deleted the Battlefield 4 game data and it installed fine. About 10% in after around 3-5 hours, so I've a while to go yet, ha.

Wow, it's been gaining a lot of great reviews.
Each to their own I suppose.
That said, I've been watching The Babadooks lead actress Essie Davis in Miss Fishers Murder Mysteries, she plays an investigator in 1920's Melbourne, very enjoyable but hard to find.

it was one of my most hyped movies but it was just so painfully stupid to watch and I knew what the movie was going for from the very start.

its so painfully cut , alot of the acting was dreadful to watch and in the end I went really ?? this is what horror movies have come to for the last 2 decades ?

I woke up still angry that I wasted 2 hrs of my life watching it.

I thought the acting was quite good to be honest, the lead actress was excellent. She played a mother tortured by regular, mundane life really well.

Thought the Babadook was a superb psychological horror, and a great portrait of tortured parenthood (like a less abstract Eraserhead).

If only there was a place where I had articulated my thoughts in more depth ;)http://touch.boards.ie/thread/2057313730/1/#post92739912

I thought it was very well made and definitely something different. And like films like Dark Water the real horror comes from how difficult it is as a single parent with no support mechanisms around you. Is definitely great to see stuff like Babadook and Under the Skin being made and finding an audience.

I think it does definitely pick up. Although the best jokes are the section where you control Randy as it pokes a lot of fun at video game tropes, the game should have been more like that. But yes, too many of the jokes are references to stuff that happened in the show and mostly stuff from the really early years of the show. It's only about 12 hours long so you'll plough through it pretty quickly. I found the combat to be very similar to the Mario & Luigi GBA games, and that's about as much depth as I'd be looking for in a game like this.

It's also worth watching the 3 episodes they made that were supposed to run into the story of game. It gives a lot of background to the fantasy world that the kids are playing in and it will make you love Princess Kenny.

It's a new anime from Japan with Sega Characters, series finished today I think so good time to watch it
The project focuses on various anthropomorphised Sega consoles, known as "Sega Hard Girls" or "SeHa Girls" for short, each with their own unique personalities. The anime series follows three such girls; Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, and Mega Drive, who must graduate from Sehagaga Academy, a special school located in Haneda, Tokyo, by venturing into the worlds of various Sega games and earning medals.

by all means people who found it to be great I am happy for them and you but to me it was so poor.

the editing cuts from scene to scene was annoying aswell as the abstract camera shots from free falling on the bed was very mtv-ish.
the scene were the dog died had no weight to it and the characters themselves had no emotion that the dog was killed was pretty much oh well
forceful in execution with loads of dickhead characters I did not care about. sister was a dick , mother a dick , the son pretty much the most obnoxious character since jar jar blinx.
real life situation the mother should not bare a child she resents

Loving Captain Toad myself, no homo
It's such a gorgeous title, and plays so well.
One little issue though, and I feel embarrassed to mention it.

Given that, despite the lovely HD visuals onscreen, I for one wound up looking at the Gamepad pretty much all the time, how come they didn't just release it for the 3DS?
I mean, there doesn't seem to be an awful lot going on there that the little handheld couldn't do.
And you'd have the added extra of the added extra dimension.

There is probably a marvellous reason why not, and I'm 100% happy with the game on the WiiU so don't get me wrong.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 30,020 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

Alien Isolation features the most effective portrayal of the Xenomorph since the original film (before Cameron went and made them cannon fodder ;))

Shame the game could have used a bit of editing and fewer murderous androids, but when it works it's genuinely terrific.

Got alien isolation today in smyths for 30 euros , last copy they had

Destroyed my finger breaking odd the seal , sharp plastic :(

Wont be playing it till i finish assassin creed unity and till the servers are alright on the ps4 for me to redeem the code for the dlc

I would have picked it up only there were no copies left on the shelves in Smyths in Swords.
Also, the queue of desperate parents and their mewling spawn would put one off trying to ask if there were any more copies behind the counter.
Nipped off to GS and got the two I did instead.
I figure I'll pick Alien Isolation up at some point, when it's more plentiful at the 29.99 price.

What's great is that it's a totally original and cool way to use the Sega heritage.
And compare it to the way Nintendo use their IP, Sega seem to far ahead.
And as for poor poor Sony and the tragic story of MS in Japan, just embarrassing.

Hideki Naganuma shared it on FB (add him), I saw it somewhere else but something happened like I couldn't find the name so delighted he shared it again and its on Crunchyroll afaik.

Folks, I need to upgrade my hdmi switcher. It's a cheap non-hdcp box that doesn't work with the PS3, PS4 or the One...so it needs to go. Any recomendations for a decent one that won't break the bank, preferably a passive, auto switcher one?

Yeah. The original is great. The amount of dread you feel when ever she finds the little yellow bag is brilliant. Babadook does a very similar thing with the book.

Watched a science fiction film called 'The Signal' over the xmas. It started out lovely as a slow burner but about half way through it takes a one way trip into stupid town.

I had such bad luck hooking up my Sky HD box, PS4 and WDTV Live box to various digital hdmi switchers, in the end I bought a mechanical one in Powercity and it works just fine.
The always on nature of the Sky box was playing havoc with earlier ones.
