I'm torn on the Tempest repro there.
I'm a big Tempest fan and would love that and Robotron as dedicated cabs but, I think the tiny screen and controls would be too frustrating to use.
It does make me wonder about the possibility of building a mount for a spinner for my own cab, or maybe create something bespoke with a spare RPi0 and a CRT.
A vector table top perhaps?

I remember seeing incomplete gameplay of the N64 version years back. I think it's an interesting title to get done because it has a bit of development history. The US PS1 version even has a review comment from Nintendo Official Magazine on it's cover, because Nintendo were already promoting it before it was canned, it even appeared on one of those VHS promo videos. The ROM of the complete N64 version was already floating around the internet as well.

$90 dollars for one? That doesn't seem too bad if the build quality is good. Which it looks it from the photos. The LCD screen would really turn me off though, not much of a way around it I guess.

I'd be more into that than the 40 Winks n64 release, its just a port of an already released PS1 game, so nothing too exciting!

Have you watched Found Footage? It struggles a bit with the overarching sci-fi stuff and very ho-hum finale, but for the most part it's some lovingly absurdist sketch humour. I think the pilot captures the essence best, with the full series for those who warm to Goujon John and his surreal colleagues.

I had a play of that mega drive game at the Blackpool Play Expo this weekend and it's super slick. He was telling me Another World is the primary influence and that definitely comes across, with the same level animation but with responsive controls not cinematic platformer ones.

Pi 3 yep, running the latest Retropie at the time. Very strange one! If I recall, it was the Labyrinth Zone (a minute into Act 2 I think), among others, caused me a lot of slowdown & frameskipping. Had to use Picodrive with no scanlines on to get it to run smoothly, and even at that, it looked horrible & wasn't as smooth as it should be.

These new rom hacks are really interesting. The one below removes the slowdown from super ghouls n ghosts which is pretty amazing... I always felt capcom really half arsed console titles back in the day, many of their snes games suffer from slowdown when there really shouldn't be any

The texture smoothing gets rid of the pixilation but I think it looks worse, like a crappy N64 game as you lose all the texture detail. Also there are sequences where characters reach through windows, which are just textures with empty space in them. Yeah there's a small but odd collection of Western Megadrive Japanese released like Judge Dredd, Batman Forever, Foreman For Real etc that cost a small fortune.

One I'd actually quite like is The Ooze given the bizarre cover and even more bizarre 18+ (?!) age restriction.

I think it's the Gainax connection. There's been a resurgence in their popularity later.

Also to continue on the latest discussion, the Japanese considered western games on consoles to be utter garbage (and were right for the most part) so they sold poorly. You will find lots of very common western games where the Japanese version goes for insane money. It's probably what happened with the James Pond games.

It's great going back to play the original after twin snakes.

The last time I played the ps1 version was a day before the launch of metal gear solid 2 on the PS2.
The hype was unreal.

My first mid night launch.
My mother dropped me into xtra-vision literally hours after completing the first one.

Funnily enough I'd enjoyed renting JP1 and 2 so much I bought 3 and I played it a ton as a result but never really grew to love it. I think it does enough to be distinct from SMW and Sonic 2 and be judged on its own merits it's sort of the ultimate 2d euro platformer in my eyes but collectathons and sprawling repetitious looking levels were never totally my bag.

Best in the series is the DS port. Zoomed out perspective, faster speed, map screen and redesigned levels make it like a whole new game. It's still hard but it's the right type of hardness.
