I think for VR, PC is the only way to go really. I'm incredibly interested in seeing what Sony add to the market, but the scope of VR is so huge that being able to mod things/try out interesting bits people put up online has so much more potential than console VR.

I'm just worried that €950 on a console & vr headset, will be a high price of entry for a very mediocre vr experience. I think the PS4K will be a nice little console, but I'll hold off getting one for a little bit. Plus, if the rumours are to be believed, the rift could likely be compatible with Scorpio, so going the rift route suggests the best value.
Saying that, I still don't have a ps4 and am waiting for the new version to come out before I get one - although that's mainly for The Last Guardian tbh! :D

I've waited this long for it, I don't mind waiting a little longer :D

Yeah, especially with all the new decent graphics cards popping up lately at close to budget prices from AMD and Nvidia that will run the Oculus pretty well.

I'm not a big ATI fan, so am eyeing up a GTX 1070... The 1080 would be nice, but this build is for playing games on ultra settings at 1080p, so the 1080 would be completely wasted (and would bankrupt me!)

Yeah, not a fan myself. I'm upgrading my main PC this summer, so am slowly getting the parts together and will more than likely go for a 1080 in some shape or form(probably ASUS as I've always had good results with them).

A 1070 would probably be overkill for 1080p also. You can get 970s now for great prices which will churn out 1080p60.

Hmm, I'm hard pressed to see an A&R use for VR
    Just kidding
I have a PS4 and might interest in the headset for the PS.
I'm not ever going to climb back on the PC Gaming horse, did my time back in the 90s!

A 970 will do 1080p in its sleep at 60Hz on most games. Also most VR games at the moment will target the 970.

However a 1070 is much better for future proofing.

Also I suggest not bothering with 1080p. Get yourself a 1440p monitor, it's a big step up from 1080p. I myself have a 3440x1440p monitor, Ultra wide screen. It's very hard to go back to standard wide screen and a lot more games are supporting it. A 1070 will power that no problem. I've seen my friends 1070 power it no problem, my 970 is struggling and it's screen tear city. Can't wait until my parts arrive so I can actually use my own 1070 which is mocking me.

Indeed, if I'm taking the plunge I'd rather go head first & built a system that'll last a bit longer.

Space is the big problem for me. This is for the games room so there's only space for the existing tv, and some shelf space. It's the reason I'm going the water cooled m-ITX route too. So while a nice desk & monitor would be ideal, I really don't have the room. This will be a small form factor pc, not much bigger than a console, that'll boot straight into Steam BPM...a consolised pc if you will :)

    Your very own VR arcade!

In that VR arcade you could have a Virtuality machine.

A VR arcade machine within VR. :pac:

A 970 would probably suffice, but a 1070 would be well future proofed, it's totally overkill at 1080p.

Also water cooling might be over the top for a Nvidia card. the crazy thing about them is they are based on mobile chips so draw surprisingly little power and run quite cool. 150 W powers a 1070, about 75 W for a 970.

One thing to watch is the size of the card. The 1070's at the moment are 30 cm long, they just fit in my mini ATX case. 970's are much smaller.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,912 ✭✭✭Steve X2

Also, remember that you're graphics card can be used for more than gaming these days. My current nvidia card really helps out with rendering 4k footage in Adobe After Effects.

Watercooled CPU, not GPU :) It'll likely be running an i5 6600k up nearer to 4Ghz. The mini-ITX case is built around an AIO cooler so I think it's the way to go. It'll be toasty in there, with no room for an active air cooler, so water seems the best option.

That'll be where things get real tight. The case can house a 10.5" card, the exact length of a 1070 reference...

I'm also building a 1070 system at the moment. Going with a i7-6700K too.

I'm waiting for the 1080 laptops to launch, so hopefully after August of September.

With how little CPU power has improved at all I'm quite happy with my i5. there's very few CPU heavy games and nothing really takes advantage of i7 hyperthreading. At the moment a i7 seems like a waste when you can spend less on a good i5. Still an i7 is more future proof but at the moment intel are just resting on their laurels due to the lack of competition from AMD and not bothering to advance their tech while GPU power is becoming more and more important. I mean there's still people happily using their i5 2500K 5-6 years on.

That's pretty much the same conclusion I came to, when researching for this build. The i7's seem well suited to certain tasks like video editing etc, but for mainstream gaming, a higher end i5 would seem the better choice (value versus performance wise)

For gaming you definitely don't need a newer i7. The older k versions can be had for small money these days or a newer i5 will do the job.

But I got a i7-6950X for a work test machine. It's a beast, but probably not worth the asking price for a home machine. So hopefully sanity will prevail when i go to buy the proc for my upgrade at home.

I've decided against buying a PS4K & PSVR...and am going to build an ITX gaming pc instead. Feck sake, what was I thinking!

What if the PSVR gets PC support? :D

They have said it may get official PC support but also said they're more focused on delivering games the PS4 platform.

Someone will probably hack the thing to run on PC eventually I'd say, if they release an SDK it would be sweet but can't count on it.

Either way my mannequin head came today so it's waiting patiently to hold whichever headset I go with! :P

Same here! Still runs Assetto Corsa and ETS2 reasonably well though.

I don't see PlayStation VR having much of a future. It's all set to be the this generation's Mega-CD. It will get about 18 months support from Sony and then be kept on life support by indies being ported from PC.

It's not exactly consumer level when it costs more than the base console and it's not enthusiast level since those people will be found on the PC side of things.

If it did get PC support though it would be the cheapest in its market and the most desireable for casuals users who want the pornhub VR experience! :P

For people with lower end PCs its ideal also because it would only require 60fps for stable performance.

This is what will finally lead to me putting a lock on my room door. Don't need someone walking in and for me to not even notice...

400 notes for a peripheral is not a casual user price point. Also if you want a stable 60 fps experience at 1080p a 970 gtx is the bare minimum for VR and that is an enthusiasts card. The Sony one does render a good deal lower than 1080p but even on the oculus 1080p is much too low, the PS VR is going to look like blocky aliased crap unfortunately.

As for PC support, not going to happen any time soon until it's well passed the point that it could have made a difference.

I'm counting myself out of the PC VR thing.
And I may or may not buy into whatever Sony are peddling, depending on the kind of support it has and the quality of the experience.
Their efforts in AR and motion control have been broadly pitiful despite investment.
    But we'll wait and see.

The MS Illumiroom looked more like my kind of thing, expanding the game world beyond the primary display, unfortunate then it has not moved to commercial use, remaining in their labs instead.

Illumiroom really vanished off the radar alright, I remember there was a time when they were really pushing it as one of the biggest next things. Seemed like an interesting concept.

The price of entry and the effort of the setup was always a bit too far beyond for regular Joe Consumer though. Who actually has a projector pointing at a TV in their living room?

Well, a subsidised projector and the included Kinect would have done the trick, probably for a lot less than the PSVR.
