I'm still 1080p on my 970, and pretty damn happy with it tbh. Saying that, I've had no 1440p exposure...

Yeah, but if you were buying a new screen for your PC you'd probably up the resolution, no? Not saying go 4K, but 1440p is more or less the same price as 1080 these days.

So, seeing as we have wholesale abandoned, albeit temporarily, the Arcade and Retro remit of this forum, what sort of money could I get away with spending if I wanted to get back in on PC gaming, stretching that spending dollar as far as it will go.
I have the case, PSU, hdd and monitor, so how much?

What resolution is the monitor? No point in going for a crazy graphics card if its 1080p.

1920x1080, a 24" Acer that's been performing good service for a number of years now.

A 970 is fine for 1080p but above that you'll be having trouble hitting 60fps with ultra settings. A 1070 is kind of overkill for 1080p. 1440p is a nice step up from 1080p, a 77 % pixel increase and it's very noticeable. Since I'm running mine in 21:9 I've to fill about 7 million pixels compared to the 2 million of 1080p so the extra grunt is very much needed!

Sigh. I'd give anything for them to go back to being Namco Bandai. The current way it's laid out rolls off the tongue terribly.

PS Vita hacked: full system access enabled for homebrew

    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-playstation-vita-hacked#244165
Dubbed HENkaku, the exploit is preposterously simple to install. Just ensure that you are running the latest firmware 3.60, then visit a specially prepared website to activate the exploit. The injected code removes the Vita's file system from its sandbox and allows users to access it via FTP. From there, homebrew packages can be transferred across and run on the unit.

The exploit also works on the PlayStation TV/Vita TV micro-console, and the open access to the file system means that the ability to whitelist all titles has now returned, meaning that games which were bizarrely locked out - including Sony's own, some of which worked great - can now once again run. Other applications include the ability for developers to create homebrew apps that overclock elements of the Vita at a level that's inaccessible to game developers.
Right now, there isn't much to play with homebrew-wise, aside from a Vita version of Doom and a smattering of emulators, but it's expected that the release of HENkaku will see this situation change rapidly. Any such exploit opens the door to piracy, and while there are no anti-DRM measures in the package, Team Molecule accepts the possibility that pirated commercial games may well happen.

"It does not let you install or run Vita 'backups', warez, or any pirated content," says developer Yifan Lu. "It does not disable any DRM features. It does not let you decrypt encrypted games. Here's my stance on this: I do not care one way or the other about piracy. I do not judge people who do pirate. I will not act as the police for pirates. However, I will personally not write any tools that aid in piracy. It is my choice just as it is the pirate's choice to steal content."

Finally stopped putting off setting up RetroPie and got an 8bitdo NES30 Pro for it. Well it looks like I'll have to get another one, because I made the mistake of trying it in the living room and I'm not getting it back from the mother...

Thanks! I nearly had a heart attack when the Umihara Kawase games got delisted before I bought them!

Just setup Recalbox, easiest config by a long shot.
    Just FTP your files over.
    Run the background scraper.

    Play.

Been messing around with the SD2SNES today. It's a very decent cart and the MSU1 hacked games are impressive. Although to be honest I don't really care for all the FMV in the games, it's more the enhanced audio that I like the most.

Is the cart work the money over the Super Everdrive(more than twice the price)? For most people, I'd say no.

My SD2SNES works with absolutely everything I throw at it other than some fan translations but those were ones designed for emulators and not real hardware. Is there stuff it does better than a super everdrive?

    Edit:
And I assume you've seen all those MSU1 hacked games?

Hmm, it's nice to have those supported ships though. BSX-1 especially. It's probably why I went for a SD2SNES instead of an everdrive.

I was thinking of getting this as opposed to everdrive. Has a firmware update been released for super-fx chip?

I'm guessing it will take more than a firmware update to add super fx support. I do remember one of the flash carts can support super fx if you add one yourself to it but can't be too sure. The good thing though is all super fx games seem to be really cheap to get, even Yoshi's Island can be the very cheap if you go for a Japanese version. The exception to that is Starfox 2, it's one of the few cases where you'll have to pony up for a repro to play it on original hardware.

Order a nice Bang and Olufsen VHS player. Receive a Bang and Olufsen DVD player!?

    Facepalm_Render_large.jpg

I'm pretty sure I could throw a ball in my house and hit at least 2 devices capable of playing DVD's! :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,912 ✭✭✭Steve X2

All sorted, VHS on the way and the DVD player is mine to keep :)

That CD-i player I got last week worked out to be free as well(along with the load of movies that came with it). But that's another story :)

Trust you to get two things free. I suppose you have to keep up the reputation.

Between Steve getting sh1t for free and Ollie getting sh1t for practically free, there's certainly a business opportunity if they joined forces! ;)

If you only knew some of the stuff I get for free just by giving out about service and/or products :)

I rarely get bargains. My tastes usually trend towards the obscure, rare and therefore expensive end of the market and when I decided I want something I usually end up buying it when I see it for a reasonable price for the first time.

I wish it was like that.

It's more sitting in my room with the heating off and a blanket around me eating beans on toast until the next pay cheque arrives while playing Hyperduel on the Saturn and loving it but not 400 euros loving it.
