Hope you don't mind me posting here! I've been following/reading the thread for a while now and finally have something to contribute! I've worked out with a trainer in his own gym before but recently had to move to a full gym. A few annoying things for me:

People on phones. I'm always a little worried they are taking sneaky photos of me and sending them to their friends to mock me. I know some people in the gym hate me for being there simply because I'm fat. Knowing that is kinda annoying too actually.

Mirrors. Trust me, any hatred people have for me is nothing compared to how I hate my own body. I can't stand the sight of myself so the wall to wall mirrors are highly annoying. I feel sick and disgusted whenever I see my own reflection so you can imagine how uncomfortable it is in the gym! Doesn't stop me from going but sure is annoying!

Weights in the wrong order on the rack. Is it that hard to put them back with the right sizes?

Guys coming into the ladies only area to show ladies what to do. Even if the lady asks them to it's just not on!

Oh yeah a word of explanation. There is one treadmill in my gym that doesn't have a mirror in front of it. When I do use them I'll always use that one regardless of how many are free and who is beside me. :P

Sounds like you have psychological issues rather than there being any issues with the gym

    jesus youre super helpful.
most people have psychological issues around their body, particularity if they dont fit the 'norm', mainly because alot of people *cough cough* are fundamentally assholes.. people who take photos of people working out only to mock and deem them are scum, we live in a society where being fat is worse than being selfish, racist, stupid.
you think the OP above has psychological issues because they are overweight and think people will mock them for it? because they dont like looking in the mirror?  welcome to the real world mate, most people dont love staring at themselves sweaty and red faced in a full length mirror...

    Who wouldn't?

But then there's this post I made in response, which I've actually forgotten so this is quite a timely reminder for myself.

Now to keep the thread on track another annoying thing in the gym is having a question about a move but not being able to find staff to ask!

Flyefit in Swords. I hate that place. Well the clientele mostly.
The swipes on the entrance turnstiles can be a bit flaky. So I was scanning one night trying to get in. A guy walks up from inside the gym and scans his card to exit. Literally as Im standing there with my card in the scanner. Of course it beeps straight away for him and he barges out. Like I wasn't even there.
For those that don't know the gym there is a second turnstile maybe 5 feet away.
Thats normal for the guys in there though, constantly posing, throwing weights, slamming doors etc.
The Coolock Flyefit(RIP) while it was open was much nicer.

you dont have psychological issues, you have a weight issue, you are working to get healthier. ignore the rest of the nonsense.
as for staff not being around its the same for me, there doesnt seem to be anyone over the age of 30 in any of the gyms i go too!
there are a few good apps that you can use though...

One of the idiots who works in BD's Northwood (they have to be the worse gym staff in the entire world) pulled me up for wearing flip flops in the weights area. He actually told me to stop training and leave the area.

I asked what was the problem.. Well I get this, if a weight falls on my foot it'll injure me ~ see, I'm an adult and I get this!.. So I pointed out the people training in socks and trainers and asked him would he be asking those people in the interest of health and safety if they'd mind wearing steel toe safety boots, only to be told no 'socks and trainers are fine'

Yup, sometimes even the staff are a special kind stupid.

Guess the steel toecaps are going to be a requirement for the gym soon, I have to wear them to most customer sites (factories) with work, probably just leave them on for the workout.

people walking around/working out in their ****ing socks, have a bit of respect for other people, they already have some notices for people to wear deodorant, I don't need to be smelling some ignoramus's stinking feet aswell

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

    you dont have psychological issues

I think it's pretty clear there is quite a bit of anxiety there. Horrified of mirrors, paranoia over innocent phones, resenting the brief presence of a man; that's psychological.

id say it depends on the type of gym tbf. deadlifting in your socks/barefoot is pretty common from what ive gathered

Nothing wrong with deadlifting in socks.

Or squatting if the runners you're wearing have big ol' spongy soles.

The problem there is stinky feet, nothing wrong with working out in socks if you're feet are decent.

different strokes i guess, lads being around dont bother me, but a lad walking into a womens only section to give unwarranted advise would, thats not a psychological issue for the OP, thats a lad not understanding basic instruction.
when i was 20 stone i would actively avoid mirrors- it wasnt psychological i just didnt like how i looked so would avoid it...

and the phones thing, its a bit much to think everyone is out to get you but there have been times where ive wondered if someone is snapping an unflattering gym photo of me, it gives me the heebeejeebees especially when you see the stories about assholes taking them and mocking them...
i dont think theyre psychological issues in so much as their common issues people- especially women experience in gyms, its why theres a massive chain of womens only gyms around the place, all those women cant have psychological issues now can they?

You train in a gym which has notices up requiring people to use deodorant?.

Seriously now that's a first for me!.

It must be a sweetest smelling gym ever.

It's not that I believe EVERYONE on their phones is snapping photos of me. Just that it COULD happen and it's annoying because there's no way of knowing or stopping it. I have hangups and insecurities. Doesn't everyone? Like I said, doesn't stop me. If I stayed at home and refused to come out of my house, well then I'd say I have psychological issues.

It's a matter of degrees. Being unhappy with your appearance is different to "I feel sick and disgusted whenever I see my own reflection". Also the example given was when the girl asks the guy to show her something. I think he should stay out anyway if it's a women's only section but it's hardly a big deal. If people are suspiciously pointing their phones at you that's one thing, but that wasn't mentioned - it was just the fact that people were using their phones at all.

Anyway, I'm not sure we should spend any more time discussing someone else's psychology!

Water bottles on benches - this is my bench and i shall make it as taken with thee water bottle!
Selfies, there are an awful lot of people doing this now and also fitness "bloggers" taking selfies and posting on instagram - very normal, not!
People doing circuits during peak hours, sure you can train in with them but some think you best be finished before they get back to this particular apparatus!
I actually left my last gym over this kind of stuff, i am an old school though, perhaps it was time to hang up the belt!

Jesus! I quit going to gyms a few years ago because of the kind of pretentious arseholes commenting on here. Recently moved and there's a gym beside my new work place. Was thinking of joining it but this thread has reminded me why those w@nker palaces arent worth the hassle.

Uhm, if I need to go swap dumbells or find a piece of equipment is this not the best way to show that the bench is being used?

I'll probably sign up for a boot camp or crossfit or something. More expensive but they seem to be a bit more accepting of all abilities, better staff and people more keen to explain things than just sit there silently judging the colour of your socks
