If all the treadmills are free, now I mean they are ALL free, then a person gets on a treadmill right beside u ?! Am I the only weirdo who hates this lol ;) doesn't help that the treadmills are nearly welded together

As I mentioned before new to all this lark ...my new moan is both girls and lads taking selfies like posing mid reps..I have noticed nearly every person under 30 stops a number of times to pose for selfies or for photos taken by others..
Another thing I have noticed is in the class studio (lots of mirrors) people have started to pose...like both men and women stripping down to underwear and throwing all sorts of shapes..now I know some guys are doing shows and might need to practice posing...but it's very off putting when some lads and girls are bouncing around nearly in the nip... am I just showing my age or is normal gym behaviour 😮😬

Ah you see maybe the person has a reason why they are doing this. Some might say ' love themselves' ;) For me I hardly move on the scales but pictures and clothes always show me my progress. I don't do it in the gym yet lol but if I was down to the weight I wanted I would be taking pics to watch it maybe ;)

Or it means that that's their favourite or regular threadmil?
I try to use the same one all the time coz it's just under the air conditioner vent and you get a good view of the desk and front door to distract me. If there's someone on the one next to it I'll still hop on it

Ah ok fair enough, that's a good reason. ;) I suppose I'd be the same with certain machines and I thought that was just me with my fav machines lol but I still won't go beside anyone if a load are free lol even if they are beside mine lol but that's just me.

I rarely use a treadmill but the one time I do use it will be if I'm a bit early for a spin class. I'll have a few mins walk to get the legs moving - thing is, I have to get a treadmill near the Spin Studio so I can see the instructor walking in and know it's time to head in for the class... usually there's several other people going to the class with the same idea and we'll all congregate on the five or six machines nearest the studio... thing is, there'll always be at least one poor soul who is just doing some treadmill work and couldn't give a fiddlers about Spinning and I guess they must be wondering why everybody is surrounding them when there's about 12 other treadmills free - those ones just haven't got as good a view to the Spin Studio! :)

I dunno OP, maybe it's something like that... or maybe you're a bleedin' roide! :pac:

More of a little venting than actually pointing out an individuals actions.

Ben Dunnes in Northwood.. Now I've been in all manner of gym's over the last thirty years I'm training, but although the staff do a stirling job at keeping the place clean ~ esp the changing and wet area's its some of its members let down an otherwise fine gym.

The weights area is be far, by a country mile THE most untidiest gym I've used anywhere. Without exception, its the worse.

I can understand some plates left on the barbell, however I do understand some people's annoyance as its difficult for some to shift a lot of plates about before they start a warm up.

But the sheer amount of DB's, BB's & plates left strewn about the gym floor is sheer and utter laziness, inconsiderate assholes. Never seen a gym like it, and it reflects only on the people using it as (I said it earlier) the staff do a sterling job and keeping the place tidy.

    Phew, finished :)

I don't have even a fraction of the time spent in gyms as you but it really stands out to me that the staff set the attitude and the members keep it. A proper loud bollocking does wonders.

  • ahhh northwood!! the do as I say not as a do gym!!

rules on all the walls, staff terrified to enforce them. the things you see people doing in there make me cringe. lads throwing reverse hook kicks millimetres from girls trying to do arm curls!!! Lads in barefeet kicking a punch bag whilst standing under two signs, "no kicking the bag" & appropriate footwear must be worn"!!

how do Northwood enforce it??? they take the bag out!! and party's over, dunces spoiled it for everyone!

Same with the weights etc in Westpoint, ridiculous selection of dumbells that got smaller during the "if you don't put it back, we'll take it away" phase they went through.

Staff and trainers leave their **** lying round, so why would anyone be concerned they'd enforce then clean up after yourself rule

  • that is it, punish the many for the actions of the few..primary school type stuff.

The staff are little more than kids tbh, ok I might be showing my age there but they're barely out of their teens and wouldn't be up to giving anyone a bollocking.

And I'm not being hard on the staff, as I said earlier they do a sterling job keeping the changing rooms, wet areas and in fairness most of the rest of the gym very clean and tidy.

But the state of the free weights area is a reflection on the inconsiderate assholes who'd rather leave weights strewn about the place and not the staff, its very bad. (I'm not a member of staff!!)

Hahaha, amazing. Ben Dunne had a sign up claiming that would happen before but of course it didn't. Always assumed it was a bluff. Can't believe any gym actually tried.

    1. He sounds like a complete twat and it's totally unacceptable. Should've let you work in at least.

    2. Be nice and say what you said here: that he's not using the smith machine for the full half hour.

    3. Failing the above, mention it to a staff member.

    4. He doesn't seem to know what's he's doing.

    5. Did I mention he sounds like a twat...

This has been annoying me for the last few days so thought I'd post it here.

I was in the Gym last Saturday around lunchtime and it was very busy. I was hoping to use the smith machine for part of my chest routine but there was someone using the machine so I put my towel down and took a drink. The guy then finished using the machine and stood directly in front of it and started doing lunges. I asked him was he finished using the machine and he stared me down and said no that he was "doing legs today" and that he'd be another half an hour at least. I was a bit stunned to be honest ... he was looking at me like I was an idiot who didn't understand what he just said ... so I walked away. I glanced at him a few times over the next 30 mins and he was rotating between 3 different leg exercises (only 1 using the smith machine) but also standing directly in front of the machine to make sure no one else could use it.

    Is this behavior acceptable?

Any advice on how I should react if something similar happens?

He's quite possibly a d*ckhead but you should ask to work in when he's doing the other exercises.

If he says "no", that's full blown dickheaditis.

It was pretty clear that he had no interest in letting me work in.

He effectively booked a machine for half an hour where no one else could use it.

Ask and it forces him to either grudgingly let you work in or be an utter c**t and say no.

He might not want to and I've met those people but they often sigh and tut but concede.

There are just some people like that, with no consideration, and who think it's perfectly acceptable to take over a machine, or even several machines and not share it, for anything up to an hour. I was waiting on the leg press and using the machine beside it for 5 sets worth. All the while the same person was using the Leg Press so when I was finished I asked how many sets they had left. They said 2, so I though, fine I'll wait here till they are finished.

I did not realise 2 sets meant:
50 reps normal leg press, straight into kneeling sideways on the machine and pressing with left leg x 50 reps, kneeling sideways on the machine and pressing with right leg x 50 reps (she had the machine set at 5kg). Then straight into the second round without a break  (I was going to ask if I could hop in, as I hadn't realised the sets were so long).

When she said "2 sets" she could have also mentioned but I'm doing 150 reps per set as an indication not to bother standing there for approx of 10 minutes. She really thought nothing of it either, as if it was perfectly acceptable.

He was being a prick. He should have let you work in between his sets.

Having said that, he did you a favour. Smit machines cause cancer.

Admittedly it's more of a spiritual or conceptual cancer than the actual disease. But they eat away at you nonetheless.

Theres a couple in my gym who pretty much just sit around hogging machines while chatting away and gazing into eachothers eyes , it is so annoying.

Some people are just ****. You'll get it every now and again. Was doing dips in the in the leg raise / dip station, got a drink and a lad jumped in to do leg raises.

No bother says I, waited til he finished his set and moved to jump in, when he just says '2 more, won't be long', and just stood there, resting, staring away from me. It was more than slightly annoying.
