Do Kuwait change crews at SNN?. If so how long of a layover would they get? Extra income for the region if they do.

If they do change crews, does this mean that the crew have to get a visa every time they land in Ireland? I notice Ethiopian Airlines change crew in Dublin, with alot/all crew staying in the Clayton.

Yes there is a crew change in SNN. Flights are working very well through SNN at the moment.

A BA 747 on the ground at the moment after diverting was enroute ORD-LHR.
A BA 777-300 is due in around 1300 to collect the passengers.
A la Compagnie 757 is due in around 1145 for a fuel stop.

    A good days spotting.

If you are referring to the one that was filed in from KBOS last night on flightaware N007JB it was only a test flight plan. Not actually a real aircraft just made up reg entered for the testing of a flight route.

Any idea who would be behind that?Must be someone who likes to wind up spotters!

Ops departments or trip planners. Usually use a common aircraft but whoever was filing this test plan was obviously a big fan of the SP.

Shannon Airports Pax number have rising to 1.77 million up to July 2016 thats in 12 month figures.

Could we see stagnation soon? With MAN cut down even more this winter and BVA gone, there's not much going for the airport.

Not a good sign for Shannon after the fairly positive pax rises in recent years.

I just hope the Shannon - Berlin route isn't in danger of being cut back or being rid of completely.

Been moved to a ridiculous Tuesday/Saturday schedule for the summer (Which will probably mean the death of the route). Pity.

    Oh no that's awful:(
At least they won't come into effect until next summer I guess.

Wasn't there something like this in Knock last year. Lufthansa having a slack Saturday and gave Knock a Dusseldorf on a Sat only.

Was with Germanwings and 2 years ago IIRC.
Will be interesting to see if any valuable connections are available.

Germanwings were the ticket sellers as well IIRC, every PR release mentioned Lufthansa group though, probably for effect.

Great to see two established airlines (SAS & Lufthansa) opening up new routes in and out of Shannon.

It's pretty rare to see new services to Continental Europe offered to major centres. I really hope both services are successful.

Apologies on digging up an old thread, but I don't see a value in creating a new one for this.

I know its an election year. But, even with that, is there any excuse for this kind of nonsense?
    https://www.clareecho.ie/shannon-airport-not-getting-a-fair-crack-of-the-whip-pj-ryan/

... I have a suspicion that it’s a problem created in Dublin because aviation policy dictates through Dublin Airport, Cork Airport and also Shannon Airport even though it’s independent the Minister still dictates what happens there and I’ve a feeling that Shannon is not getting a fair crack of the whip”.

With a permanent successor to Matthew Thomas yet to be appointed as CEO of Shannon Group plc, Ryan stated what the goal should be for his replacement. “Their main thing needs to be to attract business to Shannon Airport, I fear they can’t do that with one arm tied behind their back and that’s what is happening. I’ve had discussions both with Neil Pakey and with Matthew Thomas, both of them will tell you they are operating in a restricted area, they are controlled through the Irish Aviation Policy from Dublin which is a major problem”. ...
In fairness, this is just echoing nonsense spoken by others who should know better

Not good for anyone to have this mindset. Not good for Shannon, or anyone else.

Whats the capacity at Shannon in terms of pax numbers (assume movements wouldn't be an issue given the small number of departures commercially daily)? I see 1.7m transited in 2018, I wonder if EI could move transatlantic capacity to SNN given the state of DUB right now? By that I mean the connections ex UK primarily (Birmingham/Edinburgh/Heathrow presently, surely a MAN would be viable too?). Obviously would have to get timings right but definitely potential there I feel once the A321LRs come online.

SNN needs the M20 completed too. That'd offer regional O&D and another gateway to the South/West of the country for US tourists.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,263 ✭✭✭kevinandrew

    Split hubs don’t work.

Aer Lingus would never willingly move transatlantic capacity from Dublin to Shannon. Aer Lingus’ transatlantic operation from Shannon is primarily a point to point based business with a few connections from the regional UK destinations. Dublin is the hub, as the hub grows so does the efficiencies that comes with it. If Dublin gets to a point where it is too crowded, Aer Lingus will do what it takes as a business to ensure it gets the lion’s share.

Shannon needs to stop blaming Dublin and come to terms with the fact that it’s a small regional airport that does very well for its size.

Indeed. For an airport of Shannon's size, having 8 transatlantic routes at peak times is very impressive.

I can't think of any routes out of Shannon where there is reasonable demand that's not being served. Clearly the airlines are of the same opinion.

There is room for expansion from Shannon into Europe it just requires the right airline with a suitable schedule. Ryanair announcing routes then put a ridiculous schedule on it and its cancelled after 6 months. Look at Frankfurt gone twice weekly this year with Lufthansa they are appealing to inbound German tourist traffic as well as outbound connecting Traffic. This is the sort of business the airport needs to attract going forward.
Shannon is an international airport not a regional airport.
Any sane person does not listen to the raw maish that these local politicians spout out every couple of weeks. They haven't a clue and try to pin the blame elsewhere. SNN is facing a fight like other airports on the island to capture traffic and they will have to look at diversifying their business interests which is already in the works.

The chief executive of the Shannon Group has said that policy in Ireland is leading towards the country having only a single airport, in Dublin.

Matthew Thomas came with lots of promise but failed to deliver hence why he has jumped ship. I think this statement was a sign of desperatiom on his behalf.

Hubs generally only work when they are also primary origins or destinations. There are a few exceptions to this but I don’t think Dublin is or that Shannon could be.

I agree with much of the recent discussion above. Whilst Shannon does need to be independently viable and absolutely has to be managed with that mind-set, the airport is, however, an important national asset, at least in my view. Its runway length, diversion capability (pretty frequently used by weather diversions from Dublin and Cork as well as the transatlantic emergencies) and USPC abilities are significant attributes that make it important to keep Shannon active and thriving. It also has a reasonably significant proportion of the country connected to it by motorway these days – lack of an M20 notwithstanding; and parking that is extensive and affordable compared to Dublin.

The airport’s success with transatlantic flights in the summer season is commendable, no doubt building on the impressive Wild Atlantic Way marketing for O&D’s. I have noticed quite a lot of transfer traffic from these flights to the London EI flights though, so there must be some transfer demand there. I hope that both of the EI routes to the USA are given a fair chance to succeed in this market and don’t continue to be somewhat sacrificial when there are airframe shortages elsewhere as they seem to have been in the recent past.

Accepting that EI will want to focus on building Dublin as their hub for efficiency reasons, its current capacity constraints do make me wonder whether some of EI’s O&D holiday traffic - bucket & spade routes and maybe Orlando could make a little more of SNN and take some pressure off DUB to allow them to focus more on transatlantic business and transfer traffic. A bit like BA and VS do by using LGW for a fairly high proportion of their sunshine routes, many of which attract passengers from across the UK rather than just from London and the South-East. Just a thought…

Starts the 01st of June. Will be a big benefit to the large number of corporate jets transitting the airport.

I am not sure if this is the right place to post but since the US transport aircraft are landing in Shannon will we see the fighter jets that escort Air Force 1 in Shannon? Or would they be kept out of sight and refueled by an aerial tanker rather than landing .

Actually just read that was only escorted during 9/11 but some websites say it is escorted outside the USA

The "fighter escort" idea is strictly a Hollywood one.

The likes of bombers such as the B2 & B52 are often escorted but AF1 is not AFAIK, looking forward to seeing the E4-B if it goes to Shannon, if it doesnt it will most likely reposition to RAF Mildenhall.

Not great news for Shannon considering every other Irish airport showed passenger number increases in Quarter 1 of this year.

That airport's a lot more than its Self Loading Freight.

Between maintenance, cargo & charters, it's got more to it than just the passenger numbers.

Not really. MAX was only grounded on March 11/12th with only two weeks left of the first quarter.

Norwegian stopped flying to Shannon on the 12th of January, I never made reference to the MAX grounding.

The absence of Kuwait also made a big difference.

Up to a point, in the sense that Shannon handles about 5% of national passenger traffic and 10% of national air cargo.

But it has failed to meet the passenger traffic targets that were meant to be essential for its own commercial success, and to support regional growth.

And, according to the Irish Times, management are unavailable for comment.

I noticed on page 45 on the Lufthansa timetables up to march 2020 that they have listed Shannon as a destination from Frankfurt on Saturdays but its not bookable as yet. Would this be a true reflection or could they change their mind after the timetable was typed up and cancel the route

It’s probably only summer seasonal but I couldn’t be too sure. Probably isn’t viable in winter with very little inbound demand then. I would never take too much notice of those timetables especially many months away from the winter schedule.
