Tomorrow morning, rain, sleet and snow will spread northeastwards to all areas, with some small accumulations possible in parts of Connacht, Ulster and Leinster. Rain will clear to scattered showers in the west and southwest through the afternoon and evening. Cold in Ulster, Connacht and Leinster with afternoon highs of 1 to 5 degrees.

A few cms here in Ashbourne. Beautiful morning. The March sun will make short work of the snow but lovely morning.

Beautiful morning here in south Kilkenny. No snow, no ice, just sunshine ☀️

Much of the country avoided a severe frost in the lead up to this winter storm which didn't bring soil temperatures down enough. The current soil temperatures are mid enough (around 5c to 7c) and these are running around 0c to 2c above average.

The reports of quickly melting snow are being caused by these mild soil temperatures as heat has to rise out of the ground somehow. If this storm had to arrive after the last cold blast in December then we'd all have had a fairly memorable and deep snow cover.

Also, we've a much higher sun angle now and this will melt snow even through shallow cloud cover.

    Last image: Anomaly from normal

The usual scaremongering from RTE and the weather team drove to Cork this am roads were fine from Just outside Dublin .These colour warnings need to be a lot more specific instead painting everywhere as being hazardous and only go out if you have to .Of course hilly areas and back roads will be tricky but no need for the dire warnings .

Main news bulletins are a joke. How did we ever survive years ago walking to school in half an inch of snow with no orange weather alert

The gritters are on strike up here this week! Main roads are well covered with snow

Louth- About half inch of snow, got down our lane fine...main roads are just wet but imagine some areas have black ice.

Absolutely delighted we didn't get the amount of snow everyone was predicting,no disruption, can get about just fine. RESULT!!

The Connemara mountains look absolutely fabulous this morning. White from top to bottom.

Still snow on the grass here. Roads are tricky. Yesterday was fun. Galway West

That was some snowfall we got in D15,I would have loved to have seen the snow depth IF it hadn't been pissing ice rain all day

Spot the change from rain to snow, and then the melt! Wish I was awake to see it at its finest around 5AM

Went to bed at 2am because it really didn’t look like anything meaningful was happening and was woken by kids (adults) to see this. So beautiful. Melting fast but still nice to see. That’s 2 sessions this winter - yay!!

Maybe 15cm, but thaw on near Roundwood

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,880 ✭✭✭✭Rock Lesnar

Ah yeah, it was really heavy stuff for a few hours and its grand to see it at the time, but then ya remember its march, and the thaw has set in just as quick

Well at least we have a better guide on how to interpret Orange warnings from RTE.

Yer man in Carlow Weather had it more accurately - he pinpointed Thursday as the main likelihood for snowfall.

Nice to see all yer snow.

    Rebelbrowser is the new Kermit.

Just snow on mountains here. Spring greens everywhere else and dazzling light.

Another chance of snow tonight for us here but could be ugly sort snow sleet slush and rain!

Firstly maybe you want to go back and read the weather warning. It was for the period when it was snowing.

secondly you drove down a motorway. Of course the roads were fine, they should have been. You didn’t happen to go off on any side roads for example did you? Suppose you want Met to plot your route exactly do you?

they had their forecast spot on for Dublin anyway.

Managed to get about 1 to 1.5cm of snow from this which is melting fairly rapidly now in the strong March sunshine. I basically gave up last night around midnight when it was still a mixture of rain and sleet. This is the most amount of snow I've seen since March 2018.

If this had happened a month earlier with possibly colder uppers and lower daytime temperatures we could all triple the snow depths, some places more than 4x. This probably would have been close to Storm Emma for snow depths if it was earlier and we didn't have as much mild influence from the Atlantic with all the rain instead.

Nothing like as hazardous as being painted on the news headline news item way overboard.Of course back roads hilly areas etc can be dangerous that is nothing new .

I am glad you got snow Gonzo. And I think we all know at this stage that you would have preferred this event to be earlier in the year. Beggars can't be choosers.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?
