Agree. People getting OTT about them. Bar you line the whole nation up to be ready to get them on Day X at Y time, it'll never be perfect.

Once none is being wasted, and they are getting through the supply we have, and frontline staff in hospitals in the main are getting them, who cares if there is a bit left over and its given to an admin person?

Wasn't there a big outbreak in CUH anyway? I'm not sure we should be too trusting of claims by HCWs of how it's being done. People seem overly antsy about who's getting or not getting vaccinations. While it'll be great to have them they won't affect how we are living for a fairly good while.

In general, yes, but not with regard to HCWs. Anyway, my wife's hospital seems to have caught up and she got hers this morning.

Watched a documentary which I'd recorded on the Virgin box which stated how men are 40% more likely to die if they get Covid, which is statistically very significant. Presenter Dr Ronx (a female doctor) suggested that perhaps men should be prioritised for vaccine. Could you imagine the political fallout if this statistic were to be applied in the rollout!

But as women live longer on average, they potentially lose more time.....

I'm not sure if this is the correct vaccine thread to post in so please move it if it's not

A former CEO of Denis O Briens Digicell is now the Spx for the Vaccine rollout.

This is surely a conflict of interest given the current controversy over staff at private hospitals getting vaccinated before frontline workers.

It also has emerged that Admin staff at Drogheda Hospital have received vaccination ahead if frontline workers.

What exactly is the conflict of interest here?

Denis O'Brien owns one of the private hospitals. Don't know about how the vaccine was rolled out in his one, but in others senior non-medical staff have been vaccinated. Nothing wrong in itself, everyone/most ought to get vaccinated, except we are told about shortages for medical staff in the country at the moment when we have a critical situation.

As an accountant and auditor I fill out a form on audit jobs saying that I am not personally involved (employee or financial interest) and have not been involved for a period of 3 years with the client.

She was ceo of digicell foundation in 2012. 9 years ago now.

    Its reaching.

So what's the worry here? The former chief executive of DoB's Haitian telecom company who left in 2012 will use her position of influence in a PR role to change the order of vaccine rollout in a hospital owned by DoB since 2014 which has or nearly has completed its rollout?

No, that she will Spin the story of the rollout to suit the Private Hospitals or be economical with the Truth.

What possessed the Gov to treat others before frontline workers?

    It's not really a policy.

Just because a few borderline admin hospital workers got it first doesn't mean the government are possessed by anything.

Within private institutions the government wouldn't really have a say as to which individuals get priority as that is up to the individual facilities themselves once they get their consignments.

As regards the private nursing homes, I'm not up to speed on how many staff overall have been vaccinated, or for that matter agency nurses in general.

One hospital where frontline staff directly dealing with Covid cases are getting frustrated about waiting for vaccine allocation:

    https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/frontline-hospital-staff-plead-for-covid-19-vaccines-in-social-media-video-1065108.html
A group of doctors and nurses at Nenagh Hospital have called on the Government to sanction the roll-out of vaccines for the hospital’s frontline staff, who have been treating Covid-19 patients since last March.

Staff at the Co Tipperary hospital said they were “infuriated” that they had not yet received the vaccine while their colleagues within the UL Hospitals Group had, at University Hospital Limerick, Ennis Hospital and University Limerick Maternity Hospital.

Before the start of her shift “nursing Covid patients” this morning, clinical nurse manager Louise Morgan Walsh, along with several colleagues, appeared in a video pleading with the Government to release vaccines for staff at the hospital.

The unprecedented recording by HSE staff was posted on Ms Morgan Walsh’s Facebook account.
In the video message to the Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, Ms Morgan Walsh says she wants “to know why aren’t we being vaccinated, why are we being left out”.

The frontline worker said she was “exasperated” because staff had yet to be told when they would receive vaccines, let alone receive the potentially life-saving jab.

“We are so angry, we are scared, we are afraid, we can see our co-workers going down with Covid and becoming very ill,” she said.

“How come we in Nenagh Hospital are being left out, when we can see private hospitals being vaccinated where there are no Covid patients, that’s a question I want to ask the Minister (for Health),” Ms Morgan Walsh added.

Another female staff member who appeared in the video said: “I’m very infuriated that we have not even got a date for a vaccine here in Nenagh hospital. Everybody has family members, whether it be elderly parents, elderly grandparents, children, and we are so infuriated that it’s being picked who is getting this vaccine.”

A male doctor also addressed the camera, saying that “none of the staff here have been vaccinated so far and we have a lot of numbers of Covid patients that we are dealing with every day”.

“I request the government to take immediate steps to provide vaccines for us,” he continued.

A second male doctor who said he has been deployed to the “Covid ward” at Nenagh, added: “I’m being deployed with the Covid patients and I did not get my vaccine yet, the staff who are not frontline are getting it, why aren’t we?”

Another male staff member says: “We have been looking after Covid patients since March, and we should be the ones who receive the vaccine first, not the other staff working in the other sectors, it is really frustrating, and we are really under pressure, so I think we deserve to get vaccinated”.

UL Hospitals Group has been asked for comment.

In response to earlier queries, it said that 574 staff across the mid-west hospital group were not available for work due to Covid-19.

Up to 2,500 staff across the hospital group have received a first dose of the Pfizer/ BioNTech vaccine.

However, group staff at Nenagh Hospital; St Johns Hospital, Limerick; and Croom Orthopaedic Hospital have not yet been told when they will be vaccinated.

Beacon Hospital staff (mostly) vaccinated. View by some might be taken that this is BS and they need the vaccination anyway, or by others that better measures should have been taken to ensure staff currently dealing directly with Covid should have already got it. All depends, I suppose, on the timescale, or, if the latter are waiting significantly longer.

    https://www.irishpost.com/news/outrage-as-staff-at-private-hospital-that-refused-to-sign-hse-deal-receive-covid-vaccines-ahead-of-public-healthcare-workers-201538
STAFF MEMBERS at a private hospital in Ireland have been controversially vaccinated against Covid-19 ahead of staff at public hospitals.

This is despite the fact this private hospital did not sign the HSE bed-capacity deal earlier this month.

The news has been met with fury from many who believe that public front-line healthcare workers should be prioritised.

Staff in the Denis O'Brien-owned Beacon Hospital were vaccinated this week as the facility is to be used as a mass vaccination centre.

Beacon Hospital is a private facility in Dublin which did not sign the deal with 16 other private hospitals, agreeing to permit the HSE to use up to 30% of bed capacity, as public hospitals across the country come under increased strain.

HSE chief executive Paul Reid expressed "concern" about the plan as the Beacon refused to sign up to the Government’s private hospital deal.

"It is, to be frank, at odds with the fact that we don't have an agreement currently with the Beacon Hospital, a signed agreement in relation to the surge safety net agreement. That is a concern of mine," Mr Reid said.

According to the Irish Independent, there is understood to be significant anger among private hospitals that did sign a bed-capacity deal over the Government's decision to designate the Beacon as a mass vaccination centre.

"The other private hospitals thought they were doing the right thing by signing the deal but now they are furious to see Beacon staff get the vaccination ahead of their healthcare workers," a source said.

Btw, I've skin in the game here, being a fairly regular attender of said hospital, so from a personal "selfish" point of view I'm relieved to hear staff are vaccinated.

If it means that people’s outpatient appointments and operations can go ahead I don’t see an issue

Well this is very true for me. But it's not all about me at the moment.

Beacon is a mass vaccination centre (well the hotel they own next to it). Obviously those healthcare workers need to be vaccinated.

The public/private thing is a bit moot.

We have a deal with the private hospitals to use their capacity for one but a healthcare worker is a healthcare worker. We can't worry about whether they are public or private.

Not at all sure who made the decision to vaccinate staff at a private hospital but its a decision that certainly has a whiff about it. But added to this, Meehole Martin could then sign off on Nenagh hospital staff getting vaccinations after they rightly complained. My point being is it appropriate any Politician are involved in anyway regarding these decisions, it seems wrong to me. These decisions should be be clinical decisions accepting of course the private hospital decision was questionable.

Just at the moment, though, it is only *some* of the public health workers who are directly dealing with active Covid cases. Pretty soon, this will be a nine issue, it's just too topic at this minute in the rollout.

I guess that my point and concern, I was quite surprised Meehole came out and made such an undertaking not withstanding every public hospital should be high priority, its politicians knee jerk reactions that cause further uncertainty.

Do you want private doctors and nurses not to be vaccinated when they treat private patients?

Do you also not went then vaccinated when they treat public patients under the deal we have to utilise private hospital capacity?

What makes you think the healthcare worker like in the priority list would refer to public healthcare workers only?

A decent number of Nursing Homes are private, did you object to those staff getting vaccinated?

Trying to get to the nub of your issue here.

Private hospitals will not knowingly treat Covid patients, though of course some have inevitably filtered through the screening. Yes everybody needs to be vaccinated ASAP, whether private, public etc, and vulnerable elderly residents in all nursing homes should definitely be very close to the top. As vaccines are in very short this minute supply the very first ones need to given in the places were Covid is most actively circulating. But this story will (hopefully) probably blow over in a week or two, just where we are at.

That's not at all what I said or suggested, my point is how a private institution (not at time even part of new deal) leap frogged public hospitals, re nursing homes, an entirely seperate issue, they ALL take care of the most vulnerable. All health workers of course need to be prioritised but I don't think it unreasonable that hospitals actually dealing with Covid patients come first. Furthermore, I equally don't believe it appropriate any Politician including Taoiseach should be able to prioritise any location, this should be a CLINICAL decision.

Frontline workers are not their priority though. If they were they would have ensured that they got vaccinated first.

Nearly 70,000 front lines workers, up to Thursday, have been vaccinated and probably a good few more now. That sector I believe is about 100K and should be done soon enough.

So much of this narrative is fed by the media need to trawl up bad news and outrage. They won't run stories on happy vaccinated HCWs but will broadcast the disgruntled who may have been messed around or more likely have uninformed expectations about how the plan is being run.

Over this weekend they are doing a trial run in 3 MVCs(mass vaccination centres) with 1,800 Moderna shots for those in the GP sector.
