OMG, I knew Belgium was in rag order, but not the extent of it  Took a break from Covid news for a little while.

Any links to read about this. But I'll google anyway.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/oct/30/global-covid-report-belgium-facing-new-lockdown-as-germany-takes-in-patients

Sending patients to Germany as they have run out of beds

    1391 cases per 100k population
They had 743 people admitted to hospital in one day during the week

That would be like 370 people being admitted to hospital in one day here

and equivalent of over 500 in ICU here, rising by 20+ daily

    44 in ICU.

Looking forward to the corresponding drop in this number due to the oft mentioned "lag", as our capacity is very limited.

Prof Devi Sridhar in UK was on radio with several CEOs yesterday and their message was clear -> it's the virus impacting consumer behaviour & their businesses, not just restrictions. No matter what level restrictions are at, even very low, people are being cautious and this is directly impacting business. Already clear that controlling the virus with a clear strategy is best route to economic recovery.

No venom here. Just logic and data. Cases fell steadily last week too.

Wonder how the Carl Henaghan fanboys here feel about this. The professor said it was all over back in August.

It’s not over for any country yet, although hopefully the way it’s managed can be improved.

But but but following a science based evidential approach there was no evidence it wasn't over in August. Or somesuch evasive gibberish.

Unless my tea has been spiked, as I don't drink alcohol.

Baiting? Nah, just harmless sneering at the self-appointed intellectuals around here. The folly of youth.

Not you of course, my friend.

Be interesting to see if the incidence rate in school aged children will increase or decrease as a proportion of cases.

I'd be interested in the college age population. Maynooth LEA was doing very well, but then in the last two weeks we've had 220 cases, giving us a rate of 740 per 100k. Given the amount of booze I see twenty somethings buying every night on my way home I reckon maybe students socialising are the reason for the uptick.

That's what happens when you let the crackpots dictate policy. Everybody believed cafe culture was more important than the health care system.

    False economy.

The centre for evidence based medicine appears to have been hijacked by heneghans agenda. Ben Goldacre, one of the best communicator on evidence based science has been conspicuously silent, obviously not going along with the agenda been driven by the head of the centre, but not coming out and directly contradicting his bosses folly

I suppose it's good to have different voices, to challenge consensus. But it is Heneghan's failure to admit he has been completely wrong that is, frankly, disturbing.

Looking at the way this is erupting across Europe, perhaps we are fortunate that level 5 restrictions were applied. I genuinely thought they were over the top at the stage they were applied, as we really had not given Level 3 any chance to have an impact

I suspect though that once again we have either been very clever or very fortunate to react the way we did when we did

Numbers were dropping anyway and as you know there is a two week odd delay till any measures show in the numbers, what is the point of this daily discussion when you know the answer?

I think for once our poor health service may have saved us, they've implemented tougher restrictions here on account of it being under pressure and missed the surge that happened in the rest of Europe. Ironically being the worst at something has made us the best at something else.
