Obvious weakness in a hyper capitalist system, so many moving parts(apparently even middle men are selling and profiting from govt imported masks and gear) wheras in a more socialist system its all hands on deck in this such crisis

Stalin, now that's a man who knew how to get all hands on deck

That said, Trump's press conferences are awful stuff. I can't imagine that people watching take much confidence from them that the president has a good handle on what's going on. I don't think people would be reassured at all by watching them. That's an opportunity missed.

True. Two to three hours of TV time a night alone is probably too much power and influence for him! Number one on Facebook too.

Has there been any more about the small personal stake he has in the company that is making the malaria drug he's telling people to use?

I don't understand, he is blaming WHO again. An organisation with a measly 5bn to cover the entire globe. They warned us in January and Trump did nothing, played down the whole thing, blocked flights from China then which was never going to be effective. The who aren't a police force whose purpose is the prosecute China for bad behavior. They monitor and raise alarm, provide advise and limited resources to non first world medical systems. 5bn is not enough if anything he should propose raising their funding to make them more effective. We have a fat oaf blaming the nerd in the class because he didn't help him cheat on his spelling test. The sychophancy around the white house is at an all time high, the state of them all at press conferences contractually obliged to lavish the president with praise before they are ritualistically fired. And his daughter, in what world can you hire family even in a corporation these days without being excluded from the hiring process due to vested interest. How has this happened, he is like a pre reformation Pope.

Yeah whatever. The drug is not making anyone money,, its well out of patent and can be bought for pennies in a lot of places around the world.. Honestly, I don't give a **** about trump or what he has to say. Most people dont. My governor is doing a good job and that's what matters

No need to be a grumpy ****. Its a discussion forum.

I think people are clutching at straws with that one. I know Trump has a reputation as being incredibly scabby but I doubt even he would be driven purely by the mickey mouse money any stock increase would give him from this.

Seemingly Novartis paid his lawyer over a million for "influence". I'd find that a more credible angle if there is corruption involved.

Ihme model now showing US to peak in four days with 60,000 deaths by August. Hopefully with more data they finally have a better understanding of what is going on now considering far out they have been up to now. Looking unlikely the situation in NY will happen in other areas.

Saw a quick snippet of the surgeon general doing a demo of making a home made mask.

Did he pretty much just hold up a big ad for a drug (said "got naloxone" on it) by using a piece of material to make the mask? Or did I pick it up wrong?

It was an "old tshirt" apparently. But yeah, it's the drug that saves people from opioid overdoses

    - know more ppl who don't usually like Trump which are agreeing with him on this one: a serious review of WHO activity is needed

Just trying to work out what kind of power he has - I thought he has no real power so the states could ignore the call to the China flight ban.

He talks of being able to "lockdown/quarantine" states if he wants, what is the deal there? He can or he cannot?

They couldn't have ignored the flight ban. It wasn't a call to ban, it was an actual barring of flights. Same as the restrictions about non Americans or permanent residents entering the country from Europe.

He can do a federal "shelter in place" order or similar if he wants, which would apply to all states but most already have done it themselves anyway. The ones that havent have hardly any cases. Or he could stop travel between states which might happen if things get really bad in certain areas, although there was a massive push back against that when he suggested it for new York and the surrounding areas so can't see it happening unless things are dire. So technically yes he does have the power but so far is leaving it up to individual states which is probably the best thing to do if he wants to get reelected (and the depressing thing is, he probably will be, even after all this)

The talk of a US peak in 4 days is nonsense. The virus is acting like a wave in the US with different regions on different timescales to that of say NY.

The NY issue might be peaking but the rest of the country have a bit to go yet and premature relaxing of restriction might be a huge mistake.

Anyone know what time the presser is on tonight?

Am expecting Trump to go scorched earth on the WHO despite the White House having warnings of what was coming from mid January.

Zinc is anti viral, helps fight viruses. Good advice from Trump.

Netflix question for Trump. Only in America.
Disgraceful question to ask at a press conference on a day where over 1800 Americans have died from the virus, but even worse for Trump to stand there and laugh and joke about it.

Some of the questions thrown his way are daft and hard to take seriously.

Last night a journalist asked about the price of oil as if he was an expert but then said he hadn't a clue what the price was himself. Not even bothered to research his own question.

    My jaw's just dropped too

    Par for the course tbh.

So far this week, at the Corona Task-Force Briefing, he has raved about being #1 on Facebook, he isn't, but he declared he is. He also bragged about how the prediction models are not the type of 'model' he's usually involved with.

He's also been on twitter to brag about the ratings the task force briefings are getting. Declaring they're outdoing The Bachelor (or something like that?).

No matter the fee the ethics of giving out incorrect information that, one way or another, will be of profit to you are very questionable.

Zinc is anti viral, helps fight viruses. Good advice from Trump.

Viruses are all different and viral diseases are complex. There's no clinical evidence zinc works against SARS-CoV-2 specifically or that it gives better outcomes for COVID-19. Even against common colds, where it has been researched well, there's not enough evidence to say it's worthwhile when balanced against the side effects.

Trump does not know even a bit of what he's talking about.

Surely at this stage some journalist must ask one the two Doctors is what Trump is saying about this miracle drug true or false and would they recommend to one of their patients. That question about Tiger Man was shockingly offensive at such a critical stage of the Pandemic

Fauci and Birx are trying to keep their jobs, mostly because they know that if they don't, what little Federal coordination there has been will descend into chaos while the Trump succession crazy train rolls in. So they're not going to be able answer that kind of question unambiguously, and journalists will be hesitant to throw that grenade.

The US may finally have transmission coming under control in the last few days. If they lose focus now, they'll get another hotspot, and the whole horrible cycle starts again. The two of them have an impossibly narrow path to tread, but they have to tread it.
