A teenager and a young child have been injured in a shooting at a halting site in west Dublin.

Not the first time a child has been injured in a shooting in Dublin. It's hard to imagine the kind of person that would do this though.

without stating the obvious, i'd say it was a traveller

I thought it would have been a drive-by but sure they would have heard the getaway horses galloping from way back...

Would this not be considered Friendly Fire?

    Or perhaps a "Cultural Exchange".

RTE modified the article after you posted it.

It wasn't actually a halting site, but an estate with "bays" for "Traveller Accommodation", according to RTE.

But still a pretty good bet that it's Traveller related. In which case they would probably consider a 17 year old to be an adult and so would think nothing of involving them in the fight.

    Presumably stray shotgun spray

Not that hard. Location location location.

It’ll be someone else’s fault anyway.

Really worrying levels of gun crime in this country nowadays. Any child being shot regardless of what community they belong to is an indictment of our society.

Who lives in a halting site?

This was an act by an individual for which they are solely responsible.

It's a cul de sac with four bungalows. All members of the travelling community. Close enough to Connolly Hospital. Hopefully no fatalities.

Right on cue. Society is to blame. Not the person who pointed the gun in the direction of 2 children and pulled the trigger.

Four victims of shootings since the Garda overtime ban a week or two ago. I wonder if it had anything to do with it. I know the ban itself only lasted five days but a lot of stuff, and people, could have been prepared and moved around in that time.

Actually it's a group of houses with no bays for caravans.

They have their own society, they want to disengage from ours.

And here we have the government to blame for an overtime ban on cops....

They are almost 100% dependent on “our” society for funding their society’s lifestyle.

Climb down a minute chief, my point is that the levels of apathy in relation to gun crime is worrying. I'm not saying that society is to blame for someone making the decision to point a gun at someone else, I'm not some wishy washy liberal sitting in an ivory tower passing judgment on the great unwashed.

The amount of snowflakes up on arms over a referendum on abortion when children have no roofs over their heads and are being shot at by scumbags is a worrying sign for a society.

Its one small road, 4 houses, few caravans in the back gardens.

Pretty sure that the overtime ban isn't actually in place according to Charlie Flanagan

It was in place from the 28th to the 3rd. Not in place at present.

If only the toddler had a gun he could have defended himself.

The thoughts of a 9 month old being shot make me sick :(
Hopefully both make a full recovery.

It hurts a lot more in this kind of cold. I think.
Like when you smack your toe off something on a cold night. Is horrendous.

Could it have been the kids messing with guns they found?

    According to the Journal
Sources have told TheJournal.ie that a baby suffered injuries to its leg during the shooting. A teenage male was also injured.
It is understood that a man approached the house and fired a shotgun at the young man.

It seems the teenager was the target and the baby was collateral.

One is in his late teens and the other was a 9 month old baby. Definitely not playing around with guns.

Have I got this right - a baby has been shot and some people can't help themselves from having a general pop at travellers?

A baby doesnt seem to have stopped one traveller "having a pop" at another.

    Poor kid. Hope its ok.

Casualty count up to three now. One man arrested.

Absolutely horrific. How anyone could make jokes about an innocent 9 month old baby being shot is beyond me.

Teenager would be uncle of baby, woman shot is mother of baby, but not a Traveller.

Would have been termed a bad area a few years ago but has quietened down. The site is there around 20 odd years now and there's the occasional trouble from it but nothing major really. Rumours were that they were offered money to move when they were building the new houses behind it but refused the offer.

    <snip>

It's fairly quiet. The site itself is a horrible eyesore, rubbish everywhere and a kip compared to similar sites. The residents keep to themselves, you would see them around and so on but I have never had any negative interaction with them. I do feel sorry for the kids though, they look like something from Angela's Ashes, pale, skinny and generally looking neglected. There is a traveller family a few doors down from me who know them well and says they are plagued with alcohol issues. I know the mum of the baby, she seems like a nice enough girl. Hopefully they will all be okay and those responsible caught.

    <snip>

News reports state that the shots were at close range so not a case of firing into a house.
Feuds fester and fester in any community. Loss of “ face” and pressure to even up the score and restore “pride” result in a loss of any kind of remorse or mercy, if any ever existed.
The absolute state of that place this evening on the news with the burning wheelie bin in the background and the weed ridden flower holders.

Nicer, more polite kids you couldn't meet in my opinion, one of them is in school with one of mine and she's very nice.
