Ciara Kelly just had Catriona Perry on. After engaging in some mutual congratulations over their new roles at the start of the the interview Ciara then ends with a comment about "you're flying the flag for female journalism". Is this really necessary?

Are we to assume Kelly now considers herself a journalist (as distinct from a broadcaster) now too?

the interview was "light", to put it mildly.

I could wrong but I think she writes a column for a newspaper.

A puff piece in the Sindo magazine. I wouldn't quite call it journalism.

I wasn't aware of that, but, even if that is the case does she hold a NUJ card? I'd be shocked if so.

For context, Vogue Williams and Amanda Brunker have weekly columns in papers, are they journalists now too?

Many journalists aren't in the NUJ.

I doubt any of those mentioned actually consider themselves journalists (as distinct from 'columnist', 'broadcaster', 'writer' etc...)

If you have a problem with your sky dish they will send out an engineer to repair it. He'll not have spent a day in college nor have any degrees yet he's still an engineer.

That's hardly the same thing now at all is it?

I not taking a stance on it at all. I'm just saying that these job titles are getting broader.

On a different topic though, does anyone on here actually like her?

I miss George for political issues but can't imagine him covering the Kevin Spacey issue at all. Kevin who? Is he a singer? That's before he even gets to the fact that he is gay.

I liked the way Ciara covered the pedophile case last week and Kevin Spacey yesterday. I listen as I drive and I find her voice a little bland for radio. If the topic isn't very interesting I can zone out easily. You could never zone out with George voice

The whole show seemed to revolve around 'gender' and women etc. today, it was hard to listen to and a bit puk inducing. Get over it like.

Yes. I think it's really refreshing to have someone from outside 'the media bubble', which is probably a slightly unfair term, but not a completely incorrect one.

I'm sure most people are aware of the events of last weekend, where Ciara Kelly spoke out on social media about her experiences with an alleged rapist who is a prominent figure in Irish broadcasting.

I don't believe that Ciara Kelly would have published her comments if she had been a 'lifer' within the Irish media which, like all professional industries on this tiny island, is pretty close-knit.

Kathy Sheridan, a journalist with the Irish Times, who just two weeks ago was warning against a backlash against victims of Harvey Weinstein, came out swinging in the Irish Times today against the actions of Ciara Kelly. Sheridan began her article with an all-too-obvious reference to rookie journalists, and ended it with the line "Do No Harm" -- an unmistakeable reference to the Hippocratic Oath.

We are all aware of the extent of denial, and defensiveness, that arose within the Roman Catholic Church when its sexual abuse scandals first gained real credibility, only 20 years ago. I think other professions, such as those in media, are now on a similar journey. And we need voices like Ciara Kelly, a relative newcomer, but a particularly strong-minded (and I think, courageous) broadcaster, to speak some home truths.

So yeah, I think this is perfect timing to welcome someone like Ciara Kelly to mainstream broadcasting in this country.

I've said this before, but only because the same bizarre complaint has been made many times -- I genuinely am at a loss to understand the public concern for a GP practice in Bray, which presumably is already well staffed by medical professionals.

Nobody on this Forum has questioned the competence of Will Leahy to fulfill his duties as a solicitor, whilst working with RTE Radio 1 as a presenter, nor the likes of Bobby Kerr, a company director and broadcaster on Newstalk.

I daresay many people who use this forum have more than one single professional role, and are able to manage quite fine.

The apparent issue with Ciara Kelly's Twitter handle is yet a further 'problem' that my brain is obviously incapable of understanding. I can only assume there is something very significant here that I just don't see. I cannot find a rational explanation for it.

to be fair, i think most posters thought bobby kerr was shyte when he started. the first few down to business shows that he did were awful radio. he has grown into it, just about, but there are still better presenters than him there for it, such as Ian Guider. you only really notice how bad a presenter is when they go on holidays.
I do wish he would concentrate more on the business, and pass on the VAT reduction that he kept.

That's fair enough, but it's not Kerr's broadcasting style I'm referring to, it's his ability to do his job at Insomnia.

That's a matter for him alone. It shouldn't concern us, nor should Ciara Kelly's GP Practice concern us.

George interviewed Kevin Spacey a few years back, l think it was back when House of Cards first season was aired, l do recall him saying he was a big fan of the series but didn't like Spacey, apparently he was quite difficult to interview.
I don't think u could ever accuse George of avoiding a topic.

George has to go through the pretendy I'm so old I don't know who he is bit first. It's part of his routine.

I dunno Sleeper. I refer you to Exhibit # 5,473, George Hook once asking his audience what a "gowl" is...

I've not listened to a lot of the show so far. Seems OK and although I'd not be a massive fan of some of Kelly's output on the whole I think she'll do a good job there.

But this idea of getting Joe punter to call in for a chat is tough to listen to. If I wanted ill-informed opinions I'll head down the local and find the pub bore.
Others have said Joe Duffy, all I can think of is Adrian Kennedy .....

I like Ciara Kelly to a point

if she would stop all the feminism and medial rubbish she goes on about then she could have a worth while programme worth listening to. she needs a broad and varied variety of topics to talk about not just the same usual rubbish

I agree with previous posters that Lunchtime is making a mistake by trying to blend current-affairs with 'Liveline', but I'd slightly disagree with you on this on, pen_turner. Perhaps there is an opening for a medical call-in slot, which happens on other radio stations (e.g. The Clive Bull Show, on LBC).

That would be something novel, that doesn't already feature on Irish radio. I know George Hook used to do a variation on this with Ciara Kelly, but it was rushed and didn't feature callers.

Otherwise, I agree with you, the regular medical slant to the show doesn't really work, although it's hard to fault Ciara Kelly for playing to her strengths in her new role. But if she left it to a medical call-in slot once or twice a week, featuring rotating medical specialists, for example, it might be more interesting.

I feel this is where Newstalk is going wrong. By lunchtime we want factual news. Hook was alice in wonderland. Ciara Kelly I do like but I see her show as a Gerry Ryan substitute. I do like her but maybe not at lunch time?

I've heard the show a few times and my problem with Ciara Kelly is that she seems incapable of interviewing guests without putting her own, (perfectly PC), opinions into the mix. She always answers her own questions before letting the guest get a word in.
George was guilty of the same thing except his opinions were not always PC.
I think that Sean O'Rourke is the only current affairs broadcaster on Irish radio who seems to know how to ask questions without lacing them with his own opinions. Pat Kenny used to be good before he moved to Newstalk, but he has lost his impartiality when he 'moved the dial'.

Listened to the show today and there was a segment about a family living in a b+b for 2 years. While their situation was disturbing she never asked if the family were doing anything themselves to better their situation, instead it was another "we want a forever home" segment.

In fairness to Ciara I've never heard any interviewer ask a question like that. Ever. It would be pretty rude. These are questions that the social welfare asks. If they don't satisfy the social welfare or the housing officer then they will drop down the bottom of the housing queue

Maybe they should be asking those questions, They ve been on the housing list years according to the interview and seem to think the state owes them a home. At least if they are working but still cant afford something they would have my sympathy.

They are trying to do an Erica Fleming on it.
people now "go homeless " to get pushed up the housing list
