My suspicious mind tells me the guys in the wet suits were looking to retrieve something a lot more valuable than golf balls.

    Money, drugs or guns.

The guys out with a gun, at night, on a golf course, possibly looking for the same "merchandise".

What did he think was coming out of the water/hedge?

    A seal?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,951 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

Depends on which kind of seal he was thinking about being in there . A seal or a USN SEAL.

Did the "hunters" have one?OTOH it might also have prevented such a shooting too. It's irrespective, even if they had a state-of-the-art Ukrainian spotter drone up with them. It was an unidentified target and the more you read of it the more suss this whole story becomes. From both sides. Lads out in the night looking in a water trap for golf balls, another group "hunting" on a golf course?

I thought it odd lads out in wetsuits after balls but thought the hunters were out after rabbits. I know a lad with permission to shoot rabbits at a driving range. I wonder were the lads in wetsuits known to the Gardaí.

There's decent money in lake balls. There's a retired guy in Cork that has the "rights" for search on a couple of golf courses, but he is restricted to non-playing hours, so very early morning or very late evening. He makes a decent sideline in it and only searches bushes.

Decent ProV will get you €1.50- €2, and even the average golf ball will get you €1. You could easily collect 200+ balls in a couple of hours in a lake

Here's a site selling lake balls sourced in Irish lakes https://colegolf.ie/products/golfballs/

Rabbits are a scourge in many clubs at present. They burrow holes which an unsuspecting golfer can easily trip on, hence some clubs will get some local hunters in to cull the rabbit population along with foxes if they also pose a problem.

So for golfers, there is nothing unusual about the story except the guy doing the hunting should have been a lot more aware that people other than golfers (walkers can frequent golf clubs) can be on a golf course late evening / early morning

Out of curiosity with all the new legislation on firearms does anyone know what the murder rate by guns vs knives is in Ireland?

Also do they differentiate between day and night and pistol and rifle?

I work with a member of the golf club in question. None of the parties involved had permission to be on the grounds.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,641 ✭✭✭✭josip

I still wouldn't be surprised if the injured party doesn't try to claim from the club's public liability insurance. How is the injured party?

I doubt it. Would be very off during drugs or money to end up in a lake. Even if that was the case, I doubt they’d go to the paper or cops.

Most obvious explanation, lads were taking golf balls without permission. Other lads were shooting somewhere they shouldn’t have been.

Guy shooting at an unknown target, with unknown backstop, is an idiot. It could go very badly for him.

Anyone see the Nashville school shooters manifesto go up online the other day?

    https://www.louderwithcrowder.com/nashville-shooters-manifesto

I know there is currently a lawsuit in progress to prevent the release of the manifesto, but this does seem to be legit based on the chief of police's confirmation.

A fake was previously also leaked, but that appears to be the legit one.

Read a few screenshots, same old nonsense. Ramblings of a crazy person. Reactions to it also not surprising. Cherry picking parts to feign outrage at. And ignoring the glaringly obvious if it doesn’t suit them.

Agree, the ravings of a complete lunatic.

I am somewhat surprised though at how long it's taken to be leaked, since the shooting happened in March after all and numerous groups & news orgs have requested access to it.

Don’t get me started on vrt, a tax the eu fines Ireland on every year but we get more than the fine so keep charging it. Where is the free common market the rest of Europe has?

Poland, Portugal and Ireland had an exemption to charge VRT until 08? The other 2 have stopped I think but we never.

    Anyway rant over, apologies.

When it suits our dear leaders in the Dail that is.

We are very A la Carte EU members. If there is "free money " to be got We are flag-waving Europeans. When it comes to the common defence of the EU superstate or having to do EU stuff of a more unpleasant nature. We are suddenly Irish.

Just after putting on RTE radio 1 , there seems to be a debate about deer culling or releasing wolves

    2:00 pm

    Unsensible old talk.

    Wolves won't eat sheep etc.

What do Ursla Van Der Lyen, Nadia Terenzi Italy,Marie Schmidt Lower Saxony,Martino Rainer .Italy, have all in common? They, bar Ushi Van Der Lyen, have been victims of wolf attacks in 2023 In Western Europe.

Ushi lost her pet pony, Dolly to a wolf attack on the family farm in northern Germany in 2022. If they introduce wolves into Ireland "to cull deer" well then all I can say is we have reached peak stupidity here . If we can't control packs of domestic dogs savaging shepherds' livelihoods every year around this time during lambing season. What will it be like when a team of literally, nature's special forces in the form of a Wolf pack descends on someone's flock, or prize horses or cattle? They are WELL capable of taking down a horse or a cow and any human who is unarmed and tries to confront them.

Where will these wolves live in Ireland? We do not have vast forest areas all over Ireland, something like only 5% of the country is forest, not to mind a single wolf pack needs a range of something like Connaught and Munster of acreage to roam and mark as theirs. The last time I looked they had vast forests back in the 16th century around the same time the wolf was made extinct in Ireland.

Trying to foist an apex predator back into a country that is no longer suitable and has changed permanently and dramatically since it was last here, just because of some romantic twaddle of "the noble wolf" being an environmental benefit for a, in reality, slight problem of deer overpopulation in certain hotspots is seriously dangerous idiocy.

Holy ****, this **** is dangerous:

Something that might be raised maybe in a forum or barstool and laughed off is gaining some sort of traction and getting column inches. A "study" claims wolf reintroduction is viable and who done the study, someone with an interest surprise, surprise. I'd love to see the parameters of the 1000 simulations they ran. Probably the same as the ones that recommended the lead ban.

If we can’t introduce a few eagles without them being blown out of the sky, how would wolves not all be killed too?

Eagles arent wont to swoop down from the skies and attack you, unless you are bothering their chicks or nest.
