Why does that "rifle " look like it has been crudely cut and pasted onto the picture, and made look Ar15 ish?

The trouble is when you magnify and zoom the pic the rifle looks like he is carrying a Barret light 50 rifle.Which would be VERY unlikely.

All in all it sounds like the resident "Victor Meldrew" got hold of the reporter and spouted some utter nonsense.

    Verdict.VERY dodgy story.

Where would I buy one of those silencers that make the shot sound like "a puff of air"? Hollywood maybe?

I agree it looks like a Light Fifty/M82. And agree it’s very unlikely that a 50BMG is licensed in the state.

Reading between the the lines. It’s an airsoft. Abd some of the residents are fully aware it’s an airsoft.

    Make carrying “firearm”

    …what appeared to be a rifle…

…let’s not call it anything else until proven otherwise…

It may be that it’s an air rifle, but we don’t know that for certain

I’ll go out on a limb and say Chairman Mills knows full well it’s a sub 1joule airsoft. But wants to play the ignorance card to cause a fuss.

    Planted by who? Lol

If it was a planted fake story they’d have imagined something that was in some illegal or involved shooters.

Its a typical commitee Queen with nothing better to do. Abd a journalist with nothing to write about. No more.

Lots of "gun stuff" appearing in our media at the moment. Do you think PTB & media are not aligned? Do non shooters know what we know and realise the article is BS? Doubt it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,238 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

I think the most obvious explanation is usually the right explanation.

The media will publish whatever gets them the most clicks. A Madman roaming Mullingar is more dramatic that a man-child with a airsoft on his back. Sometimes publishing the dramatic version of the story will hurt shooters and align to other interests, that's not the same as a co-ordinated smear campaign.

IF there was a targeted campaign as you suggest. I highly doubt it would feature in a local Westmeath newsletter, with a circulation of 5000. Nor do I think it would be such a ridiculous article. If it was fabricated, it would most likely actual firearms owner doing something actually illegal. To me it sounds like a hysterical local busy body. Chairman of the residents committee, reported it to the council (lol) - I think we all know exactly this type of person. Again, most obvious explanation.

Seems clear, sensible and reasonable from the judge.

Judge John King said he would consider the appeal against the refusal of the firearm cert on September 15. In the meantime, he directed the applicant to attend at his doctor for urinalysis on May 29 and again within 24 hours of a phone call from gardaí directing him to have a second test.

The judge said he would grant the firearm certificate in September subject to clear urinalysis in respect of those tests and subject to other standard conditions.

Going to be an interesting legal situation in the future if we ever do legalise the weed here in the Republic for medicinal use even. The lad who ran the ORC campaign in Northern Ireland had to give up his FACs as we needed medical Maryjane for pain relief for his spinal condition.

I don’t think it poses any legal issues. Plenty of countries have legalised medical cannabis without issue.

I think it should be legalise. I’d have no issue about utilising it if it was. I have tried CBD oil to treat inflammation post knee surgery. I imagine the stronger stuff can help even more.

If anything legalising it will eliminate the criminal aspect and encourage sensible use.

Infairness Grizz said in combination with having firearms. Not just legalising the green. I would Think it’s the same as drinking and shooting and we all saw in Donegal how that’s not a good combo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,238 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Yeah, I got that was the implication. My answer was with that in mind. Legal medical cannabis use and firearm ownership are not at odds with each other. As is seen in German, Switzerland, Norway, Finland, etc etc etc.

The guy above got into bother as he was caught driving under the influence. That's obviously irresponsible, and would still be irresponsible with a prescription. But 99% of medical cannabis users are able to do so completely responsibly, there's no issue with any body being a medical cannabis user and also owning a car. As long as they don't use both together. Just likes is also perfectly fine to drink alcohol and to own a car/firearm. As long as you don't do both together.

Somebody who does both* together, and gets caught, especially repeatedly. Should probably have to demonstrate they are responsible enough to have their license reinstated.

*that seems to apply for all 4 combinations of activity and substance.

Germany Grass or Geweher ? One or the other.

The USA likewise. It even specifically asks you on the 4773 form when you are buying a firearm. Have you ever used Marijuana or any other narcotics?[Somthing Joe Bidens son Hunter, lied thru his teeth about.]

I thought medical cannabis lacked the good stuff.

Nope aSFIK the THC compound is the pain relieving part of the compound?

Strange decision that you have to choose between guns and marijuana in Germany. Do they have the same rule between guns and alcohol because both marijuana and alcohol both have the potential to alter someone's mind.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,780 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

Germans have odd laws on booze. Beer for example is classed as a foodstuff,[since around 1416] and not an alcoholic beverage.Hence you can actually buy it in a vending machine in your place of work and drink it while operating machinery or equipment. To us Irish that sounds weird and HTAF does anyone not have accidents and be sober during work? Simple really. They have a different sense of personal responsibility and duty to workand workmates than us Irish. You won't find Hans completely rat-assed operating a machine for anyway long as he would be out the door with his P35 before lunchtime. But a H&S inspector or foreman won't bat an eye at an opened bottle of beer beside the same machine and Hans is working away no problem.

Likewise driving DUI is an utter death knell for you if you have any sort of firearms/hunting cert and are caught. Likewise, if you have a pilot's license or a small boatsman's license. In fact any sort of state-granted license. You lose them ALL for the period of your DUI suspension, It's a 3 strike and you are out. In fact, over there these days, fiddling with your taxes, excessive speeding or belonging to an extremist Right or Left political group or liking a slightly off-colour FB post will get you in the same hot water. Yet it is no bother to have a bottle of beer in the gun clubhouse after a shoot and drive home. Different if of course you pour a bottle of Schnapps into yourself and try it and run into a police checkpoint,[as no doubt someone will have phoned the cops before you even make it into your car with your firearms].Which in itself is a very rare occurrence,if they have a checkpoint up, it's for something serious not your tax& insurance and NCT. I've yet to see one for DUI in Germany. They don't have every long weekend the local police reminding Germans about speeding or driving under the influence at the holidays on the MSM. It's just a given that Germans take their responsibilities seriously. So yeah, having a booze problem that's clinically diagnosed you as an alcoholic, your guns are gone.So it's hardly then surprising if you are using or growing your own ganja for medicinal use your guns are gone too...

Wasn’t aware that a medical marijuana permit in the US meant giving up firearms. Assumed it was like alcohol, that's how it is in other places. But the German angle makes sense too. If somebody is saying they need medical marijuana to treat an issues, that is medicine to that and they need it all the time.

I think I was thinking more of places there marijuana is decriminalised and legal to use recreationally. That case, it should be treated more like recreational alcohol - in that social/recreational drinking is not an issue but alcohol dependency could see you loose a firearms license (this is the case in Ireland as well).

Mods feel free to move this if not suitable. I don’t know how many people here still use a wax coat, but Barbour in Kildare village have a good supply of wax for re proofing at the moment, only reason I am posting it is any time I have been in there in the last few years it wasn’t available.

How convenient, that following a governmental report stating that thermal/NV can not differentiate between a bee and a deer, that something like this happens, ? hmm, one wonders!

    Just reading this https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2023/0613/1388935-dublin-investigation/

Would there be any mitigating circumstances at all on the part of the shooter, or is he/she a complete idiot and should never be allowed hold a firearm again?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,750 ✭✭✭✭BattleCorp

Absolutely no mitigating circumstances. I don't think complete idiot covers it to be honest.

Shooters need to see clearly what they are shooting at and if there's a safe backstop before they even think of going near the trigger.

Sh1t like that throws a bad light on all of us and I'd fully expect that person to never be allowed to hold a firearm again.

That's exactly what I thought when this came out yesterday. There's more to this than meets the eye. Who were these people in wetsuits supposedly retrieving golf balls after dusk? Who were these 'hunters'? Are they members of any particular club or are they 'family'? We have a few of the latter out round here from time to time after dark with their whippets.
