There's two things I hate in life,
People who are intolerant of other cultures, and the Dutch!!!

    You go man.

We'll call you Joseph Go Balls!

Are her views based on her personal experience or any kind of reality?

No. Its nothing like that. There's No social experiment. It's an open and shut case of disliking any and every person from one particular part of the world, who are usually pretty identifiable from race & other attributes.

Nobody I've spoken to IRL denies that she's saying racist things. They just differ on whether or not racism is a reason to end things, or at least not so soon.

Surely relationships are all about compatibility? People tend to hang out with like minded people, and if you aren't and she isn't, break-up no matter how hot she is.

I think you know what you should do ......... if you, like myself, can't stand ignorant racist people then the relationship is doomed anyway so why drag it out? Just cut loose and move on ........... unless it's those Muslimy-looking people that she dislikes, can't stand that lot myself!

That's what I was thinking. She could have a few acres with road frontage.

Sounds like nationalism more than racism. You won't hear my Greek parent (or ex Greek Air force uncle) say a single nice thing about a Turk, (I suspect Armenians are the same way), Koreans have...issues.. with Japanese simply because they are Japanese, plenty of folks from Ireland have had issues with the English, not many Arabs will say good things about Israelis...
These aren't racist opinions, they are based on national history. Racism is an opinion of superiority or better worth than someone because of skin color or ethnicity. Nationalism doesn't care about race, but definitely cares about the society that they come from.

    Xenophobic bigotry maybe

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

A private backyard for cross burning so as not to annoy the neighbours?

    Deal.

If she doesn't like one nationality for whatever reason then it is a gross exaggeration to call her racist. That world is the most inappropriately used word in the English language imo.

The other day on TV news I was watching a man and a woman debating immigration. The man interrupted the woman so she accused him of being sexist for interrupting here. "x-ist" words seem to be used all over the place now without any consideration for what the word actually means.

It's not just about racism. If someone is so overtly racist then you would have to question their empathy & basic decency. She could be a stunning nymphomaniac but I would still prefer a compassionate, caring girl.

In the absence of the relevant details which you won't supply throughout this thread, the only advice I can give you is to go with what your gut is telling you.

I am thinking the op won't say that or anything more.

To be honest all sounds a little too vague. She could be mildly racist or full blown. Op won't give examples so what's the point I guess :p

Ye sound like lovely people altogether.

I honestly don't get this pig ignorance that some people have. You need to take people as they come and judge every individual as you meet them. If someone you meet is an arsehole then usually it's because that person is an arsehole, not down to the fact they're Jamaican or Nigerian or Irish or Dutch or whatever the f*ck they may be. Obviously there can be cultural clash at times, but taking a "I hate the X" mentality is always wrong and it's always stupid.

People are multi-faceted and everyone has faults, but grinding ignorant racism like the above is a bit hard to see past for me anyway.

I think you need to ask yourself one really, really important question: how is her so-called racism going to affect you and affect the relationship?

Is she liable to start f*cking Fruit Pastilles at some turban-wearing man three rows ahead of you's in the cinema? Is she likely to cause a scene if a non-white man or woman serves you in a restaurant and gets the order wrong? Is she going to drag you along to White Power marches and start buying you jeans with elasticated crotches?

If it's no to all, which I'm pretty sure it is because to me there's a difference between saying racist stuff and actually acting racist, then don't dump her. It's madness to overlook her qualities - beauty, intelligence, funny and interesting - and focus on one of her perceived flaws. I say perceived because until you reveal the severity of her remarks, or disclose whether they're said to the people or merely said about them, then it's hard to judge them.

She's not racist. If her prejudice is for a specific nationality, that's just a bit of zenophobia, and she may have her reasons.

What nationality are we talking about here?

If she's Israeli, and hates Palestinians, Maybe her prejudice is somewhat justified?

Long story short, I've started seeing a girl who has recently come out with some pretty racist remarks.

She's a well educated, otherwise intelligent, fun and interesting person. Strangely for a racist, she's fairly well travelled and has lots of interesting opinions. But she is openly racist towards one particular foreign nationality.

Her attitude stinks, and I've tried talking to her but she is unapologetic.

What would you guys do? Is this a deal breaker for most people? It's a deal breaker for me in terms of any kind of on going relationships but most of my male friends think it's an overreaction.

I'm not going to post details of her specific bigotry because would turn into an ugly debate on that nationality and probably a defence of her opinion.

I'm just curious as to whether a racist attitude would cause AHers to break up with someone

    What's her reasoning? Personal experience?

My wife has an, in my opinion, irrational fear/dislike of ........... well it doesn't matter what it is she dislikes, it's irrelevant ......... the question is, should I divorce her?
