I used to go to work on Sunday's still drunk. Would start to sober up some part of the afternoon. Many the facial I have with the shakes, many the facial I had to leave to vomit. my face would be numb from the amount of vodka I'd have drank and the tell tale burn would be still at the back of my throat, so I'm sure there was a bang off me because I Used to be able to feel it coming out of my pores.

    Good times.

Your tolerance will go up as the weeks go on and soon you'll be having a shoulder for breakfast

Hah I knew it , you're a porn star with your facials here and facials there.

Any OP , excellent choice for thread , if I may take you back a couple years when American soldiers returned from Vietnam a lot were placed in jobs with the US mail service , after a while when they sobered up and realised they didn't like anyone they tend to start shooting ... their managers , colleagues, customers everyone really , eventually coining the term to " go postal " i.e. start killing people .

So if a little vodka helps you through the day rather than kill a few arseholes , I'm with you.

Have a look at coursera and edx and see if anything interests you. Studying a new skill and working towards a different career will make the grind easier and give you motivation to drink less.

It was a positive side effect of me getting into web dev in the evenings.

Wrong. None of them hate their job. They are all dying to be voted back in if you notice.

So, like many of you I hate my job. The work is tedious, my co-workers make the same inane conversation day in day out, and frankly I'm sick of it. Unfortunately quiting is just not an option right now.

Recently however, I've come into work still drunk from the night before and found those couple of hours before I sobered up to fly by. I'm now thinking of discreetly drinking throughout the day, just enough to get nicely buzzed, to make the day go quicker, and ultimately to make work bearable. Since I already drink most nights it's not as if I can't afford it. Also, to maintain health I'll no longer drink on the weekend.

My plan is to mix vodka (doesn't smell) with a bottle of fruit juice and just sip on it all day. I'm thinking a naggin a day but I'll probably have the spend the first week or two adjusting the dose. I don't have to drive or use machinery by the way.

Anyway doing/did this? And what are the possible pros and cons of this plan?

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like you should go (back) to college.

Drinking and work is only a good idea if you're trying to climb you're way to the top

We all know Lexie's favourite sex act from her autocorrect. And don't tell me you're male ... I've made my choice.

EDIT : maybe Lexie is a porn star ?

I think you will prove to be very successful in your job. Look at all the successful guys in Mad Men they had swigs of the hard stuff at every opportunity.... before you know it youll have a secretary but youll need to start saving for the sideboard to hold the bottles. This could start a new 50s trend!!

we have free beer at work too, we have a fridge in each kitchen full of it. Office job, Dublin city centre.

I hardly ever see anyone having any though usually just on Friday evenings or pre-work nights out. There was one lad who used to sneak a beer into his coffee cup but he didn't last long.

A few years ago I was assigned to a particularly crap project. High visibility, sh!t existing code-base and unrealistic deadline (ha! what's new I hear you say but this was even moreso). I was well pissed off with it and all of a sudden to deal with the dread of it, I started having a proper smoke or two (mainly 2.5 tbh) before heading in in the morning. I swear there was a month and a half at least where I went in every single day very stoned. I took the weekends "off" from the weed to convince myself it was balanced out.

Pros: Project was delivered well on-time, got lot of praise and as a result got a sweet bonus and promotion!
Cons: Put on a bit of weight due to eating absolute crap at lunch time. Worried about me being able to be a highly functioning addict.

Good luck with your plan OP!

There is little or no smell off vodka when mixed.

Anything to liven up the day.

Just quit the fcuking job mate. If you start boozing on the job then you'll develop a dependency.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,570 ✭✭✭HensVassal

Lads I'll be sipping on diluted vodka, not slamming shots so I'm not going to be wasted in work. I'll out a lot of thought into this. If there was a chance of me injuring someone I obviously won't do it.

I'm interested to know if anyone currently does this or has done it in the past

Did it when I had a summer job as a barman in a country club in the States during college. Was half sozzled most nights on the job for the entire summer. When I got an office job I tried to go back to work after 2 or 3 friday afternoon pints and couldn't stay awake. So it depends on the work. If you don't have to focus, concentrate or use your brain then it's doable. If you have to sit at a desk and read sh1t it's nigh on impossible...at least for me.

    So OP,

Are you at work now and have you started on the sauce?

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,812 ✭✭✭✭sbsquarepants

I feel your pain OP, but I'd have to advise against it. I've been in your shoes and whereas I steered clear of the auld demon drink because everyone can smell it no matter what you think, many years back I did have a tendency to pass the time with a variety of class a's. I wasn't alone btw, it was fairly endemic where I was.
The days went fast and there was the added benefit of a few work time sexual encounters that I'm sure I wouldn't have pursued in a more sober frame of mind, but it doesn't do a whole lot for your productivity, or your comprehension of what's going on. I made some very stupid, expensive mistakes.
Somehow I managed to get by for a couple of years without anyone in authority noticing (well at least without them commenting or actually doing anything about it) and eventually grew up and copped myself on. I now live a completely drug free life, full of long tedious workdays without even the brief reprieve of sexual deviance (at least until I get home!)- but sure hey, I'm finally getting some work done - so swings and roundabouts:mad:

Actually - Fúck it OP. Let loose, you're only young once.

My guess is that the OP works in a large open plan office, probably in the financial services industry. Insurance?

I'm guessing he's a driver on the Luas and his demand for a 53% pay rise is directly related to his increase in Vodka consumption and low skilled job demands

The OP neatly explains the left view of addiction....addictions is a reflection of poor well-being in the Op case they hate their job, so they consume alcohol because they can't be full present or do not want to be fully present in their everyday life alcohol/drugs numbs the existential pain of existence.

The right explication... its a moral failing on the part of the alcoholic/addict.

Realistic explanation its probably a mixture of the above.

In other words it a mixture of the environment and the personal.

Are you covered by insurance in work while drunk?

I suffer from Anxiety especially around jobs and job interview, I have considered taking a drink to help going into the interview or even maybe the first day of a job but thankfully I never did it because I know drink would never solve anything and the repercussions of someone finding out you have drink on you is a lot worse than me coming across as nervous or incapable in a job interview, I just get through it best I can.
