What sort of rubbish is that? The vast majority of of parents who drop off kids in a car are doing it on their way to work. It’s the ones who don’t work who have time for killing walking to and from a school.

And yet, the Census data referenced above shows that 'the vast majority' of journeys are short and easily walked or cycled - but I guess you want to keep ignoring that.

Well it’s been pretty much the same setup at the school for the last 25 years or so since it was built and there hasn’t been so much as a scratch on a child. You will see a similar setup in most country schools so you are frankly sprouting absolute biased nonsense.

Completely different scenario when actually going outside working.

'Not so much as a scratch on a child' eh?

But hey, let's keep calling them 'accidents' so no-one has to feel bad about anything and change their practices.

Interesting - so you're well capable of protecting yourself from rain when 'going outside working', but the concept of having to protect yourself from rain when going outside to work would be an absolutely outrageous imposition on your human rights.

It's been pointed out numerous times that it actually rains very little at school drop off and collection times. Since the kids went back to school it's been remarkably dry across the country with only a few days of rain or what you could say were wet days. Regardless the traffic at schools if anything got worse. These parents are doing their children no favours by driving then to the front door of the school.
They'd drive them to the classroom door if they were let.

Today was worse than usual with the mini marathon on. Alfred Street was rammed with illegally parked cars but as there is no enforcement, people feel entitled to park wherever that want.

      Doh, of course it's tomorrow.

They were there today at both ends of Patrick st seemed to leave cars down from the bridge end but all cars from other side sent up coal quay

4 links, 2 to the same incident and none in school car parks. You are doing good job proving me right so thanks for that.

You really don't get the idea of learning from past history, do you?

Sure, not to worry, once you don't get your t-shirt a little damp, that's the important thing.

This one was the school car park, btw.

It is a fair point. Bags are rediculously heavy. I don't even remeember my bag being that heavy way back when I was in primary school. Secondary yeah sure but not primary.
And no..iPads are not the answer.

That kind of weight is very manageable on a bike carrier, or a trolley bag with wheels.

We had cubby holes way back in primary school - also as another poster stated, get a set of panniers and you're sorted.

I regularly use trolleys and wheelie bags around Cork City and I've never gotten dog crap on any of them. I suppose people can't walk, generally, in public in case they step in dog crap?

This is just another excuse to change "want to drive kids to school" into "have to drive kids to school".

Ive almost been hit by a car coming out of a car park across the road from school, she just didn't see me, and that I'm a 6 foot tall, 15 stone guy in a bright blue top, luckily I was between my 6 year old and the car, She wouldnt have been seen over the bonnet.
Woman just didn't see us, she'd dropped the kids to school, probably rushing to the preschool...

So? Do we ban all car parks and all road crossings? A school car park is no different to any car park, should we ban shopping centre car parks because kids go shopping with their parents?

How about we stop parking in kid's playgrounds?

No the opposite. How about we have special "family" spaces that are closer to the shops so the little dears are not inconvenienced by having to walk too far.

Car parks aren't great places for kids to be taking their exercise, because of
      1) Fumes
      2) Cars

The location of parent/child spaces does not cause obesity. Car dominated culture that has parents parking in the school playground and thinking that a 4k walk or cycle is outrageous causes obesity.

It is very relevant. The same culture that demanded and got family spaces which are closer to shops so children would have a shorter distance to walk has informed the culture of parents who believe that children shouldn't walk or cycle to school and feel entitled to drive into school yards.

The shorter distance to walk is to reduce exposure to toxic fumes and to dangerous drivers. Do you really feel aggrieved to have to walk the slightly longer distance than parents with kids?

'Children have to be driven everywhere to reduce exposure to toxic fumes and to dangerous drivers"
No. I do not feel aggrieved that I have to walk across the car park because little Johnny needs a special spot next to the shop. Because I think there is nothing wrong with a 30second walk.
But can you not see that it is the exact same mindset with similar justifications that is used for both. Children not being able to walk to school and children not being able to walk across a car park.

You should see curraheen road at school time's,
nightmare yummy mummies all over the gaff abandoning cars,
double parked on paths etc,and lot of them having an ould giggle completely oblivious
      to the mayhem they cause

Shorter distance for adults to be juggling kids, trolleys, shopping and buggys through a busy car park as well.

The walk to school isn't quite as stressful and doesn't involve as much multitasking and distraction.

    22. Registered Users Posts: 308 ✭✭Weltsmertz

These spaces are not really for those that want to bring toddlers grocery shopping. They are so that entitled teenagers and other children who are perfectly capable of walking don't have to walk as far to the shop.
Now maybe you can argue that children shouldn't be exposed to noxious fumes or have to risk their lives by walking through a carpark but these are the same snowflake justifications that are used by parents that insist that children can't be allowed walk to school.
And we end up with a generation of children that are overweight and scared of the big bad world.
It's time we let children be children and stop mollycoddling them in this manner.

I haven’t moved on anywhere you have managed to find one death, one. I think we are all safe in school car parks with them stats. You have more chance of winning the lotto than being killed in a school park...

You can keep linking to the crazy articles with zero credibility all you want but it’s not going to change the fact they are biased nonsense.

Why arent you lobbying for nuclear power if you feel so strongly about emissions because cars are meaningless compared to Electricity production , if you want safe, clean and properly sustainable energy production we need nuclear power and we need it fast!

I'd guess that the surviving families of three year old Ray Cuddihy and teacher Dawn Croke might have a different view on whether school car parks are 'all safe'.

I wouldn't disagree too much with your general thinking on the nuclear issue, but that's a little off topic.

Are you seriously suggesting that car exhaust fumes are not toxic for humans?

Friday evening there was at least 5 cars parked on the pedestrian area on Grand Parade by the library. No enforcement leaves people with a sense of entitlement to park wherever they want.

And it all could be solved with about a dozen bollards.... In fact I firmly believe the access to the car park across the plaza should be closed. Time for the city to take control and not let the traders run the show.

Devil's advocate but the car park operators can argue what's the difference between crossing the pavement into that car park and crossing the pavement into the any other one, Q Park opposite for instance
